'97-'06 should be the same filter.
That is the filter I just put in my '98

Congrats! I noticed a nice difference in throttle response with the CAI - upgrade the exhaust the next chance you get and you'll fall in love all over again! Just be sure that filter doesn't get too dirty or you'll suffocate the engine...

i have a k&N cold air intake. because it was installed when i got it. havent heard great things about K&N.

EMSRubi I would prefer the throttle body over a performance chip or programmer. Those things are a waste.

Mine is a YJ no TBI.
But oh well, I do feel it respond a bit different than pre installation.

Nice job but be aware that throttle body spacers do literally nothing for performance, mpg, etc. when installed under the type of throttle body the various TJ engines use.

Spacers can do wonders when placed under the old style of throttle body that had a fuel injector in it (called throttle body injection or TBI) and carburetors but not under the air-only type of throttle body the TJ has.

I just installed an AirAid CAI and a Poweraid throttle body spacer n my 4cyl YJ today and LOVE IT!!!!!!!

I used to work for NAPA back in the late 90's..... their filters were re-badged Wix back then so I assume they still are today.

However, it doesn't filter the air as well. These oil filter were designed for street cars to increase air flow and horse power, they didn't need to filter the air as well as an off road vehicle does.


From what I have learned about Jeeps the stock air box is not as restrictive as most vehicles. Try putting your fingers over the opening while the engine is running, you'll feel the air flow.
Take a look at at some other vehicles air boxes, like the Ford Ranger for example. The intake hole in the air box is tiny. But on a Wrangler it is pretty big.

I have however been looking into these. Amsoil Ea Synthetic Nano filters. They claim to be the same technology they used in the Abrams M1 tank air filters.

You are correct sir, I use that air filter for normal driving on the street!
I bought it for easy Maintenance of the filter. Also If I got offroading I always try to stay just up to my wheels in the water, or the lower part of my rocker. I will agree that a paper filter is the way to go if your going to be going into a lot of "Dirty environments where dust and a lot of particles are present. I used intakes on all my vehicles before this but as you stated the jeep air box is sufficient for my needs.

good luck to the op in your decision! and it was a rectangle drop in filter not a cone that I used.

commodore_dude I've been using Napa Gold (since I removed my Truflow foam filter), it looks exactly like the pictures of the Wix filter... only place that has AC Delco in stock locally wants 30 bucks for it, and I doubt it's twice as good as Napa

Go ahead an swap out for a decent stock filter now. Then start saving for a better system - I have the AirAid CAI, throttle body spacer and a Cat Back exhaust on my 4.0L. Significant gain in performance, economy and sounds great! Well worth the money if you intend on keeping her for a while!

If it is ANYTHING like a K&N air filter, it will never see the inside of any of my Jeep engine compartments. One K&N air filter was more than enough for me.

Jerry Bransford AC-Delco. Purolator, and Fram all make very good paper element OE replacement air filters. AC-Delco seems to come in at the top of the various paper element air filter tests I've ever read.

opcocrg I say paper, but I have no science talk to back up my suggestion. I just removed my K&N and replaced it with a paper filter last week. I didn't want to mess with servicing the K&N so I just picked up a parer unit. My TJ had the K&N when I bought it and I ran it for 8 years but after reading far more peoples suggestions to use a paper filter I decided to switch.

EMSRubi This is a can of worms you're about to open. Some say air filters aren't worth the money, some swear by them. Do some research other than this website, I know JP mag did dyno tests for the major companies on air intakes. The air raid cold air intake came out on top performance wise in a wrangler tj. Also with upgrades you can't stop at just an upgraded air intake you have to get new headers, cat back exhaust, etc to feel any difference in performance. Make sure that everything you do though is either 50 state legal or legal for your area. Pain in the ass? Welcome to the world of jeeps.
