|khenderson||i get 18-20 depending on whether i'm mostly city or highway. i am very light on the skinny pedal(never accelerating hard and running 60 on the highway). i run 30x9.50's with 4.10's. other than that, the only thing i've done to it is a k&n drop in filter. me likey the 18mpg with gas prices at 2.45/gal.|

|97texasTJ||how in the hell do yall get such good gas mileage with a 2.5L? what gears yall runnin? my jeep is now under the knife and before with stock gears (4.11's) and runnin 32's i was gettin like 13 miles to a gallon!!!! thats rediculous...im about to have the 4.88's in there will that help out at all?|

awwww...i've said that to my 4-banger many a time rolling uphill on the highway. petting the dash just in case it's a confidence problem.

|Rocjeeper||In stock form, there is NO substitute for for cubic liter displacement. With that said, 4cyl and 4.88 gears and 33" tires is a great combination. I own 2 with 4cyl and one with 6cyl., If 33" tires are your final goal eather work well. If you get the 4cyl and opt for gear change please go straight for the 4.88s, you only want to pay for a regearing once. 4cyl + man trans + 4.88 + 31" Boggers = burn out, quality type, torque. Trust me.|

I actually understand where he's coming from. If somebody said my Jeep had the engine that was the biggest mistake ever, I'd be angry. However, that could have been handled differently. Anyway, no reason to dwell on that. It's over and forgotten.
I've driven the 2.5 and I think it does alright. It does have a little pep. You're not going to win any races, but who cares about that. You're in a JEEP. The coolest vehicle on the planet. Nobody can see you when you just go zipping along.

the 2.5 and the 4.0 are brothers- one just has 2 less angry squirls in the cage.
in my experience, the 4.0 gets better gas mileage if treated with respect- both are long lived engines, but the 4.0 lasts longer BECAUSE you ask less of it. The 2.5 can be prodded, souped up, accessorized, ect-and become a redline screamer...right up to about where the 4.0 starts.
advantage->4.0 :said advantage is my opinion only though-thats the way it has to be. If I came out and called the 2.5 crap, I`d be wrong. Their good engines, they just dont have the true longivity and power that a 4.0 has.
Ive never really met in person anyone whos driven both, and been happy with the 2.5- but Ive met many 2.5 owners that have never driven a 4.0 who will stand on the tallest hill, and proclaim their engine rocks! Its the bestest eveah! and they would never own anything else!
More power to them- its their choice. I choose 4.0 or larger, and I`ll put my 230,000 mile 4.0 against any 2.5 that thinks it can ....thinks it can...thinks it can.

|jeeperman||After owning both the 4 and the 6, there are definite advantages to owning the 4.0L. I actually found that my 4.0L got BETTER gas milage than the 2.5L, but that could have had something to do with the age of the motors more than anything. I think that if you can afford the extra $$$, then the 4.0L is a superior engine in ALMOST any situation. There are conditions (city driving, mild trail riding) where the 2.5L is AS GOOD AS the 4.0L, but I can't think of a situation where it is better in terms of off road performance. So really it comes down to the same thing that almost every Jeep decision is based on... MONEY! Good luck with your Jeep search, and keep us updated (we all like watching other people spend money, and are more than willing to help them do it!!!! ).|

|legacy||yea, i have the 4.0 6cyl, and i love it! i don't think i will ever be able to own a 4 banger. gas is a bitch but if thats the worst problem, screw it, i'll take it!|

Whatever route you go - both result in owning a JEEP! and that's all that matters. The 2.5L is slow, but I get 20mpg highway, and it's lighter weight can help in "puckery" situations. They work fine on anything that doesn't require monster torque such as mud or sand (though they definitely still work on the sand, you just have to give em a run for their money). The 4.0 is easier to cruise around on when it comes to highways, and things with "sticky" traction. Their mileage is slighly worse than the 2.5l - this difference is enhanced further in 4lo.
Make your decision based on what you need.

|khenderson||like just about everything regarding jeeps, its about what you are going to do with it. if you have alot of highway driving, the 4cyl probly isn't gonna be a good way to go, but if you just drive mostly city, with trails that aren't too bad like me, then the 4cyl is a good little motor. i love my 4-banger, but i would like to have the extra umph of a 4.0.|

inline 6 vs. 4 banger
I'm still in the market for my latest and greatest TJ, and i've found one that looks like it's damn near perfect however it has a 4 cyclinder engine in it. I've only driven the inline 6 and i've heard that the 4 bangers have "no go" in them. Any input would be appreciated!
