termite The best offroad gps app I have used is MotionX gps. Last I checked it was apple only, but you could get a used Iphone, maybe an Ipad, but that would be pretty big.

XMRacer The big was kinda what I was thinking. But can't find an off-road app.
I have a Garmin nuvi 7xx, but the maps are out of date. So was kicking around whether buying the new TOPO maps was worth it or is there some thing better/easier. If there was a good off-road smartphone app, that would be perfect as it's one less thing to bounce around. But seems Garmin doesn't do Topo on their apps. So the tablet idea is out unless there is an off-road app that I'm not finding.

Garmin makes a model that is called the "Montana" it is about the size of a Iphone/android phone. I have an eTrex HCx and while the screen is small, it is big enough to navigate with when on the dash. Sure you will not be reading the numbers on the elevation lines, but you could follow a trail. Also it has pretty good "turn by turn" road features for use in a pinch. I've used mine on occasion when renting cars.
If you need "big" you can always buy an inexpensive tablet and pick up one the many gps apps that are floating around.

XMRacer Thanks for the input, but was looking for something a little bigger that I could see while I'm driving.

If you can find that with the topo's it works well.
another choice is the etrex20 or the etrex30

They are great for mapping trails and back tracking.
I love mine

good luck there are so many to choose from it is crazy!

Off Road GPS

Without going to LORAN what's your go to GPS device?
I have an older Garmin nuvi that I am thinking of replacing. I only use the Nuvi for off road, so I can see trail options like forks or other trails in the area that I might not have known about or tried. On road I have my smart phone hooked up to the radio so I can hear it with the top off
So is there a good off road app or do I just upgrade my Garmin and buy the new topo maps?
