I don't know, but in my experience my 98 TJ has some of the tightest rear seatbelts of any vehicle I've ever owned and would have no reservations about installing a child seat in my factory rear seat belt configuration.

JDsDream "i have no openings in the crease crease"

In the picture, you show the seat lifted and your belts laying flat on the floor. The openings referred to are the ones used to push those back through when the seat is in the upright position. check again, there has to be slots/openings for those to go through. that is where you should find the metal bar. just an observation

tmbrdr69 I have no problem putting a car seat in my 2000 TJ. Over course I can only put the car seat behind the passenger seat, as I have my seat all the way back. Now my 6 year old daughter rides in the right front seat in her car seat with air bag deactivated and loves it. I could fit two car seats on the back bench if I had to. Nothing else would fit back there with two car seats. Jeeps are great family fun vehicles. Theres nothing quite like looking in the mirror and seeing your child with a big grin from the air blowing through their hair.

This sounds like a good idea! Thanks a ton, this might be perfect.

By any chance do you have a picture?

Thanks!

I took a picture of my back and there is a total of 6 metal loops mounted in the floor. Not sure if those are for securing cargo or if those are the latch system. There are four in the trunk - which I can't really get to from the front thanks to the Add-A-Trunk. And then there are two under the front edge of the rear bench - not helpful either. I guess I may have to remove the trunk, eh? Or just use the seatbelt - which may be a problem since you said that the seat doesn't really fit right behind any of the front seats...and the Recaro is huge.

Jma20a: Thanks for making the effort with the pics, I have the same switch, so I actually knew how to turn off the airbag - sorry if I wasn't more clear in my question!

Mr4x4: cute girl! Won't need a pic of the front installation, trying to get it in the back so the wife can come, too

My 1st post

Sorry to bump this but I am the proud new owner of a 97 TJ that I'll be picking up tomorrow.

I got rid of my 2 seater Shelby Cobra so I could have a fun car that my 14 month old son could ride in, and the Jeep is perfect. However, the 97's do not have a child seat latch so I was wondering if anyone has an pics or ideas of how to install a child seat into a 97 to 02 Wrangler (I believe the 03's are the first year for the child latches.

Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

RokleM How about 2 seats? We have twins on the way. I have a 2000 Sahara.

Sorry to bring back the old thread. I've found VERY little on the subject.

njatrtljp thats what i am afraid of, not having enough real space. we only have the two jeeps and I dont think they will be good for any sort of long trip. which im sure trips back home after the baby is born will be required. but it does look like the seat fits pretty well back there.

4point Thats one happy looking kid
05-15-2008 05:42 PM
Triple88a Thats great, right next to the back window so the little man can flick people off while hes back there.

TXST8tj rear facing in the back of my 97. (i added the H clamp thing after i realized i didn't put it on).
you can kinda see in the second pic, an umbrella stroller barely squeezes back there. the diaper bag goes on the floor under/behind the carseat.

Triple88a I would remove the stock rear seat, drill through the floor and mount the child seat to the floor. I saw above in the thread someone mentioned moving the stock back seat backwards couple of inches. NOT A GOOD IDEA. The seat is held in place by the pivoting hinge type thing in the front HOWEVER its also held by a clip in the rear. If you relocated the front this will cause the seat to be able to lift off in the back, sort of like when you take it out. I wouldnt think you'd want your child to have the stock seat and the baby seat and its own body weight being held in place by the seatbelt in case of an accident. I moved it a bit when i installed my sub and on bigger holes or uneven roads the back seat was lifting off and turning on the back on that hinge. If you really want to move the back seat, move the back locks too. Not just the front ones.

njatrtljp Well all, after finding out we are expecting in October we have been concerned about fitting baby seats in our jeeps (04 Rubicon and a 98 4-banger). Finding this thread is great news for us as we dont want to get rid of of our jeeps. I do have a few questions though. Where would the airbag switch be on my 04? Does anyone have any pics of these seats set up in the back seat? Also where does everyone put everything else that you need to take with the baby? Thanks for any help/advice you all might have.

juspimpin my 05 X does not have locking rear seat belts...my boy is 4 but we still have the seat in the via seat belt...if you pull the lap belt real tight, the upper does not need to lock to remain tight...

spend extra time on installing seats...improperly installed seats are worse than no seat sometimes...

sean42069 My son is 10 months old now and getting ready to move to a forward facing seat,
we have been using a 30lb Graco seat with base, that thing is HUGE. my wife ordered it online as part of a "travel" set.. yeah right, the matching stroller that came with it for 200 bucks is so huge its like pushing a "shopping cart" (thats what i call those little rice burners with the wing on the back) it has only been used once. Leave it to my wife to buy everything just because its "matching"
I usually just leave the base in the back seat and it only takes a few seconds to get him latched in. Up until recently we have always put him behind the passenger seat(since my wife is only 5-3 and im 6-2) she can skoot her seat forward a bit and it fits nice and tight.
but recently we had to fit 4 adults+kid into the heep and i tried putting him in the middle using the "latch system".
a little bit harder to get him in, but it lets both front seats slide all the way back and you can fit(albeit a PITA) two adults on either side of the car seat and still have all 5 of you with seatbelts

UNLIMITLESS I have a 97 with 2 cars seats in the back. My daughter has a Simpson Racing seat and my son is still in his "littleguy" seat. My seat belts will lock if you pull them all the way out and go back slow.
I wish my 97 TJ had the front airbag override, my daughter would love it! I think they added it in 98/99.

What year is your TJ? I know I just sold my rear belts to a guy that had a TJ with non-locking seatbelts in the rear. I think 2002 or 2003 the government mandated that they all ratchet when pulled all the way out.

n8smitty I've never used a rear facing seat, but when you go to a front facing seat they fit nice. I put both my kids in the back and they love riding with the top off.

wtrubi03 I have also heard of people moving the back seat mounts back a few inches, so the seat sits right up next to the rear gate. but like I said I have just heard of this being done I don't even know for sure if its possible or if it makes a difference. I have also heard that you can buy seat belts that hook to the anchors on the floor of the jeep so then you would have a middle seat belt. Try searchin the web and other forums for those possibilities.

Walkeraviator I will be in this same boat in Sept. I know mine doesnt have any child seat latches because it is a 97. Any thoughts as to how to mount it? I hope not, more reason o buy a 4 door jk.
03-04-2008 11:09 AM
wtrubi03 '03 X's have the same back seat too.
03-04-2008 11:08 AM
wtrubi03 yeah if your back seat is different than mine than I don't really have a good solution. I found out how to do it in mine by looking in the owners manual so you might give that a try, or I guess you could try to locate a rear seat out of an 03 rubicon and then you could do it like i do. Good luck man.

Thanks for the explanation, but your bench must be different from mine. i have no openings in the crease nor do I feel the little bar in the crease (that's where my wife's car has them, but not the Jeep).
