Send it to these guys and they will rebuild it. Long block ( complete engine minus covers and accessories) is what you would want. They have my short block there right now. I have dealt with this place multiple times and never had an issue. They have been in business since 43, a BBB member since 57 and a A+ rating.

The very 1st engine is what you need, as of last week, they did not have one in stock, but would rebuild yours with a 2 week turnaround. If they rebuild yours, there is no core charge.
By the time you factor in parts, cleaning stuff, and machine work, you'll be hard pressed to build one yourself for this price. I have built many engines, but by the time it is all said and done, I would save about 50 bucks doing it myself. My time is worth more than 50 bucks.

|Buz 1||pull the plugs & pour 2-3 tbs of marvel mystery oil into each cylinder & let soak 3-7 days.. new t-chain & sprockets(as mentioned), & re-torque head (as mentioned).. install, & enjoy...|

|wiseguy52||The gas in my Jeep is new, the 3 year old gas is in the rotted jeep that I am purchasing the engine from. I am considering the rebuild while the engine is not in a vehicle.|

|Shoe||If the gas is 3 years old, I would drop the tank and drain all of it out. Old gas can do bad things to an engine.|

Pull the pan and valve cover, clean them out and look close at all you can see. Check crank thrust. Replace oil pump and clean pickup tube screen. Replace cam drive sprockets and chain. Replace freeze plugs. Flush cooling system like crazy. Replace rear main seal. Consider pulling a main cap and rod cap to check bearing condition.
Check torque on head bolts and all rods and main cap bolts-don't do breakaway, just check up to torque spec. Replace water pump and tstat.....stuff it in

blind squirrel found a nut
So I have been looking into replacing the 2.5 in my 98TJ for some time now. I was contemplating upgrading to at least the I6 if not a V8, but was concerned about all the extra work and cost involved.
I happened to find, and purchase a 2.5L for a very fair price recently The engine has around 80K miles on it and has been sitting for a few years. As of yesterday, the engine ran. I was told it was running rough, but considering it had not run since parked about 3 years ago, I am not all that concerned. I should mention it still has the gas in it from 3 years ago as well.
I plan to look at the seals, replace plugs, probably put gas treatment in the tank before starting, and anything else obvious before putting it in my jeep. Is there anything else that you would do prior to putting the engine in the jeep? Thought about rebuilding it, but I am unsure of that.
