I have the 4.0. The shop knows they have to drop the pan and exhaust, no surprises there. The guy just bundled them together for whatever reason to save me a few bucks. Im not complaining there.
This shop does nothing but Jeeps and is supposed to be really good where I live, but with all shops that specialize in mostly one vehicle their prices can some times be WAY out of line. I paid $100 once to get an O2 bung TIG welded into a Subaru downpipe at a Subaru specific shop. It took the guy most of an hour(I watched him so I know the time it took) and he did an awesome job, but holy crap it was WAY more than I thought it should have cost and didnt realize his labor costs were $90 an hour. My buddy(who does body work) said he would have done it for like $20.
That was my only real purpose with this thread was to see if things were WAY out of whack, like double what they should cost. I know the Jeep dealer I talked to wanted $500 just to do the RMS(which is WAY out of line IMO) so I figure $650 to do the RMS and clutch a decent deal.
I still think I am going to have them do the pinion seals because $125 to me doesnt sound bad to do both of them and I know they will do them right. The guy said they torque and check pre-load with the inch lb torque wrench the way the shop manual says to do it. They dont just torque to a spec or mark the bolt. So I am sure the way they do it takes a little time.
But I do think the u-joints is a little crazy at $50 per u-joint basically and those take 5 minutes and are pretty hard to screw up from the couple write ups I have seen.

|freeskier||Yep, if you have the 4 cylinder engine then wrapping the RMS into the clutch is good. If you have the 4.0L though I would be weary that they are going to try to charge you more once they realize it's a two piece that requires dropping the exhaust and oil pan to replace.|

anytime a shop lets me bring in my own parts for savings wise or quality of parts wise they get a + in my book.
RMS and clutch require the tranny to come out, which can be labor intensive, not undoable, but tranny jack, enough jack stands to get the jeep up in the air, tools, etx add up, and some times those things are nice to have a warranty on.
I'd tackle the u joints and pinion seals myself, you'll save the labor and they are not hard to do. Are you talking the drive shaft ujoints or front axle u joints? if its the driveshafts I'd do the front driveshaft and pinion first...if you get stuck you can always drive it with the front DS out and take it to them to fix/finish up...its a good gauge on whether you can handle the rears.

I think I am going to have them do the RMS, the clutch, and the F&R pinion seals and I will do the u-joints myself. Talked to a buddy and he has a u-joint press from Harbor Freight and we can do them ourselves. He said $200(plus another $100 in parts) was a bit crazy for something we could do in literally an hour total and save the $200(well he is going to charge me a handle of Jim Beam so really a $180 savings).

Labor quote check???
Need to get the following done to my jeep:
rear main seal
all u joints in drive shaft replaced
f&r pinion seals changed
Here is what I was quoted labor wise to do each:
clutch and rear main seal-$650
F&R pinion seals-$125(includes doing a fluid change)
The guy said they really dont up charge on their parts to much if people are getting them installed so he said he could order it all for me or I could bring it in. He quoted me the prices and they were about what I could order the stuff for. Probably just order it all myself. Bringing my own fluids in for sure though.
Do the above numbers look out of line or about right? I think I could probably do the u-joints, pinion seals and rear main myself, but I dont really have the ability to drop the trans to do the clutch. The guy combined the clutch and rear main because he said once they get the trans out the rear main is a piece of cake and he would package them together. The other prices didnt seem to bad except maybe the U-joints so I may just do those myself.
