|keetz02||HAHAHAHA!!! I have installed the switches in the Jeep and gained 3 levels of speed back, and my ability to select AC/heat/vent/defrost. For some reason the med-hi doesn't work... anyone have any ideas??? maybe its time to replace the blower motor/blower motor resistor??? Thanks everyone for the help, really appreciated the call by distortedtj on the switch problem, saved me a few hundred $$ I am sure.|

yep, there was a little meltage going on there, not too much but there was some at the base of one of the tab plugs, enough that it looked raised a bit. Going to order one from the stealership tomorrow and install on Tuesday (called yesterday for a quote on the piece and they said they didn't have any in stock).
In a seperate issue; I unhooked the back of the dial that controls the settings (A/C, Heat, Defrost) and I don't think I got it back together properly as the dial now moves without resistance (took the thing totally apart), I have a ball bearing from inside it (I am assuming that is where the ball bearing came from anyway), not sure where the ball bearing goes, but it was sitting on my carpet (didn't notice it until I had put everything back together).. any idea where this thing goes?? also when I unplugged it I heard a hissing sound coming out of the wires it was hooked up to, that stopped after a moment, any clue as to what that was?? I have a feeling I just made things much worse, on the plus my defrost still functions...

|keetz02||this is probably going to be a stupid question, which knob is the switch they had to replace behind? the one that controls the move from AC to vent to defogger? or the one that controls the lo-med-med.hi-hi? basically the one on the left or the one on the far right (when seated in the driver seat)? Thanks for the link, I am sure that it will be invaluable if/when I do this myself... how easy is it to do this by yourself?|

i think i mite have a answer for you...melted wire going to the back of the heater controls
pull the center dash bezel off and pull the heater/ac controls out.. it's easy. and here is a link to a past thread...

I'd rather have the defroster work and stay dry...
Back to the original problem, after some lengthy online reading I found this site that contains complaints/recalls on 2000 Jeep Wranglers;
seems like the problem I am having is becoming an issue for a lot of people... but atleast with the help I got here and what I found on that site I know what's going on! Thanks again everyone. Will be back to this site OFTEN!!!

|keetz02||hahaha, yeah that is why I cut my errands short this morning, it started sprinkling so I headed home to avoid not being able to see when the windshield fogged up... Atleast the inside of my Jeep doesn't smell like burnt plastic anymore... As for the hi setting not working, that failed about a year ago, just didn't care enough to do anything about it, figured the knob slot was out of alignment or something.. Thanks a lot for the info, will be well armed when I take it in for repairs!|

99% sure its just slow dieing. thats based off everything you described. same senario happend to me.
It sucks to not have the blower motor in heavy rain and you cant defog the windows....

|keetz02||Well, good news and not so good news... I went to turn the A/C on to see if it still produced the plastic burning smell this morning, it did not, neither did the vent setting, that's the good news.. The bad news, I now only have the 2 lowest settings on the vent (low-med low.... no more med high or high). So I think its probably safe to say its the fan motor... or could that indicate some other problem????|

I have had the same smell but it only happend twice
once I was on the trail and once right as I turned in the driveway
both times I had my ac on

|keetz02||honestly, until I got on here I was somewhat worried about an electrical fire, or a short while I was driving somewhere!!! Anyone have any idea what this sort of thing would cost to get fixed? not sure I want to try to do this one on my own... have seen a low price of $70 to a high price of $140 for the blower motor, have no idea what the man hours cost would be though. Thanks again, this is a big relief for me!!|

|XNeoJesterX||no problem. based off what you said with the fluctuating I'm pretty sure it is. I freaked out when my old car was doing that cause i first thought there was a bad wire or something and it was gonna start an electrical fire or something and burn my garage down so i kept unhooking the battery after i pulled into my garage. haha. I was just being paranoid tho. it was the fan/motor unit for the AC/Heater dieing.|

|XNeoJesterX||I had that in my old supra once. There was a burning plastic smell coming through the vents one night. Then the next day the Heater/AC stopped blowing. It was the motor/fans going out.|

Burning plastic smell from vents!
Hey all, I recently noticed a burning plastic smell coming from the vents in my 2000 Wrangler , anyone else had this issue or have any idea what it could be? Checked for plastic bag under the Jeep, none there, looked around the engine and didn't see any burning/melted wires, I am at a loss!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
