Can't say as to the value of things, but I am happy with my Rubicon buy.
Got bit about a year ago while driving a stretch of local road and a Wrangler parked with a "For Sale" sign turned my head going past it in my Civic. Couldn't sleep. Drove back two days later and it was gone. Started researching online. Stopped at neighborhood used car lot after they were closed to look over a 2002 Black Wrangler X all jacked up with wheels, rusted paint where lightbars and bumpers were installed, windshield sticker asking $14,995. Stopped at dealership to look at bad-a** new 2012 Black Rubicon with sticker of $31,950. Paid for membership at Tread Lightly to get offer at invoice for $29,750. Still could not make finances work it.
While cruising Craigs List saw a 2006 Rubicon listed 35 miles from me. Called and lady said she had someone coming after 6pm to look, told her I was free this afternoon could I come look. Turns out it was her husband's Jeep and he passed away a year ago. Offered her a $500 deposit while I got my credit union loan, she said "that's fine, I'll hold it for you, I don't need a deposit." Virginia folks are nice like that.
Flame Red, both tops, 33,000 miles, completely stock. Extended warranty until August 2013 for $50 transfer fee at dealership. Paid her asking price: $16,500
Three hundred miles into it today, I see lower front passenger control arm tabs are pounded sideways. Got an appointment tomorrow to weld new aftermarket tabs on it for $180.
Did she know about the damage? I doubt it. She probably never drove the thing herself. She was selling for what the dealership she bought it at was offering her as trade-in.
I think you got a great deal.

The "inspection" site is pretty cool. Might just have to use that if I find one aways from me. Thanks.

I like that in White. Good job! I got mine from a dealer and HATE dealers. But I brought the truck & trailer (and hid them from the dealer, which isn't easy) as I knew I wanted to get the beastie.
I looked for over a year before getting what I ended with (wife's requirements of LJ and auto made it harder, trust me).

Purchasing sight unseen was definitely scary. Fortunately I have family in the area who was able to take a look and take it for a test drive. I also hired Inspect My Ride Vehicle Inspections | Vin Check | Car History Report to do their 150-point inspection. I think that cost me $130 but I felt like the piece of mind was worth it before locking myself into buying it.
Going to be a long couple weeks of waiting before I can pick it up!

|Granman||Wow that is a damn good price. '06's near me with close to 100k miles are going for 17/18k so I think you made out pretty damn good. Good thing you held out and waited to find the right one. My search lasted maybe 4 months and I spent a little more than what I thought the '01 with 150k miles on it was worth but I am satisfied. Again I think you came out on top.|

Well good luck. I hope it turns out to be exactly as you have seen it in your mind. Tough to purchase it sight unseen (other than the photos), especially when you have a long drive to get there.
I look forward to your future posts bragging about how much you are in love with it.
I am certain you are already forming your short-list of modifications you will begin once it is home.

|Granimal||This one was actually on eBay motors, but it was a little unique in that the seller was requiring cash and pick up about an hour north of Asheville, North Carolina. Because the only thing I had ever purchased on eBay before this was a vintage IU t-shirt for $12, I was of course hesitant so I contacted him and asked if he'd be willing to do the deal outside of eBay. He was willing, but wanted to wait until the auction ended just in case it sold on there. I didn't want to risk losing the Jeep so I ended up bidding at the very last second and was the only bid. I think he was a little disappointed that he didn't get multiple bids and a higher price, but clearly I was ecstatic. Not being an eBay pro, I actually bid quite a bit higher than that original asking price because I was afraid there may have been a reserve set higher or something.|

That was a sweet deal. Two questions for ya Granimal: First, what site did you eventually find it on (craigs list, auto trader....)? and what part of the Country is it coming from?

|Beaker541||Great buy ! I was in your same situation .. I have been trying to get back into a wrangler for quite a few years now and my ideal one was a low mileage TJ Rubicon stock so I could make it mine .. And we (my wife and I)were finally in a situation where I was able to swing it (as long as i could fit 2 carseats in back) and someone was smiling down on me because the same night I started "seriously" looking if found an 06 silver Rubi with only 44000 miles on it with both tops listed for 18500 on Craigslist .. I jumped all over it and ended up getting it for 18 .. I haven't had it a month yet but I haven't quit smiling since I got it sounds like u got a great deal and congrats on the find !!|

|Potoo||I bought an 06 rubi a few months ago and you got a great price IMO. I had to replace the battery first thing. I had a few more miles and also replaced the clutch. Then the transmission need some work, same 6spd. I only wish I had a soft top. But I love it.|

Thanks guys. I'm really excited.
Granman - I have been looking for this exact Jeep ('06 Rubicon, manual, white but I also would have bought silver, low miles, etc.) for just short of a year. I have been close twice and I think I have a pretty good grasp on what these Jeeps are worth, but please, if anyone has any thoughts good or bad, let me know. I based my pricing research more on what I've actually seen for sale on cars.com, locally, craigslist, autotrader.com, ebaymotors.com, etc. mainly because of the extreme differences in suggested prices from Edmunds and Kelley Blue Book. Edmunds lists the value of the Jeep I purchased (from a private party in "clean" condition) at $14,996. KBB lists it at $20,638 in "good" condition from a private party.
The first Jeep I nearly bought was in Louisville, KY at a dealership. They were asking $19,995 with a hard top, but with 57K miles, some rust, a stereo that didn't work, and it reeked of smoke. They wouldn't budge at all on the price really and thank God I did not buy that vehicle.
The second Jeep I nearly bought had 14K miles and was in some beach town in North Carolina. They were asking $21,000, but it sounded like there was a lot of room in there. I never actually made the trip to see this one as it fell through my hands basically as I was making travel arrangements. The guy said it smelled like a beach and dogs in the interior. I was willing to live with that (and try everything to get it out) for 14K miles.
Anyway, I ended up getting this one for $16,999. I am happy with that price, and quite honestly probably would have paid more. It was driven by an older woman for most of its life and was garage kept, no smoking, etc. However, there are some scuffs in the paint (to be expected on an '06 Wrangler I suppose). There is also some corrosion on the battery. I'm going to try baking soda and water on that, but expect I may have to replace that soon.

My New Rubicon
Just paid the deposit on my new (to me) Wrangler. Weather has been incredible the past few days and the forecast looks great (compared to the typical Indiana March weather)! Can't wait to pick it up and bring it home. Unfortunately that is still three weeks away, but I think we are going to do some serious bonding over that 8 hour drive.
Its a 2006 Rubicon. 38K miles. 6 speed. Completely stock... at least for now.
