The proposal to move one side closer together is really good, you get a lot more contact area... but also the top is a lot more prone to slide off the dolly when you are rolling it over a rough surface (my driveway is tiled). I just took some leftover 2x4 pieces and bolted them vertically to the long side of the dolly (the one opposite the 6" blocks). Now everything is nice and secure, the top fits it a troff and it will take a really bumpy ride to knock it off.
Finally, I initially screwed up and used two fixed and two rotating dolly wheels. Dumb, dumb idea, makes it difficult to maneuver the dolly in tight spaces. Go with 4 rotating wheels.

|Hankey||Okay thanks. I will probably leave the spacing from the side of the trolley to the 1x6 the same as what the spacing to the 1x2 would have been. I can play with it if it needs adjusting.|

|Milkman||Yep the 1x2 just holds the window closed. Your fine making it wider.|

|Hankey||I'd like to build mine out of pressure treated and was wondering what the 1x2 does? Would it matter if I used 1x6? I'm guessing it holds the window in place, but I wanted to make sure using the wider board didn't cause any added stress anywhere. - I can't get a 1x2 in PT and don't want to rip one if it's not necessary.|

Has anyone used this for a TJ hardtop?
Also, what type of wood is recommended for this?

Thanks for posting your findings, confirms what I was thinking of doing also...

I used the dolly for the first time yesterday. Once aboard, the top was stable and it rolled easily. I did find that the dolly is a couple inches wider than necessary so I had to adjust the top position for good support on the pedestals. I'll make a couple changes next time the dolly is empty:
1. Add a locating strip or bars on the flat long edge to align the bottom edge of the HT on the dolly as it lands so the hinge covers will land square on the pedestals the first time.
2. Shorten the 30" frame pieces to cut down the excess width.

Just build one of two dollies! This one is for my father. He's got an '02 TJ. Specs are all the same. I actually ended up using indoor/outdoor carpet in lieu of foam and screwed the ratchets to the outside so the short hook could be used to hang it up when the hard top is on the Jeep.
Overall pretty easy! Takes a little time but well worth it.
p.s. I used a staple gun for the carpet and rolled/folded a bunch for support on the "pillars"

I tried the glue gun, but the 2x4 are long and the glue dried before I could get it all on. I grabbed some tacky spray from my wife's art kit and worked perfectly. I am using a soft felt material (u-haul furniture cover).
Thanks for the replies.
