|Duma||I found them at the local Ace hardware. Like $3 each. I assume Sears, Lowes etc would carry them too?|

|Tommy2Times||They look great! I was trying some ideas yesterday. I don't have a garage so a "frame" will have to be built outside. Just to lift on and off. Wouldn't store it hanging anywhere.|

I made one from an old GM roof rack. Bought pulleys, rope, 3 hooks and a tie-down from the local hardware store. I basically copied the design from the ones sold online. Had the roof rack, spent $58 total. The pulleys are both doubles so plenty of leverage. Works great.

i made two....
the LJ hard top weighs around 200 lbs....IIRC. i had originally thought ~250, but now i think thats a bit high...i think the SWB TJ hard top is ~160 lbs?
my first hard top hoist was actually my first welding project. used some schedule 40 pipe and made a big H-pattern. straps the hard top to it, and lift the top into the ceiling with a HF 440/800lb electric hoist. i could install/remove the top by myself with this...but a helper to guide the swinging top was almost a necessity for my tiny single car garage.
second one i made is just some tie-down straps & heavy duty hooks drilled into the rafters. i moved into a different place, with a finished garage and the neighbor's bedroom upstairs, so i couldn't utilize the rafters to mount the hoist.... now I need a helper...we take the top off by hand, lay it on some 2x4's, and then slowly lift it up inch by inch with tie-downs. it works.

Nice. So you unblot the top ,slide the boards under and pull it up?
I need to make something I can do My LJ top by myself. Anyone know how much an LJ hardtop weighs?

hard top lifting device. made your own?
Has anyone made their own device to lift of their hardtop? I want to take mine on and off and not use my soft top this summer because of my new living location. Seems pretty simple. Anyone?
