That's funny. There was one kid (dressed all in camouflage) that was ready to enlist that day. If the Army was enlisting that young, they'd have a new recruit already! They were a great bunch of kids. I wish I'd done it on my other deployments....but it's something to keep in mind for my future deployments (God willing).

That pic is the first time I've shaved and put on a real uniform in a good while. I almost never had to shave overseas, let alone put on an Army uniform....usually I was dressed in a man-dress, full beard, and did the whole "incognito" routine. Felt kinda good to get back in uniform and play the part!

RatherBNarizona thats awesome
I had a "buddy" a couple years ago, right after 9-11
I sent him a bunch of stuff, not just letters. The last I heard from him was that he was on his last month and he was coming back to the states.
I hope I gave him a little happiness or hope

cavediverjc Yeah, it was a great experience for me as well. It was good to talk about life over family (parents/sister) won't ask details about what I do (they know I'm a sniper) because they know I can't answer most questions, and they don't want to know about the questions I CAN answer. These kids made a great sounding board for me. They had tons of questions......some I couldn't answer, and some I could. In the end, I think it was nice for them to get up to speed on life in a combat zone, and it was therapeutic for me as well.....

erickpl Congrats to you. Great thing to do. They see ya as a name/address, but to put your face and see them in person was probably a pretty cool thing for them to do.

Kudos to YOU!

American Flag

Here's the flag I presented to the 5th grade class at Beloit Elementary School in Beloit, KS. I gave it to them on Friday, May 2. I flew this flag for them at my camp in Afghanistan, and they were pretty excited to get it Friday. They had adopted me as their "Man In Afghanistan" and sent me care packages with cards of appreciation (that the rest of my team loved!) Anyways, I was able to leave early from the medical unit I'm in at Fort Riley, KS to present the class their flag before they went home for the day. It's funny.....I'm not scared of being blown up or shot (both have happened so far.....), but I was scared to death to go in front of a 5th grade class. Weird. It only lasted for about 3 seconds after I entered the room, after that it was cake. Had a good time. I can't believe the questions they were asking. I don't remember being that involved with world news as a 5th grader as they were. I think there might just be a chance for our future with these kids!!
