He did ask for an opinion in general (given the miles on his prospective Jeep), and since he had not consumated the deal, perhaps he would choose to reconsider if the general opinion was that he could do better.
If someone decides to jump off a bridge, I would try to stop him (or at least ask him to reconsider) rather than wish him good luck on the pending trip.
As for buying out of one's area, depends how much a few thousand dollars means, or possibly fighting with rusted fasteners and sheetmetal for the duration of ownership. I don't know where he is located, so maybe he already lives in a rust-free area.
I traveled 1500-2000 miles several times to buy vehicles when I lived in New England and Alaska and it was worth every penny during years of ownership and at resale time to me at least.
The joy at purchase can turn into buyer's remorse if problems turn up due to mileage wear, physical condition, or realization of reduced resale value.
I guess I'd want someone to tell me the "truth" as they saw it if they had experience I didn't, but then again, maybe other people wouldn't.
Personally, tell me how to AVOID a broken leg while skiing rather than how to put a splint on it later (because the instructional information was withheld) and I'd be a happy camper.
Maybe that's just me, but then I hate pain.

I agree, I got mine, 97 Wrangler Sahara Manual trans for 6,000 with 130,000 mile if I remember correctly. I live in NY and for some odd reason Jeeps up here somwhat keep their value.
If I was in a similar position would I do the same thing? I really don't know, And I will openly admit that even I had buyers remorse after I paid what I paid for mine. That lasted till the first time I took the top off and went for a ride
What I am saying is the advise here is good, but depending on the situation and how bad your "just have to have it right friggin now syndorme" is kicking in you will be the one spending the money and driving your new Jeep. None of us will.

|my98tj||i bought my 98 more than two years ago with 135,000 for $8300. it now has almost 180,000 and it still runs like a champ. the only thing i need to work on is my rear end. it's starting to make a little noise. sounds like bearings, but honestly it has 180k on it so i expect it. congrats on the the new jeep bro. you'll love it.|

I think it depends on where you live. You could get that for a TJ here, without trying too hard. You just can't find 'em in good shape. aking a trip out to the desert to shop for a Jeep just wouldn't be worth the money saved.

Sorry, but you asked.
That is WAY too much for a '97 with those miles IMHO.
One can buy '97s with 80-100k all day in Dallas for less than that.
I recently bought my 2000 Sport w/ 80K highway miles and hard doors for $8800 a couple months ago and it didn't have a scratch, dent or even a scratch or touch of surface rust underneath (including the exhaust system).
I turned down several 2000-2001 models with less mileage for $10-11k simply because I set $10,000 for a like-new, finished Jeep (new top, including ANY reconditioning I needed/wanted to do) for $10k, and I figured even a nice $10k Jeep would need something.
I DID buy a new top for it for $227 (Smittybilt Outland top), but that still put it at $9000 total.
I didn't look where you live, but find a rust free one from the desert southwest or California, and you can always do a quicky refresh (valve job, rings and main bearings) for WELL under $500 in parts.
You need to "buy right" because even w/ a new engine, a Jeep with that many miles has very low resale value, even though it may still have many miles left in it.
BTW, YES a 4.0 should go an easy 160,000mi, but at 150K I would at least think about the ring and valve job I mentioned.
My dad always said, "Buy in haste, repent at leisure." I probably wouldn't consumate the deal, but it IS your money.

It all depends on where you are. I would say that here in Phoenix you could find a 97 cheaper than that with less miles. But in other places where they aren't as plentiful then that might not be the case.
Congrats on your purchase. If it's in your wheel house and you want it, then right on.

|WranglerHawg||I was going to say the same thing, i bought my 01 Sport with 68,000 miles on it for 11,000. And i've seen them down here in florida for 7 grand with that many miles. But hey, if thats all you can find...GO FOR IT. Congrats on the new jeep man.|

|Wr@ngler00||First i must say congrats on the jeep. Second i must be critical of your purchase. I think you might have payed too much for you jeep. It's a 97 with 133,000 miles and you payed 9K for it right? Hope i got that right. Thats a little much. I payed 11,500 for a 2000 sport with 66K miles on it. The total was 12,500 with a 2 year bumper to bumper warrenty from carmax. This is just something to think about before you go and pick up your new toy. Good luck|

|CRT||Thanks for the reply. Paid $8900.00 from a local place that all they deal in are jeeps sales,service,accessories,etc.Best price around that I could find even from privite owners. Didnt want to finance much at all. So I could put on accessories.|

I personally wouldn;t be very concerned about the high mileage. It probably has a lot of life left. Probably wouldn't hurt to have a mechanic give it a once-over...
As long as you are paying a good price, sounds like a good buy. It's hard to find a high mileage jeep that hasn;t been driven into the ground.

|CRT||I am completely new to jeeps and dont know much about them. It is a 97 sport with a manual it had a hard top, putting on a soft top. I dont think top has ever been off carpet and seats dont have first spot on them . factory tires putting on 31 inch tires on factory rims. I think there all highway miles.|

Tell us a little more about the Jeep. Year, tranny, any mods, how the jeep has been used, etc.
There is no reason to think the jeep wouldn't hold up, if it has been cared for.

Average miles out off 4.0 liter?
Getting new (used) TJ with 133,000 miles on it. I have been told that the 4.0 will get 200,000 easy but will everything else on it? the jeep looks like new shape. What do I need to expect?
