This was probably about 10 or 12 years ago. A friends dad had a house about and hour or so north of where I live, and this friend and I were visiting him and looking for some trails to explore. He already told us about some of the places he liked to take his Jeep, but also told us that he'd recently been ticketed for having an open container in protected marshland, so we decided it would be best to NOT follow his advice. We were just wandering around the area when this friend told me to take a turn down a residential street because he remembered something from when he was a kid riding his bike around. I took the turn he pointed out and followed the street to a dead-end. "OK, now what?" He told me to go around the guardrail, there was a hidden trail. He was right, so I went down it. I don't remember exactly how long it was, but it was definitely under 2 miles to where it ended at a ruined garage. There was nothing left but the foundation of the building, and the burned out shells of a couple of old cars that were inside. Couldn't even make out what kind of cars they were, they were so badly damaged. I'm guessing something from the late 50's to early 60's but they were badly warped and the roofs of both were flattened. We went back a few times after that, mostly to show it to other friends when we were all out there. No idea why there was a lone garage in the woods with no actual road leading to it, just assumed there was a road at one time that was just overgrown, and that the neighborhood was built much later.
Years later, the friends father passed away. I went with him and his brother to help empty the house before it was sold. While we were there, we went looking for that same trail again. We went down the dead-end street, I turned around the guardrail and started toward the trail when the friend stopped me. There was a guy running from the last house on the street yelling at us to stop. He looked pretty pissed as he waved his arms screaming at us. I turned around and went back to where he was. Turns out, the area was no longer public land, he'd bought it a few years earlier. He was totally cool once he saw that we honestly didn't know it was now private land and apologized. We talked for a few minutes, he hadn't seen the garage himself, but knew about it from all of the other people trying to get back there to see it. He said that after talking to the 2of us, he wouldn't have a problem with US going back there since WE were friendly enough and that he didn't think we'd damage his property. But he warned us that an F-250 tried going back a while ago and it was a major operation getting it back out once it got stuck. I thought about pointing out that I wasn't driving an F-250, I was driving a JEEP, but decided to hold my tongue. We didn't take the trail, I could see that he didn't really want us wheeling on his land, but was only offering to be friendly.

strange experience while four wheelin'
This was not so much what we saw but what we experienced on a trail.
One day my wife, Carol, and I were enjoying our Jeep (then a Cherokee) in an area we had never been, exploring vistas where there were hills and valleys with no specific trail to follow. When four wheeling everyone knows that whenever one climbs a hill and reaches the crest there is a point where forward visibility is limited as the vehicle is angled, or pointing upwards, and the view of the trail/terrain through the windshield is obscured by the front of the vehicle. At the crest of such hills the trail/terrain will typically continue uphill, level off to a plateau, or begin a downhill decent. For some time during this outing we had gone over hills where visibility at the crest had been limited. In each case we had continued over these crests and safely maintained our course as we made our way across this hilly terrain.
During one such climb we had almost made it to the crest when I had this feeling that we should stop. I stomped on the brakes and brought the Jeep to a sudden halt. Carol looked over at me somewhat bewildered and asked why we had stopped. I told her that I was not sure why but I wanted to get out and have a look prior to our proceeding. I climbed out of the Jeep and made my uphill climb to the front of the vehicle. As I assessed our situation, I discovered that the front passenger tire was stopped only inches away from a cliff that was at least twenty feet down. This cliff had been hidden from our view. Had we continued we would have without doubt ended up at the bottom of this deep ravine. Had we done so there would have been extensive damage to the vehicle and almost assuredly great bodily harm to ourselves as well.

Has a skull, NOT a ghost story but interesting.....
OK, this did not happen on the trail ....but on the way to one.
Many years ago my wife and I were on the freeway. As we were traveling along there was a truck directly in front of us in the process of changing lanes. I happen to notice that in time with his turn signal there was a corresponding eye being illuminated in a skull attached to the truck’s hitch that would also illuminate. This experience happened some time ago and at the time was quite unique so I wanted to share the observation with my wife. I followed the truck in it’s lane change and asked my wife if she saw the skull on the back of the truck to which she stated she did. I explained that it’s eyes would illuminate whenever the turn signal or brakes were activated on the truck.
We both began to watch for the eyes to illuminate. A short time later the truck began to slow for traffic and both eyes illuminated. I pointed out that the eyes had illuminated as the brakes were applied. She stated that she was watching and saw no such illumination. Realizing that she probably just missed it we both continued watching. A short time later the truck made a lane change. I quickly pointed out the illuminated eye while it was still in action but she saw no such illumination. I again explained how the lights would illuminate in the eye sockets and could be clearly seen whenever the brakes or turn signals were activated and could not understand why she did not see them. We both continued to watch. A short time later the truck made yet another lane change. Again, I clearly saw the eye light up but she did not. Wondering how she could possibly not see what I had clearly observed, we continued to watch the pickup, still in front of us, as it once more began to brake for traffic. Once again I clearly saw both eyes light up and she clearly observed that they did not. At this point both of us are confused and somewhat annoyed that the other did not experience the same results. I had clearly seen the lights illuminate and she had clearly seen that no lights had illuminated.
I asked her to again look at the skull on the back of the truck. She confirmed that she had indeed been watching the skull in the back window of the truck. Then it occurred to me. I had asked her to watch the skull on the back of the truck, which she located and faithfully did. I did not specifically tell her that the skull I was looking at was located on the hitch. As it turned out there was a decal of a skull in the back window that obviously had no lights associated with the eye sockets, in addition there was a skull located on the hitch that had the eyes connected to the wiring of the truck. I saw only the skull on the hitch and she saw only the decal in the rear window. Both of us initially thought that we were looking at exactly the same thing. It was only later that we realized she was watching the skull decal in the back of the truck window and I was watching the skull located on the hitch at the back of the truck. What we both thought was obvious and irrefutable turned out to be quite different than expected.

|cub_driver||It's well after midnight and I'm home in Alaska. I'm living on a little lake at the end of the road. It's not vary populated so it's vary quiet out here. I'm reading jeepnut14 story about the graveyard and all the sudden I hear faint thumping sounds. First I thought is my new fridge making noise. That was not it. Then I realized it must be coming from outside my house, not inside as first thought. So I go to and open the sliding glass door trying to locate the source of the drum noise. I finally came to the conclusion it's the house across the lake. He must have bought a bongo drum or something. His timing was perfectly executed to the correct point in the story. How funny is that...(0:|

You have a true gift banging gears. Thank you for sharing! These type of things interest me so much, I hope to have at least one experience in my life similar those you share from your life. I'd love to hear that person or spirit's story, maybe they were involved in a mining accident years ago or maybe they were just a lost soul.
You may have mentioned this before, but at what age did you start to see things and realize your gift?

Just recently Before I went back into the summer rotation of my graduate school I finally got some time to go camping, the girl friend has been killing me to take a weekend and go jeeping and exploring but when you work full time, have an impacted, accelerated and highly competitive graduate program many times I just want to sleep or do nothing. It is sad when the things you love turn into things that seem to be “work”
Well we got the chance to go out to calico and just tool around to the hearts content. We crawled through all the well known spots and as the sun set we decided to back into a cavern and make sure there were no mine shafts to fall down and a good place to set out the cots and relax. We did notice an area that had been an opening once a long time ago and what was now a hunk of rust could barely make out 2 wheels and a square, most likely the remnants of an old mine cart. We walked diligently around the jeep and our little area. Its always fun to camp in places like this, but generally for safety you always want to make a “death circle”, basically… I can pee here… I know that’s safe. God forbid you wake up in the middle of the night needing to take a leak and you walk just outside of your perimeter and BAM your gone…
So out comes the ice chest, I had brought just a hand full of wood for a fire, the light is more what your after than the heat. I light up a small stack pulled out the hibachi and as is becoming customary for the girl and I, we had filet mignon and lobster tucked into a cavern with a perfect sky. It was a great setting…
Inside my jeep I always carry 4 things ALWAYS (other than of course the off road necessities) but I always have 3 chairs and a pop up table. I have just learned that when you go playing in the dirt most people forget a chair… so I have one for me, a passenger and then some poor soul who didn’t remember to bring there’s.
Maybe your gf is like mine, maybe not, but when you are in your perfect seat, with a paper plate full of steak, lobster, and asparagus, a Dixie with some Jack honey and the smell of a camp fire, there is really nothing else I need… However….for the gf… she needs salt, or a bottle of water, or “wheres my phone”. I have a hell of a time just watching her “relaxing”.
We have now been together for 5 years, and I “came out” to her about 2 years ago, I wont make a point of presenting evidence to her…but she is starting to pick up when I see things or I am not alone, I always run hot, my natural body temp is just hot, it can be a snow storm and I might double a t-shirt, rarely do I need a big jacket, however this evening I could feel it as the sun faded, I was cold and really cold. I threw on my jacket and had been wearing it, while she (the one who is always cold because of no reason…needed no jacket).
So back to her fussing around, getting water, getting a phone, getting salt, pepper and what not every time she leaves her camp chair it falls over. Now this is not cause her posterior is a double wide, she would get out the chair, get to where she wanted turn around and the chair would fall over. She went for butter……chair falls over. Went for the phone…it happened again.
Now, I am in peace, even though I am freezing, I am doing good. I finally look at her (she is now inspecting her MUST BE BROKEN CHAIR). I simply said, babe go get the other one. She hands me the plate, goes and gets the other one and pops it out… She goes to close “the broken one” and I slipped, “hes not gonna give that one back”.
“what do you mean he?”, and then it was like a light bulb went off, “How long have you been?”.
It wasn’t in all honesty until the light had gone out, the sun had set and I made our meal and turned off the lantern. The fire did a great job of reflecting off the cavern walls and it was bright enough as is. But what first tipped his hand was the way shadows fall. It is typical of a camp fire to watch the shadows grow and fall up with the fire, as the flames lick one direction or another you always watch as the light plays cat and mouse with the darkness. What had gotten me was how the darkness to my right the flame did not penetrate, the shadows of the flame would lick up to a point, but black was all there was.
It was then that I felt that cold creep in, but I minded my own. I have said it before but people like me I truly believe are like cell towers, things pick up on when they are “getting bars” and they move in to see, the first time she got up for salt I felt the presence shift to behind me, and then I felt it switch the chair.
Imagine marine layer and that’s the outline I got, I did not see a face, I did not see eyes, but I saw the presence of something there. Its smoke like arms would cross, its feet would cross, it would hunch closer to the fire like a man trying to warm himself, but it did not seem interested in stirring thoughts.
Then she sat down….i just kept on eating, the meal is great, my life is crazy, shes gonna flip a bitch…. Might as well eat while its still warm….
She gets up, the chair goes over and the presence stands there, she pops the chair up….the presence is just hovering…..she gets up…..chair goes over.
But it was on that last time, “he’s not gonna give it back” that I almost cracked up, as she turned to me and her one eyebrow raised… I watched as the presence turned and looked at me too. “he can see me?” It was comical and amazing to watch the mannerisms of two beings, a foot a way but a lifetime a part.
she popped out the chair, snactched back her meal and let out a chuckle and we sat and ate. When we broke out the drumsticks (we love drumsticks and they hold up surprisingly well on camping trips) she turned to me and asked, “whats he saying? does he want to talk?”
I noticed the presence shift again like it was acknowledging her words and wondering what I would say.
I responded that my impression was he was content and he knew he could talk if he wanted to, but above it all, I simply think he wanted company. I said it must be incredible to be invisible to so many, but its gotta be a good feeling to know I appreciate you. When I said this I could feel the presence with me more than before, like he was truly there, like an appreciative pat on the back “right back at me”
We popped out the cots and got ready for a night under the stars. I had packed up all the chairs but that one and I noticed in doing so the presence followed me…. The hibachi to the jeep…. The table to the jeep, it was like being ghosted by ….well that’s just cliché.
I pulled the chair closer to my cot but still around the fire. I asked my girl if she needed anything and she said Good night. “good night, Love you”.
See you later my friend was all I said to the chair and I closed my eyes.
When we woke the chair had shifted from facing the fire, to having faced me. Like someone had taken the first watch.

|Jeepnut14||Ok I have one it wasnt on a trail and I didnt have a Jeep I actually had a 78 Bronco at the time. The group of folks I worked with had found a small cemetary right by work which was on the outskirts of Greenville SC. Our group had been there several times just checking it out and taking pics and rubbings and such. All the graves were civil war era just prior to and after. I dont think there was one past the 1880's. It was kinda cool because it was right in the middle of the woods in a developed area so we all found it fascinating. There was a large cemetary just before it and the office was an old plantation looking house so we all guessed that it was originally an old family farm and the graves were the families grave site. The only creepy thing that we encountered during our first few visits was that it was so peacefull and relaxing to be there until at about the same time we would all get the most intense feeling of you have overstayed your welcome leave RIGHT NOW!. Which we did and joked about our imagination running away with us. Now im very fascinated with the paranormal but im an extreme skeptic so I believe there is a rational explination for dang near everything. So one day the girl comes in to work and says hey I was at the graves and I heard ghost drums. So naturally I was lime you didnt hear any ghost drums your letting things get out of hand if your floor creaks you think your house is haunted. She insisted what she had heard was real for almost two weeks. Well one day we finished our jobs early I think it was a Saturday (we were working P-3 Orions) and she suggested her and I go visit the graveyard so I could hear the so called ghost drums. After much haggling on her part I relented and jumped in her car and we rode out there. We pulled in to the grave yard and got out of the car and as usual started to walk around checking out the head stones and the above ground graves. It was the usual peacefull feeling and I was starting to get annoyed I was dragged out here for nothing when the happy feeling went away and the surrounding woods seemed a bit darker. Now in this patch of woods with tall pines all around these graves were in a small circlewith no large trees and were over grown slightly but it looked as though nobody had taken care of the place in years. I had about had my fill when I said to her that you havent hears ghost drums your crazy when........thump thump. Now this grave yard is near the intersection of two busy roads. We heard it several times....thump thump....thump thump....thump thump. All from the same direction and the same distance. So my detective mind right away went to hey look you are hearing cars on the roads hitting pot holes really? As soon as I said that to her out loud we heard thump thump from a different direction. I naturally said its from the side street and its the same location. She was starting to get very nervous. Then we heard the same drum beat but from a different direction and it was closer. I didnt worry untill I realized the direction it came from there was no roads. The drum beats kept going each time in a direction to the right of where we were and each time getting closer. I didnt get worried until I realized that the sound was circling us and getting closer each time while also becoming more rapid. We both stood there frozen all the while the beats were closing in on us from all directions. The last straw was the kast beats we heard......THUMP THUMP....it was right beside me. I spun around and saw nothing then turned to her and her eyes were as big as pizza dishes. We ran back to the car and pulled a Duke boys outta there and have never been back since. I dont know what it was but until Proton Packs are invented im not going back.|

|Southerner||Following behind my fiancee one night I saw a man laying in the middle of the median under a street light. It was nearly 11 and cold. It freaked me out due to a recent homicide in the area and the fact that he was laying in the median. I did a u turn and pulled up beside him. He was clean cut but shirtless and in a pair of khaki shorts. He was talking on his phone. I opened my door and asked if he was ok. After a while he looked at me and said "no, but keep going". So I left and called the cops. We were asked by dispatch to wait in a nearby parking lot to speak to the officers. Before they arrived we saw a figure run across the road into a wooded neighborhood. We spoke to the officers and went home. Never heard anything about it.|

When I was 19, a buddy and I went to Tin Can Beach to do some surfing. Laid out our blankets then noticed there were several scuba divers floating around looking for something - when all of a sudden one diver surfaces and starts waving his arms.
We thought... WTF did he find. A few minutes later the divers brought up a dead body and placed him on the shoreline. The deceased was in the fetal position.. They laid him on his back with his arms and legs sticking up.. the coroner shows and pulls out some instruments. He starts sticking long three inch pins in his body... then grabs the dead dudes arm and tries to make it straighten out... it pops back to its fetal state.
They covered the dead body, then the life guards put him on a stretcher. Proceeded to pick him up and then placed him 5 feet in front of our blankets. As we sat there they noticed we were in disgust so they moved this poor dead soul to another location.
Needless to say we didn't go into the water.

Yes it was true he was to post a story. A creepy weird on the trail ghost story.
But on his way home to post on his Univac 3000 a strange thing happened. His cell phone rang and when he answered it he heard a faint voice saying"I neeeed I neeeeed!" then the phone went dead. It went dead because he was playing games on it all day when he should have been working. He did not think anything of the strange call. His mind was on the chubby chick that he saw at the circle K by the hot dog machine. She smiled at him as she was putting a wiener in her mouth. It was love at first sight. An image burned into his pea sized brain. He pulled into his driveway thinking about fat chicks and wieners. He did not notice that he ran over the neighbors cat which squirted cat crap all over his jeep. Getting out of the jeep he got cat crap all over his pants from the running board that is useless. As he walked up to the front door of his house he heard a faint voice "I neeeeeed I neeeeed!" He looked around and did not see anyone so he continued to open the door. As the door opened it creaked and moaned like an old jewish man getting his gas bill. EEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOFFFFFFFFFFFO OOOOOOSCHMLAMEEEEEEEELLLLLLLWHATDAHELLLLLLLLLLLLLL LLLLLOOOOOOOFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!! He proceeded inside where he heard it again. "I neeeeeeeed I neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed!" He looked around and thought it was coming from upstairs. He headed for the stairway. As he hit the first step there it was again "I neeeeeeeeeeeeeeed I neeeeeeeeeeeeeed!" Each step he took up the stairs it got louder "I neeeeeeeeeeeed I neeeeeeeeeeed!" As he got to the top of the stairs he saw a light coming from beneath the bathroom door. Then he heard it again "I neeeeeeeeeed I neeeeeeeeeeed!" Each step he took toward the door the voice got louder and louder " I neeeeeeeeeeeeed I neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed! He got to the door and slowly opened it. There it was! His mother! But naked on the toilet! She looked at him and said "I need toilet paper! How many times have I told you to replace the roll if you use it up! By the way you smell like cat crap!"
