wrestler22115 Was wondering if you have any pictures of your bracket support that is on the tub? And you said you had to drop the tank? does that mean i got to take my bumper off. It was a pain in the butt to get that on.

use strong washers. I used an impact that I torqued down too hard on one bolt; it squished in a bit but barely noticeable. Just be careful.

kjg26 Any issue with the tailgate itself collapsing...seeing as its hollow?

2ManyHobbies Almost done...only getting one day a week to work on it but oh well. I figured before painting I would update some things.

The 2.5" bolts through the tailgate is too long so I am going to switch to 2". For the part of the hinge that goes through the body I ended up using 4" full thread bolts to reach all the way through. For the bolts holding the cables inside the wrangler, I used 2.5" 1/2" grade 8 bolts with around 10 washers to pack it out. On the inside of the 1/2" bolts I used two pieces of 1/8" steel plate on top of each other for strength. Im going to add a slam latch for the top right of the tailgate so it sits flush. All in all this was an easy and fun mod. Thanks H2.

Thanks for the reply. I was figuring on dropping that tank...good to know I only have to loosen it. I'll be sure to post pics when I get going on that project.

Yes you dont have to fully drop the tank but you do have to loosen it and completely undo the rear side to slide your backing plates in.

cavediverjc Over the past month I've gathered all the parts required to do the fold-down gate conversion to my YJ. I've got everything to do the job now and was wondering if those of you who've already done it had to drop their gas tank to get to the backside of that panel underneath the gate. It looks like I'm going to have to go that route. Just wondering if any of you had any tricks that I should be aware of to make this mod go smoother. I'm looking at doing the conversion in a couple weeks.

my rig's a TJ, but I did basically the same conversion (minor difference except I only put one cable on tho) and I have no rattle or hardtop problems. It has no issues holding my 210lbs and more.

Cable might be same length as a Dodge, but I used a 95-2002 GMC 1500/Silverado cable, got it at AutoZone for about $7. Advance Auto had the same exact brand for $15.

Overall I am glad I did the conversion, but since I have no back seat sometimes the cargo slips all the way forwards and I have to climb in to get it. Sounds nitpicky I know but I imagine the more beat up and less flexible I get the more it will happen.

Other than that I can't think of any negatives.

Ive been using just the factory latch on the left side an it is rock solid. I may add some type of gate latch if i get bored but my tire carrier kinda gets in the way. But surprisingly no rattle on the street or wheeling.

95YamJam Great job. I've been looking into this my self since i bent my tail gate i got a junk yard one. I think i am gonna also make a back lit oldschool cj "jeep" plate for the back of the gate to cover the old tire carrier holes.

One thing I might try too is to use the old door hinge locations on the tub to hold my spare tire. I also want to make it pin removeable for trailing. I don't need the spare off road really it can just stay with my tow rig. Plus it makes the back end flat.

I actually bent my gate becuse the tire was on there and the tire hits stuff before my bumper.

YJkiddo Heck yeah man thanks very much, i can't get his mod off my mind! I just thought, maybe a third drop line instead of just two, but that doesn't really help for hinge strength

H2_recoveryteam Yes i used some flush mount bolts and on the backside of the tub i cut about 3-4 inch sections of that 1/8 thick 3ft long section of steel i got At home depot. And dilled holes and painted it black. You have to put something there for a backing plate for strength. The sheet metal in the tub is very thin.

No rattle at all. But for the hardtop i dont have one so its hard to say. I wouldnt see why not tho because the only real factor that changed was how it opens. Not the location or anything.

Thanks. And as for the plate i bought a 3 ft length of it at home depot for i believe $10. And the dodge cables, autozone had some right off the shelf. I think they were 97-up.

H2_recoveryteam It holds me an my gf no problem. So prob about 300 LBS. Makes a great spot to eat lunch on the trail now.

Well if you can convince yourself to drill into new stuff. Honestly the armor on the gate and the valance will just make it stronger. The sheet metal is fairly thin everywhere the armor will just add strength.
