erickpl I too wanted a Diehard Platinum 4 but the budget wasn't there.

I went with an O'Reillys Super Start Extreme AGM 34/78 battery.

Super Start 34/78EXTAGM - Automotive AGM Battery | O'Reilly Auto Parts

It may have a slightly shorter free replacement (36 month) warranty and 84 month proration, but it is made by East Penn and Johnson Controls.

I put it in and the Jeep started up faster than it ever did. With radio/amps/subs going, no light diminishing like my previous battery did.

So far, I feel pretty comfortable with it, but I can report back in a while if people are interested.

Shelby427 I work part time at an auto parts store. We sell our brand and Optimas.
Just for info, the Optimas sell so poorly, we had em marked down to 50% off for a month to try and get them to move. Prominent display rack with 50% mark down on it.

Didn't sell a one.

We don't even display em anymore, rack in the back holds reds, blues, and yellows, all gathering dust.

dcmtex Well, I wish I had seen this before buying the optima but since I didn't and for the price I paid I will have to ride the horse I climbed on. Wish me luck

TexasT I will never again have anything but a Platinum. Worth every dollar and the warranty is awesome (though I've never had to use it).

3025826 Can't emphasize the diehard platinum enough. So happy with mine, running 3 different audio amplifiers one which used to dim the crap out of my lights when volume turned up, even w a capacitor! Now they do not dim at all, and I've barely seen my voltage drop! I've used a winch with my jeep off, battery voltage didn't even hardly drop and it started right up. Diehard platinum = thumbs ups

Apples and oranges. An American made Optima was a good battery, the ones you can buy now, not so much. Of course your old American made one is a good battery. Go buy a new one that is made in me he co and see how well it holds up for you...

kwn306 Never had an issue with a Optima, installed one in the John Deere desiel tractor 7 years ago, it sits in the barn most of the time, we haven't had any snow this year and I went to start it this past Saturday and it fired right up, last time it was started before that was last August.

Border Dave I've had great luck with my red top Optima, but the manufacture date is 06/06 and it says made in Aurora, CO on it. The factory battery in my wife's Chevy Trailblazer died a year ago, but knowing that the Optimas are now Mexican junk, I went to Sears and bought the Diehard Platinum. We couldn't be happier with it. It has a MUCH better warranty than any Optima.

I'd keep running it until it craps out, no sense replacing a good battery. I purchased a new Diehard Platinum for my previous TJ two months before it was stolen and it sucks to be back with a no-name conventional battery that came in my replacement TJ. But until my present battery gives out, and please lord make that happen soon, I'll stay with what's in there... unless I win the lottery.

calrain07 Alright so pretty much 80% sure I'm going to get that P4. Anybody think that I should just keep running my stock battery(had it since 2009) until it dies out or should I just go ahead and switch over now?

With three prematurely failed Optimas, two Yellow Tops and one Blue Top, never again will I buy another Optima battery. The Group 34 Diehard Platinum even weighs 10 lbs. more than the Group 34 Optima, the Diehard Platinum gives more battery per square inch. Go for the Diehard Platinum.

fan of fanboys I use a Interstate Mega-Tron II. I actually ran it in a 1994 Bronco for about 18 months then moved over to my TJ. Barely fits in, had to go in at a sharp angle. But so far 0 issues. But I don't run anything extra on it.

Razorcat Well, this thread is right on time. I was looking at buying a new battery, probably this weekend. I was debating between the optima and the diehard platinum. I've read several not so flattering reviews on the optimas, so was already leaning toward the diehard. This nudges me further in that direction.

The stock jeep alternator produces a lot less than 100 amps at 1500 rpm. Many winches draw about 450 amps under load. You're not powering your winch off your alternator.

The winch will pull just as hard on just the battery alone, the battery has more than enough power to run the winch by itself for more time than many would suspect. Not to mention the alternator can't provide even a significant percentage of the power consumed by a winch with a heavy load on it. The vast majority of power is provided by the battery and to a much lesser amount the alternator since a winch can easily draw over 400 amps and the OE alternator can barely put out more than 100 amps total.

I've had to winch my TJ off the trail three times on battery power alone when various failures (ignition coil, steering box, fuel pump) prevented me from starting the engine. And after fixing things so I could start the engine, I was able to do so on the battery by itself... no jump start was required.

Not that I recommend running the winch on just the battery, I absolutely don't. I'm just saying that a good heavy duty battery by itself will run a winch for far longer than many would suspect. The AH (amp-hour) rating of a battery will confirm that.

NHrubicon You shouldn't be running the winch off the battery-that will kill anything. Get a manual throttle control, put the jeep in neutral and hold the brakes down-rev the engine up to 1500 rpm or more and then run the winch. You'll know right off if you need more rpm-the winch won't pull hard. That's how I was taught at jeep jamborees to do it and I have the same battery I put in my rubicon since 2005! OK,, essentially the same ,,, 25% more for brass ? I'll keep the change for a couple of fill ups.. The battery is, very heavy.. What do you know about the new tech lighter batteries that have hit the market recently? I've only heard hearsay about them.. Cost + benefits = happy jeep..

Odyssey does indeed manufacture the Diehard Platinum but they aren't really exactly the same battery. Internally they are essentially the same but there are external differences like the Odyssey uses more expensive solid-brass aux battery posts. The Odysseys are also about 25% more expensive than their Diehard Platinum cousins are.

G-Rocc I will offer you some advice, from my own failure of course. One thing that you really don't want to fail when you need it us a winch. I killed my battery two times this winter when trying to winch an idiot out of the snow on a trail he never should have been on with bald tires. It was the first time having to use my winch and I thought my standard battery would be fine but it wasn't. Needless to say pony up the cash on those necessary upgrades. I just put in the P4 and it is awesome. I have no complaints now. Don't get in the same situation I was in.

Badass_TJ Im going to buy my diehard platinum this week when i get my bonus check from work.......ive done tons of research and that seems to be the way to go.. im running a red top optima right now, its good for starting the jeep, but the winch kills it as soon as i hit the button..the optima is all so dated 2007, so its probably due.....

SirGeorgeKillian I recommend a tender no matter what you use. I have one mounted under the hood, just plug an extension cord up and let it go....

3025826 Diehard platinums the way to go! I just put one in my jeep and holy crap it will start that baby up now, not to mention the amount of power it can put out over extended periods of time! Go to the website, watch the videos, and then go buy one. They are just as good if not better than $400 odesseys. You won't regret it.

calrain07 Yeah that's what I see around too. Most of the information that says optima is good is from like 2009. I had a red top in my silverado before but I think I got it before they got bought out. I'm figuring that a good battery with >650 cranking amps would be fine to keep the winch going with the car on

Mudweiser Ive heard something to the extent of Optimas being iffy now. Been runnin them for almost 20 years now. Red tops in my wife's cars and trucks, dual yellows in my trucks, Jeep has always had yellows. And my boats i run blues. Ive only had one fail in all those years, other then the standard 8-10 year replacement. My truck runs 4 subs, aux lightning, 12k winch, and whatever other doo dads i stick on it with no problem. My current 06 wrangler i have a yellow in. What is the low down with the problems or whatever people are having with them now? Local battery warehouse i deal with says theres no new issues with them, and their main seller is the Odyssey batteries. Just curious as to whats going on with them.
