japan, yes. it's actually a CJ3B. jeep gave mitsubishi permission to build it over there some time ago. so in essence, mitsu. built a real jeep...they just stamped their logo on the grille, but they say JEEP on the sides of the hood. pretty interesting part of Jeep's history.
a guy two streets down from us in the neighborhood as a black one in pristine condition with about 4" of lift and 33s.

|richp||The X was the method they used to stop people from ordering the SE with the 4.0 which you could do in 97 and 98 instead of paying the extra $2K for the sport stickers and 5 spoke steel wheels. I guess it worked out, gave you the good basic wrangler with the 6 and not too many bells and whistles, guess the single X decal was cheaper than the 'Sport' decal figuring $200 a letter on both sides.... LOL|

looks good to me id say its a good deal, but not a steal, its all about weather u feel a conectionw ith the jeep though, when i first saw mine when the owners garage door opened up i KNEW i HAD to have it, if you dont feel that you may want to keep looking
oh wait its a 4 banger?
i thought X's had I6's?

ok, so i know im probably beating a dead horse here...but its a lot of money and i guess im just looking for knowledgeable opinions.
i spoke to the guys at the mitsu dealership, that green jeep is still on their lot, but they fixed the body damage (said $2k in repairs), and they ended up bumping the internet price to 12,991 (from 11,235 or something). last time i was talking price with them i said 10k and they didnt want to go down that much, so i left. this time i said the absolute max ill go is 11,500. the dude said hell talk to his manager and call me tomorrow.
but what really would be a good price for the car, if they dont go for 11,500? i mean, i really dont want to go higher, but if 12k is still a steal, then why walk away from it? right?
its a 2003 wrangler x, 58.5k miles, 5-speed, green, runs good, in CO.

Rule of thumb, any used car is going to take a grand to 'get right'. I'd do all fluid changes at the start, new battery at the start, probably a track bar, people don't grease them enough and they get loose, new shocks and maybe new rubber.
Figure $140 for an Optima Red top, $100 for fluids if you do them yourself, $500 for tires in the 30x9.50 category, I'd probably do a new belt and thermostat too when I did the fluid changes, engine, coolant, transmission, both diffs.
As far as the body damage, new grill ~$150, have a paint shop shoot it based on the vin number or just get it shot black, takes about 2 hours to unbolt the old one and bolt the new one in. The grill is the only one you can't get aftermarket, patent on the design, that comes from chrysler/jeep, at least the last two I had to do on ours.
I'd also pull those funky rocker steps and put real ones on before you rip them off.

its a fairly large mitsubishi dealer. by large i mean they have a good size inventory and are not just a used car lot, if that makes sense.
here are some pictures of the 03, with the damage on the grill. they didnt post any pictures of the passenger side door with that damage.

what about this one? 2003 wrangler x, 58.5k miles on it. i6 manual, runs well. has a dent in the front grill, near the hood right in the center plus some paint chips around that area, and one of the doors has some damage to it. dealer "guesstimated" about $1000 to fix the damage. said 10k (my offer before i left) was not enough. theyre asking in the $11,300 range.
theres another one im looking at also. 2002 wrangler x. 64k miles, i6 manual. needs a new battery and possibly alternator. otherwise drove well, but i thought the suspension might have been a little loose/wobbly. might have been the road though. asking price is $11k.

One more thing dont go for the miles!! Jeeps run very strong even reaching 140k.
My friends TJ it's a 97 sport I6 and he bought it with almost 135K for about $6000
The point is that Jeep still running as good as new,no leaks,sounds good averall in great shape.
My Jeep it might work as example as well When I bought it it has 99.9k and runs very strong,no problems at all @ 110k.

|richp||OK, I can see where he's coming from, not everybody can look over a Jeep and tell whether it's good or not. He does not want to take a chance on his own judgment from a private seller and he's smart enough to recognize that fact. At least from a dealer there is usually some kind of warranty vs a private seller where 'You bought it now it's your problem'...|

gotta defend my ride lol. Nah but i know that the I6 is the ideal engine in a tj, and if you can find one for a good price than by all means get it, but i the 4 bangers are usually a grand or so less than 6 cylinders which makes it easy on the wallet, especially for broke college guys like myself, plus its a reliable engine that'll get you where you need to be...i think alot of times people make the 4 banger out to be alot worse than it really is, and thats why i gotta come to the rescue sometimes

thanks guys. yeah, i test drove an i6 today and definitely noticed the power difference. if i can find a good deal id rather go with the i6 myself.
are there any known issues i should be asking about with the tj? im mainly looking at 98-2004 years. im new around here so i dont know if theres a "garage" section or something with things like that which i might have missed. sorry if i did.
this wrangler i saw today the dealer said it needs a new battery. we jumped it with a starter pack and it went pretty good, except that it shut off a couple of times when i stopped at a light. it started right up and went fine when i applied some gas, but im a little concerned that it might be something else besides just the bad battery. any clues as to what else it might be?

|bpowa||jonny "the 4banger defender" comming soon to a theater near you j/k nothing wrong witht he SE, but I would only buy one at a very good price as oppose to a I6. yes gas does meigh slightly towards the 4 cyl; but I would consider it more if I were to get 10-12mpg more instead of 3mpg differece.|

Well when you consider most 6 cylinder owners get about 16 mpg and most 4 cylinder owners get about 18-19, then multiply that by the number if times you fill up a year and you could be saving a few hundred bucks a year with the 4 cylinder. Granted you have to accept the trade off with highway power, but ive never had a problem with my 4 banger. If you find a good deal on a 4 banger go for it, but if you find a good deal on a 6 even better!
Moving on my 99 SE cost me about 5200, it had 150,000 miles on it with a new engine and it was mechanically sound. IMO thats way to much for a 98 SE with problems, look elsewhere and find one in good shape. What the dealer has it listed for is well above blue book value i believe. Try to find a private sale somewhere, you usually find the best prices when you do that.
Personally i would not pay above 5500 for a 98 SE.
