I've still yet to get out there and check for leaks and bleed them. Got busy and then yesterday was poring down buckets of rain, wouldn't be able to see leaks anyway. Today maybe.

I have all new brakes, calipers, pads, cylinders, shoes, lines and master cylinder.
They didn't really act right til i got a nerw master cylinder. I took it apart and the seals where gone in it just forcing the brake fluid back intot he cylinder when I would brake.
My brakes are as good as they have ever been but not the best i've ever had. The pedal is stiff once pushed down about an inch but it starts engaging right away. Mine does not pull at all. 40 mph hard stop with no hands on the wheel.
I usually use the trans to stop and slow more than anything. Even in an emergancy stop I have already downshifted and cluthed out.

|denisbaldwin||Sounds like my brakes too. Squishy, then responsive, squishy, then squeeky... drives me crazy.|

|87yjmpi||Replaced it all on my 87. The hard lines were starting to go.|

|Xpress||They should work at random, pulling hard left forcing you to compensate by turning right. At least that's what I've been told and my experiences|

The rest of you make it sound like YJ brakes should be roughly like what I'm used to so these sound pretty well hosed. I'll be doing a full physical check on them today.

|natax||My brakes aren't stiff, but not soft. Though with 33s I don't expect to stop on a dime, though I can stop relatively quick, when needed. (Damn lights that change at the last second and make me slam on my brakes)|

|joedob||My yj brakes are very responsive and barely need to touch the pedal. I agree that you need to check fluids and parts and bleed lines.|

Are you replacing brake lines because they are rusty or leaking or because someone said you should?
Take it one step at a time since you just bought it. Check the master cylinder to make sure you have fluid, pull all the wheels and check that the pads and shoes are OK and the front pistons and rear wheel cylinders aren't leaking.

|crosma||Thanks, I have new brake lines coming as suggested by another person since they are stock lines in an 89' . I think I'll still bleed them tomorrow anyway.|

|Drix||Sounds like you need to bleed the lines.|

How should YJ brakes feel?
Bought my first jeep yesterday and the brakes are taking some getting used to. I'm used to brakes that firm up and then you just push harder for more braking force. My YJ brakes go smoothly to the floor with almost no resistance but at about half way down the brakes start to work, at an inch or so from the floor they are at full force and pretty much lock up.
Is this normal or should I be replacing something?
