Cricketboy 137,000 miles on mine so far. Bought it at 129,000 miles. It'll last forever, IF it's taken care of. Regular oil changes (I do every 3000), check fluid levels, and follow maintenance schedules. A little piston slap seems normal for these engines but shouldn't make a difference if it's taken care of. Mine has piston slap and burns oil (probably from poop maintenance from previous owner), but it still runs and performs well off road!

OverkillYJ I will say I have only had my Jeep 3 years. Bought it with 97k. In 3 years I have done exactly 10k miles. So many miles of that were in the woods beating the living crap out of it like you wouldn't believe. Nothing wrong with it at all. Runs like a top. I am about to sell the motor and everything except the axles.

You cant beat on a motor more than I have beat on this. New Water pump, new TPC, IAC, quite a few alternators, killed the AX5 twice before upgrading to an AX15, killed a few batteries, every pulley at least once, a radiator, countless belts, new exhaust, steering box. Everything attached to this motor dies, but the block itself is one tough son of a bitch. On top of all this, the kid I bought it from and his uncle he inherited it from did the same things.

If it wasn't for the fact that I want to be able to drive long distances on the highway without any problems, and tow once in a while I would keep it. Since I need to do those thing I bought a 302 last week.

TigWizard Just turned 217k on my 91. Uses no oil, idles a bit rough (need to track down vac leak), no valve noise. A great little engine that will last a long time if not abused too much and maintained well.

Brooklyn yj Recently bought "94....204,000. Planning to drive all year around.
Smooth shifting .

Was just wondering "What is the highest miles any of our members or they know of someone had for a 4 cylinder?'

JMO69 175000 on mine. got it at 173000 a year ago.Only run it in good weather mostly. RUNS GREAT!!!!! Leaks NOTHING!!! NO SMOKE!! Put a quart in every 2 months. Has a bad upstairs rattle, and i have another 2.5 that i'm gonna do up and drop in within the next 6 months. But this thing runs FREAKISHLY well for the miles and noise it makes.

Ironbutt1345 I was fortunate enough to buy my 95 YJ 2.5 from a guy who kept meticulous records. Along with the Jeep, I got a 3" thick file folder full of records. It has 186,7xx miles, on it's second transmission, tons of work on the suspension and differentials, Detroit Locker, 4.56 gears, custom bumpers, winch, on and on. The engine is a little anemic on hills, but heck, it's a Jeep, I'm not out to set any speed records! The thing runs great, I'm happy with it. I looked at seems like 500 before I bought this one, and I intend to keep it until I am unable to drive it anymore, and then one of my kids will get it. I fully intend and expect it to last that long, because I intend to maintain it. Anyway, point being, look around, there's a good one out there, and when you find it, get it and maintain it, and it will take care of you!

DirtyRob 12,000 here after a complete re-build. Runs great. It died around 100,000 with regular oil changes according to the previous owner. He said it lost compression in 2 cylinders. Some folks seem to get a lot more out of theirs. This is my 1st 4 banger Jeep so I have no other experience than that, but I am not really impressed except for using less fuel on the trail than my 4.0's do. It gets about the same on the highway as the others

Barrie 94 with 125,0000 on it. Runs great. Uses no oil and I would go cross country with it tomorrow. 2nd trans and transfer case though.

mikhail2400 have a 2001 with right at 140k on it. change oil every 5k miles as it doesn't get driven much. at the last oil change the oil still looked like it was only a week old. seen a lot of posts here with some very high mileage listed. 2.5l will last you as long as it does, theres no end date on the motor. treat it good and it will do the same for you.

snowgoer540 Fram is about the worst oil filters you can use. They are paper backed inside, total garbage. Also 2,500 is a little early. Just my $0.02 though.

RawhideClab 136,xxx on my 1989 2.5. I have no idea if it has had any major work done to it tho. Bought it with 134xxx on it 6 months ago. Changed the oil 1500 ago and the oil still looks great on the dip stick, not "new" looking just a little darker than new.

ILIVEDRAB Have a 94 four banger bought it with 172000 just hit 210000 ,I change the oil every 2,500 use HM Castrol and HM fram fillter, drive 40 miles 6 days a week no worries use a little marvel mystery oil here and there runs like a charm .

brokeagin 95 with 220K plus. I had a piston skirt break off of number three cylinder, snatched the head off, replaced the piston & rings and stuck the head back on it. Still ticking along and just gotta keep it running until I finish gathering parts and scatter the whole Jeep...

BrandonYJReed 154,200 runs great no leaks, the ax-5 is a bastard tho...

DARKSLAYER56 1990 @ 290,000. Valve cover gasket has been removed so, probably been rebuilt at some time.
09-18-2012 08:21 AM
punchesdfw Just over 200K. Original engine, 2nd transmission. Driven every day.

Jedholmes Right now im sitting at 115K in my 94YJ. The PO didnt seem to take care of it to well as the coolant was the worst I had ever seen. Flushed the coolant, Did a complete Tune-up: Plugs(which actually looked pretty good) Wires, Dist, Fuel Filter, Sea Foam. She seem to be running pretty strong. I do have some tapping going on and I think I am going to have to put new rings in, but hey I'll drive it until it dies.

Awe man that's not very inspiring knowing that I'm only 1/2 way threw its life cycle, I'm waiting for it to die so I can get something bigger lol. But I do love my little 4-banger to death

bzar13 Exactly!

Surfinglbi23 Mine has 178k on it, '95. Runs great, about to do a tune up this weekend. Done nothing besides regular maintenance.
07-31-2012 08:20 PM
Defcon 1 My 91' has 210,000 and it doesn't burn a drop of oil, (it does have a case of lifter-tick though, but what YJ doesn't)
07-31-2012 07:49 PM
honeaj My 95 2.4 has almost 255,000. Previous owner said it was rebuilt at 150. Runs great. Grinds going into 2nd.

UberJeep Purchased my 94 in Sept '11 with 114,000. Now it just turned 123. My Bayliner (boat) has the same engine (boat is carburated and Jeep is fuel injected) and it runs awesome! Boat has 100 hours on it but if I use it as replacement itl would be like new! 2.5 has been around for very long time for a good reason.
07-26-2012 07:17 AM
VinceTj So far im a 245 xxx and its running strong. Planning on building a stroker out of a 4 banger actually, the weak link with the 2.5 its the AX-5
07-26-2012 07:08 AM
95YamJam 95' yj, 183 k right now. Runs strong. Sounds like it's gonna come apart anyday lol! but has never given me trouble and doesn't burn oil.
07-25-2012 10:28 PM
OverkillYJ I looked at one when i was shopping for mine, 800,000 with two rebuilds. And it ran like a top.
07-25-2012 09:33 PM
DirtyRob Mine had a new engine at 112,000. From what I have seen 200,00 is luck on a 2.5. while 300,00 + is not uncommon on a 4.0. I have had 3 with over 300,000 and ran great, but this is my 1st 2.5 (90 YJ) and I am not impressed at all
