RRTRI Funny on this thread getting resurrected. I was just up here to poke around about regearing to make myself comfortable with a choice I made. Wife's JKU has been rolling on 35's with 3.21 gearing. I've been calling it drivable but we go back and forth on how drivable it is depending on where/how you are driving it.

Broke down yesterday and committed to having my local Indy 4x4 shop do a regear to 4.88 (manual trans) for her. Cost is coming in at just a few dollars shy of $2200 all in including tax.

I want to do mine as well (3.73 currently) but I'm going to hold off on committing to a ratio until I see how her 4.88 feels.

jmcd I did 5.38's in my 2011 JKUR. auto w/ 3" lift 35's and some extra weight in front. It tachs 2650 @ 70mph. Averaging 16.5-17 mpg, sometimes a little better on highway. Best mod I've done! And It makes a good oportunity to put these purdy covers on. (I think they are worth about 10hp)

gloviechap That's exactly my next project after reading this...i just put 35s and 3" lift on my 11 auto jk THIS WEEK and thought it was all done for awhile...smh.... how would 5.13 be towing a small trailer (M416)? it seems to be perfect on all aspects so far besides the $1500 ofcourse... What are the list of parts needed?

Yes, if you have a pre-2012 with an auto transmission. A number of folks here run 5.13s with that set up on stock tires. With a manual transmission though, that'll be too high.

nickmimi glad to hear it worked well for you. I am debating on changing the gears from 4.10 to 5.13 but as of now, I am not going to a bigger tires (sticking with stock rubi tires/wheels). Will this be okay?

I have a Word doc with a list of mods I'm considering. No matter how many of the mods I actually install, the list only gets LONGER.

zmotorsports Glad you are happy with the gears. I noticed similar results with my 2011 Rubicon going from ~13.4 MPG back and forth to work to 15.1 over the last dozen tanks or so of fuel. I have gotten as good as 17 MPG on the interstate with the cruise set at about 67-68 MPH.

Performance has been greatly improved and I can actually run without having to turn my O/D off. Best mod for an automatic equiped JK in my book.

Manual trans equiped JKs will benefit as well but the autos came improperly geared from Jeep in my opinion.

And, didn't know I had one, the ECO light is on almost all the time.

I am very happy.

Now, about the price.

I seem to be getting about 2-3 mpg better, computed not the liar in the Jeep.

With that it will take about 50,000 miles to get my money back at $4 a gallon.

Since I see my having this Jeep for over 100,000 miles, it looks good.

Now about that warranty from Jeep.........

Bottom line for me is this was worth it, but for others there are a lot of things to think about before you do it.

I think thats what im going to look into for my 2011 jku with the auto, sounds like youre happy with it. Tired of fighting the hills!! Thanks for the info!

MTH Great write-up, and it coincides with everything I've read about the pre-2012 auto trans JKs. Wildly undergeared straight from the factory. You put on 35s and you can forget about it. But the problem isn't the motor--it's the gears. Congrats!

It has been a week now since i changed to 5.13's and thought I would tell you what I think and feel about it.

The cost was just shy of $1500 out the door and used G2 gears and Master Install sets.

The price was my major problem, but after the slow off the start and time to highway speeds as well as running with OD off, I had enough.
