A few years ago, a handful of 4x4's, but specifically TJs with 33's and 35's could not make it through this mud hole, guy comes along with his bone stock (right down to the tires) CJ-3b and walked, literally, through. Yes, it was lighter, but I can help but think those skinny tires had something to do with it.
Maybe Mythbusters could do a mud boggin special...

Which is why they run tall skinny "pizza cutter" tires in areas like Alaska on the roads since they want to get down through several inches of snow or mud to better traction below. It's only on the deep stuff they'll run wider tires.

|arcountryboy||Other than the fact I get stuck less with skinnies, I cant scientifically prove they work better in the mud. It is a long common though that they do though. On the rocks, it's a 50/50 argument on which is better, best I can tell, my 9.5 work just as good as a 12.5, which means a 12.5 works just as good as a 9.5. In the end, I think it's personal preference. I went with the 9.5's due to mud and the fact that you can only get a 32" TSL in 9.5 or 12.5 and I didnt want to buy new rims. I have a 5.3, 4L60E, a 203/205 doubler, a 14B rear, and a D60 front sitting here so I didnt want to sink any more than I had to. Still saving for links, tube, and tires before I do the build.|

KBR, its Just that a narrower tire would mean more weight per square inch so more pressure down on the rocks/less slippage..I don't really know how true this theory it though, and thats the thing if you cant find the bottom of the mud pit to dig into harder earth you'll just sit there and spin your tires
And I didn't mean literally float, kinda like float like a butterfly sting like a bee haha but thank you for all the help..so would you recommend the 12.5's or 10.5's on a DD from your personal experiences?

Big misconception on the width performance in mud.
The 12.50's don't float they provide more traction. The 10.50's cut and provide less traction. You can also air down further on a 12.50 without it losing a bead on an 8" wide rim. I was down to 10psi with no problems this past weekend. I actually had a conversation with one of my buddies while we were out wheeling this past weekend.
He like his 10.50's because they are more maneuverable and allow him to place his tires better on tricky trails, but hates the fact that they cut in if he is in deeper mud and he usually has to get pulled out.
Both tires sink to the bottom on bad mud so they don't necessarily float they just don't dig in as much on a 12.50.

I've heard the opposite. Skinny tires will dig down through the mud into the harder packed earth.
Skinny tires better on rocks? I would rather have more tire contact on rock vs. less. Doesn't make much sense to me. But I wouldn't put much argument into an inch or so.

Racer, Would I have rubbing issues with the 10.5 tire on stock rims?or just the 12.5?and are the stock wheels 15x8?i thought they were 15x7?
And country boy you're right it kinda reminds me of a Humvee, even though they're 37x12.5!!haha
And I've heard that narrow tires are good for rocks but in mud wide tires help you "float over" it if it's really deep..what experience have you guys had with this?cuz I like to hit a mud big every now n then but if it doesn't make that big of a deal Im probably just gonna go with th 10.5's mainly for less wear and tear on my daily driver.

The 10.50's will weigh a little less, and the factory alloys will probably weigh less then the steelies, which may or may not save some gas.
The 12.50's will give you a larger footprint that does add a good bit of traction on and off road. If you go with steelies then you will likely (and I recommend) go with a 3.75 backspacing. That will, in essence widen your axle by 4". This helps a lifted jeep to be less tippy, especially in off camber situations or tight turns.
I run the 12.50's with steelies.
I also have 3.73's and an auto trans, instead of driving between 70-75 every day I drive between 65-70 and get about the same gas mileage on flat land. It also helps to keep me out of tickets.

I vote 10.5. You said you don't wheel much, and it is mild when you do. The 10.5's will be lighter, and have less rolling resistance, hopefully save some gas and be a little more peppy. You should be able to fit the 10.5 on the Ravines, and adjust the stops, but that seems to be a jeep-by-jeep basis, so your results will vary...nothing some small spacers would not fix. I like the 'stock/sleeper' look too of using stock rims with narrow tires.
I was going to go this route myself, but I am not quite tall enough yet, got a great deal on my 31 KM2s, and am not sure I am ready to take the mileage and performance hit (though more say it is not bad than say it is).

|TJNewbie||Mine are 33x12.50x15 GoodYear Duratracs, but they actually measure 32x11.50x15. Best of both worlds! and the wheels that I got, push them out making them look bigger. I prefer the bigger tire look, but I'm not knocking someone's idea on how their jeep should look. it's just personal preference.|

I like skinny tires. I do mud and rocks and the skinny tires work GOOD in the mud. After reading the 5011 arguments on pirate 4x4 for narrow vs wide tires for rocks, I tried it. I found my skinny tires work great on rocks also. Mine are 32x9.5x15 on stock rims. I dont think they look goofy at all, different, but not goofy. Most people say it looks like a military Jeep. 10.5's will look just as good as 12.5's. That being said, on 33's, I would drop some extra and get some aftermarket with better backspacing. Some black soft 8 style wheels can be bough new with centers and lug nuts for 300.

|Racer38||You are going to have some rubbing issues with the stock wheels and 33's unless you add some spacers to change the back spacing. I have 33 x 12.5 15 on mine and used the Spider 1.5 inch spacers to give me the back spacing I needed on stock Ravine wheels. I like the way it looks and on the 15 x 8 wheel I dont have to worry too much about popping a bead in the woods.|

New jeeper, 33x12.5vs 33x10.5
Okay so I just got my new soft top a few weeks ago, got a new head unit and speakers in the sound pods and I'm putting on my 4" rough country n2.0 kit this weekend..which leads me to my question.
I have stock 15" rims and I want to know if I should get 33x10.5x15 tires to fit on my stock runs or if I should break down and spend the xtra money on some steelies and go with 33x12.5x15.
Does the extra 2" make that much of a difference?my jeep is mainly on road except for a little trail as often as once every 2 weekends or sometimes both Saturday and Sunday..nothing serious just some tearing up mud and climbing hills.
Also, would it look goofy to have 10.5" wide tires instead of 12.5"?It's an lj so I feel like I need some thick *** tires haha
Any help is appreciated thanks guys!!and also any further tips or ideas for upcoming mods!!
