jkcochran Hi, do you know of anyone in North Carolina who can rebuild one or has a used one for sale? It's a Dana 35 4-11 with ABS. Not a common one, I'm told. Funds are tight, or I would just take it to the dealer. My son and father can replace mine, but they are not familiar with rebuilding it. Do you have any sources that I could contact? Thanks for your help and advice.

wwch99tj Yes that would mean the pinion bearings are bad and would be a good idea for a axle rebuild or swap

jkcochran My Jeep has 128,000 miles on it. My dad is coming to "rescue" me tomorrow morning and possibly tow my jeep home. I'll have him look at the pinion gear. If it has play, does that mean it's possibly the rear end bearings?

Dale, I just had new tires put on in December. I've never had the alignment checked, though. I've had vibrations due to tires between 60 and 70 mph. This vibration doesn't feel like that.

wwch99tj Could be the bearings in the rear. Check to see if the pinion has any play. It shouldn't have any "wiggle"
How many miles?

Awful vibration and rattle under my seat

Hi, I'm new to the forum and have a mechanical question. I have a 2000 Jeep Wrangler, that I bought in 2007. I put a lot of miles on in and have not had many problems at all. About a month ago, I started to have a vibration that felt like it was under the driver's seat. It mostly happened when I was downshifting prior to stopping. Last week, a loud tattle started in the same area. I was driving down the highway in pouring rain. During the week it seemed to worsen and then by Thursday afternoon I was afraid to drive it. My son and father both took it for a test drive and thought it was the rear universal joints. Friday, my son removed the rear drive shaft and took it for a test drive and felt no vibrations at all. So he replaced both u-joints. When I drove it later, I still had the rattle, but the vibration was gone. I drove it about 50 miles down the interstate, running about 65 - 75 mph. When I exited off the interstate, it suddenly started an auful vibration and loud rattle. I drove slowly to my destination, about 5 miles. Now I'm wondering if it wasn't the U-joints after all. Or if driving it without the rear drive shaft caused the front u-joints to go bad. My dad thinks it could also be the bearings in the rear end. Any help or direction would be great. My late husband was my mechanic. Since he passed away, I've had to depend on my son and father to do my mechanic work.
