You actually make a darn good point. My friend makes fun of me because I change my oil religiously, I prefer to stay out of mud, I cover my Jeep, I never let my Jeep sit with an empty gas tank, and I womp on the accelerator at every light. So far my Jeep has loved me and not kept me stranded because I love it and baby her.
My friend has a '2002 TJ with 100k miles. He is on his third clutch, he has had to replace bearings, and he has had a leaky head gasket. He says he has too much fun to not be hard on it but I am more anal and my stuff tends to last longer.

The manifold crack is a common occurrence with our TJs. Some sooner, some later. Mine occurred 8 years after purchase. The issue is the absent of expansion joints well at least with my 98 Sahara. The dealership quoted me $800 for a new manifold plus labor! I thought I was being robbed!
Thanks to our Jeepin community and a majority of shadetree mechanics, I was able to save and work on the Jeep myself. I know there are people, who would prefer not to order overseas, but I went with the $120 internet special & I am happy with my purchase!!! No cracks to date, and I know Jeepers who chose a Banks or Borla replacement and for the $$$ we spent I believe I am just as well off if not better in my investment.
The replacement process took me a total of six hours to accomplish. I did not even have to take off my fuel rail. If I had to do it again, I think I could cut the time by 50%. The only special tool required was the tool to separate the fuel line from the fuel rail.
All in all, not a difficult weekend project.

Personally I don't think you will find an engine and drive chain that is as strong and long lasting as the Jeep 2.5 and 4.0 provided you take care of it. My 98XJ's engine lasted for over 330,000mi till an injector stuck open and took out #3 cylinder. I have a jasper rebuilt in there now and expect it to last at least that long. I really love not having any car payments and have had none for the last 5 years. What I like about it the most, you can rebuild almost any part of it with simple hand tools. My son sold a 94 YJ to a friend, it had a rusted frame in the back passenger side, he also sold him a rolling replacement frame, they did the swap over in 4 part time days. Unplug it, unbolt the body, 6 friends lift it up and put on some saw horses, roll the frame out, move everything from the old to the new frame, roll it back under, drop and bolt the body up, plug it back in, done.
Note to self, remove hard top and full doors first next time.....and don't fill the dam gas tank up...

thanks brotha, some people get offended, i tend to give my opinion, even if it isn't pleasant. other people appreciate someone that tells it like it is. i'm not always right, but thats what this is about, knowledgeable people, and their opinions.

Point is, you're not out of line at all. I beat the hell out of my YJ and did some stupid shit with it, and look where I am now...
Not Jeep, No license and working a dead end job because of lack of transportation.

i'm not tryin to be mean, cuz i've been hard on my vehicles in the past, till i got sick of fixing them all the time. BUT, in his previous thread, jeep has 160k miles, changed oil between 3,500-5,000 miles. 3500 ok, 5k tooooo long. and noise was worse above 3500 rpm. 5,000 oil change interval, and 4 grand rpm, bad combo for any motor, especially low end power motor. jeep motor isn't much good over 3500 anyway.
but don't get me wrong, i will have a good time in my wrangler, and i will use my vehicles. but you gotta take care of them.
there's a balance, enjoy vehicle, and take care of it. i didn't realize this till i got a little older, and experienced peoples maintenance habits, and breakdowns.
sorry if i'm out of line here. just take it for what it is. opinions are like what?

Time to move on...
Well got the results back from mechanic and the diagnosis is...cracked manifold AND a gaulded #6 piston (of course it's the one in the very back) . Folks i gotta tell ya...I have never thrown so much money at one vehicle before in my life, and I used to own a 1972 Chev. Vega. All that aside, this has been one of the most fun vehicles I've had to drive but I just can't afford the entertainment anymore. Especially with gas prices being what they are. Thanks for the forum everybody, it has been a valuable resource. So long.
