jpdocdave you really need to go by a dial indicator torque wrench, it measures the inch pounds of force to turn the pinion (without the carrier in). specs are usually about 12 in/lb (this is the bearing preload). but when i do a seal, i just use locktite, and hit it good with the impact.

I thought the torque was closer to 250 ? kinda based it on the 5ft long steel bar and the two ton floor jack to break one of them loose

chiro2736 Well just got back from the mechanic. The shop owner was the one who originally tightened the pinion. they took it for a test drive and determined that it was the tires DOOOH!!! They had never been balanced! Well not an entire waist the mechanic tried to sell me an explorer 8.8 rear end. Nice to know he can do that for future referance.

It is nice to go in to a mechanic with a little knowledge!
He was grateful that I came in to have it checked, and so Was I!

jpdocdave i agree, have it checked out right away, probably loose. there was just a thread here about doing this. the nut is supposed to be replaced according to whoever makes the rules. i've seen a couple out of hundreds come back loose, but i've never had a problem reusing the nut, but applying lock tite when doin so.

Jerry Bransford Backlash won't be affected unless the mechanic just totally blew it and didn't tighten the pinion nut at all. Likely he just didn't tighten it enough. I have replaced pinion seals on different axles several times and many years after Tom Wood told me to just tighten the pinion nut to 160-180 ft-lbs., just doing that has always worked fine for me.

richp Depends on how he did it, in my book if you replace the rear pinion seal you also have to check the backlash once you loosen that pinion up. It also needs to be torqued back down correctly. Personally I would not drive it till the mech looks it over, you might screw the gears. Thats what happened to my ZJ but I knew it was bad when I bought it, rebuilt the entire rear w/new gears and a locker. Many mechanics really need to stay away from differentials, it's one of those black arts like unix and cisco routers...

need help!!! I replaced Ring & pinion seal yesterday and now

Yesterday I had the Ring and Pinion seal replaced and now unless I am crazy the rear end seems to have some minor vibration when going over 70 mph. This vibration I don't think was there before having the seal replaced!
I do not know what goes into replacing the seal. So, I do not know what could be causing this...please help! I am by no means a mechanic! & I do not want to blame my mechanic for some thing stupid! I just want to know what the issue might be.
