why is my jeep vibrating when i approach 50 mph?

I have a 97, 4 cylinder, wrangler with a 112,000 miles on it. It is our first jeep, and my daughters and I truly love it for it's rugged simplicity.
Lately when we appraoch 50mph, the jeep begins to vibrate. We really feel it in the cab. It gets so bad that at times I feel like it is going to die on me. One interesting fact: this morning before I left for work, I switched to four wheel drive. As result, the the ride to work was a lot smoother, as the vibrating was redeuced.
What is going on with my jeep?
