drummermike58 awesome, just the answer I wanted The Lockright has not been installed yet, it just comes with the jeep. I dont have pics but i will see it in person tomorrow. I will look out for the synchro issue with the bigger tires on the weaker tranny. I am fairly certain that the lift is a suspension lift. but, I'm very mechanically inclined, so any repairs are not really an issue, plus I have access to the auto hobby shop on base. All in all I think its all worth it. The asking price is $1500 so i don't think that $1200 would be a hard number to reach. The guy who has it, got it from a customer he did some work for as a contractor, and is looking to sell it quickly admitting that he needs money fairly soon. Overall even at $1500 it sounds like an ok buy. Ideally I would swap out the motor and tranny for something else later, but for now it would be an around town car for her when I am at work or my car isnt available.

I am not unfamiliar with motor swaps either (just not wranglers), the whole process though would be a fun project for she and I to do anyhow, so as a commuter until a real off road build occurs i think the 4cyl would suit her fine.

jpdocdave this is true. how come you didn't take that advice

yjwrangler once you pay a shop to rebuild the tranny ( with all those miles and those big tires it will need it) and get the engine running ....decent; you will have already paid the price for the better jeep.

i can agree on 1200 bux, but unfortunately if it runs, and is clean they have a hi resale. i had to pay a grand to finally buy one with a good body and bad engine to completely dismantle. if its the right wrangler, people will pay. i agree about engine, you'd be happier finding a 4.0

crafty Where you live will affect the price you pay. Do you know what happened to the original engine? If it is in need of a tune up it should have a dirty airfilter in it. A little bit of oil on it can be considered normal blow by. Be leary if that is the only thing that has been changed or if it has alot of oil on it. Make sure it is shifting smoothly, especially 3rd gear. Sign of bad sychros and 3rd gear is usually the first to send a warning sign. A 4.0 6 cyl is the more desirable engine.

jpdocdave hey and welcome, man there's a lot of variables here. suspension or body lift? sounds like it needs some work, and with a lift and lockight i'm sure it will. 176 is a lot of miles for the ax 5 trans w/ big tires. can you post pics?

would you do tune up and battery yourself? an average shop would charge around 3 to 4 hundred bux for that. and it might need a new top which isn't cheap.

but if its in good shape otherwise, and you guys like it then go for it.

way to hard to give a price without a lot more info. but if you like i'd say i wouldn't pay more than 3 to 3500 if its in good shape otherwise

buying wrangler what to look for???

Hey everyone, I am going to go check out a 1990 wrangler 4cyl tomorrow. 80k on motor, 176k on everything else. Listed says it need tune up/battery/top repair (cosmetic not structural). Has 2" lift, 32" BFG brand new, and comes with a lockright for front axle. He did however say that it runs well enough to drive. What is a good price for this jeep? I want to hear what it would be worth to people who know jeeps, as well as things to be mindful of when checking out its condition. The guy says no rust anywhere, and interior is in good shape. The coolest part about this whole thing is that I am getting it for my Fiance, she has wanted a wrangler forever and said she would learn to drive a manual to get it . Now I have a hobby that we can both get into since she is terrified of the motorcycle. Any info would be great and thanks for readin'.
