|08fun||i picked up an 08 sahara unlimited 4 weeks ago - love it; used as commuter car to train station, weekend jaunts, golfing, soccer games; we have 3 kids and my 5 yeard old cant wait for me to take the doors off. Going to take the hard top off today - need to make space in the garage. great thread - i had some of the same questions on how "quiet" the soft top would be - but, who cares - cant wait for this to be off today. gonna look on the jeep site for the video of how u put the soft top on - thanks!|

Daily Driver Wrangler X 2Door here. We also have a family car (Honda CRV) then I drive the jeep. I think its perfect for a second car for a family of four.
I went with the hardtop for security.

I recently did exactly what you are describing. About 4 months ago, I went from driving a normal car for the past 8 years and bought an '08 Sahara 2-door soft-top as my daily driver (about 50 miles round trip into the city and back per day). There are certainly pros & cons, but in my opinion the good far outweighs the bad.
A few cons I have found when comparing to your normal average car (I'm just being honest so you know what to expect):
- It will definitely be a rougher ride than what you are used to - there is no getting around this due to how the Jeep seems to be constructed (although this is part of what makes a Jeep so capable when you need it!). However, it is truly not that bad, and you get used to it pretty quickly. The 4-door may be a bit better due to the longer wheelbase.
- The soft-top will naturally be noisier than a normal car, but it is surprisingly more quiet than I would have expected. . . I can listen to the radio or talk on the cell phone completely fine.
- The gas mileage is not great - about 15-17 MPG.
Despite these few items above, it is easy to look past them when you see this cool, rugged machine waiting for you in the parking lot when you leave work at the end of the day. It is incredibly fun and maneuverable, and handles phenomenally in the snow. I'm with you on the kid front - my 3 1/2 year-old can't get enough of it. I love having it as my daily driver, and am looking forward to some warmer weather so I can have the top down a little more long-term. Good luck!

Thanx for the insight. For me, the auto is not an option. I must have the 6 spd. I don't mind the shifting in stop and go, I was talking mainly about using it as a daily driver from a Jeep comfort perspective. I found another thread on one of the Jeep forums where many people have attested to using the Wrangler as a DD with no issues at all.
A few more questions. I was watching the soft top video on Jeep.com (taking it down and putting it up) and it shows an extra set of hands helping out. Can you take down and put up the Sunrider top with only one person? Also, how is it on the highway with the soft top? I remember I once drove from Ottawa to Toronto in a friend's old Jeep with softop and we didn't even bother trying to put on the radio it was so noisy.

|4Jeepn||welcome... we don't flame here... Auto, unless you just enjoy the 6spd. Should be great in the snow, If you in the city then the hardtop might be good idea if you keep things in the jeep. However, I have gone many of winters with just soft tops on various jeep models and been fine. Granted you can't scrape plastic windows.|

I just replaced an 11 yr old F150 with the Unlimited Sahara. I have only the soft top living in new hampshire - but I also have a garage at home and work. I drive 7 miles to work and am really enjoying it. Going from a BMW to a jeep will be different for you - for instance, I went from a friend's Murano to my Jeep today and wow - the comfort level is not even close!!!!

Try the automatic if you are just driving city. It sounds like you may need both hands.
The hard top is a must if it will replace full time car, I eather go topless or hard top. Making a pully for hard top it is quite heavy for one person to take off.

NB Questions. Wrangler Unlimited - City?
No flames pls. Honest questions.
I have 4 kids and a mini van and a 7 year old 3 series BMW which is starting to give me trouble. (Leaking this, squeaking that, etc.)
Looking to replace the car as my daily driver, which for me, generally means driving to work (7 - 8 miles each way) a couple of days a week (I take the subway most days) and driving around on the weekends. Unlikely this puppy would ever see any off-road work (at least as of now) but we do get a fair bit of snow in the winter months (Toronto, Canada), more so than in the past number of years.
Here's my question. I have read tons of reviews about the Wrangler Unlimited and I test drove a 6 spd. the other day. I found it remarkably "smooth and civilized" driving around the city and especially with the amount of driving I tend do (not huge amounts) unlikely it would get tedious in the city. Is it fine for daily driving city street use (even though I would be giving up a huge portion of the fun of a Jeep?)
Also, I have read that on the highway the Sunrider top is super noisy. I would plan on taking the hardtop off sometime in the spring and leaving it off until the winter. I assume many people use a Wrangler as a daily commuter, family vehicle, soft top in the summer (putting it up and down does not appear to be that much of a pain - can it be done one person or do you really need 2 people to help fold down the softop). Any comments?
(By the way, my 5 year old would be beside himself with excitement to ride around in a Jeep! That's got to be worth something?)
