Itd be worth it! Stronger axle all around, check my build out and stu olsens website. Theres not much more you have to do then getting a D44 and rebuilding it.

I think the best way to know if this is a good decision is to bum a ride in a soft top Jeep and see how it feels to you.

crallscars hay, fuel milage has become important now that fuel is closing in on $4 a gallon.

I gotta save money where I can so that I can afford all the repair parts for this thing!

lensam I only have a soft top but I don't regret buying it , it was quite warm when it was down in the 20s but don't know how the ac is gonna work, not that I care with a convertible now. Noise? Big deal it's a Jeep. Theft? Don't leave you're valuables lying around. MPG? Then you shoulda bought a Prius !!!
03-22-2012 10:57 AM
crallscars No. save the hard top

I just changed over from hard to soft top,

Plus side,
1.You get to take the top down on nice days.

Negitive side,
1. it's noisy,
2. you use more gas (about 1 to 1.5 mpg)topless even worse 2+ mpg
3. not secure, a zipper or knife away from a theft
4. harder to heat/cool a soft top
5. you have to deal with zippers and plastic tabs to put the top up
6. hard to see thru plastic windows
7. to put groceries/stuff in back you have to deal with zippers & tabs

solman Go for it! Selling my hardtop and full doors paid for my Currie JJ adjustable control arms (all 8), Everything I needed to build my own 8.8, and a used set of 35s

A well maintained soft top will be nearly as quiet as a hardtop around town and light highway duty, but they do wear out eventually and coupled with wear and tear along with dirt and extreme temps, the life decreasesn

He will atleast spend $1,000 on a 8.8 to get in his TJ. You can get hardtops for cheaper.

If youre wheeling alot more youll appreciate the better flexible material, the lighter top. Being able to.just pull it if you want, and the hard top wont get you over a rock, tree whatever.
03-22-2012 07:22 AM
McDaniel sold my TJ hard top never a regret, drove a yj in wisconsin/minnesota for years with only half doors and a soft top without issue. Only adavantage to the hard top is that low lifes can't unzip the window to get in to steal stuff. That is the bottom line. Putting the hard top on/off and storage are the down side.
03-22-2012 05:41 AM
denisbaldwin Why don't you keep the top and look for a good deal on an Explorer 8.8? You'll get more axle for less money and they're everywhere.

Redsand sell it and get a 88
03-22-2012 12:35 AM
Jeep_guy3 I was in the same boat, I was gonna sell my hard top and get a soft top and use the left over cash for more upgrades.

Reason that I didn't (granted this is just my opinion) if I changed my mind and didn't like the soft top it's hard to find hard tops and expensive as hell (you have the luxury of trying it first). It helps the resale value having that hard top, seems they are more desirable. They are quieter and i like the looks of a hard top better. I have a spot to store my hard top.

Trust me....you WILL get used to having only a soft top. Don't get me wrong, hard tops are great and I liked mine, but, when I weighed what I could get for selling it against what I could do with the money I was getting for it, how often I actually had it on against how often I left it off, and how big of a pain in the ass it was "in my opinion" to store it when it was off.....I was a lot heavier on the "sell it" side than I was on the "keep it" side.
