distortedtj you also have to add the weight of the trailor to that too... a 16ft car trailer just itself is about your limit.. very arn't very light

rthdtj There are several threads on this topic, 2000 lbs seem to be what most people are comfortable with.

Fookie Thanks I was almost positive that I could not pull much, I just wanted to toss it out there for your input. Unless I got a new bumber the hitch would stick out too low killing my clearance for trailing.

Dare2BSquare Dangerous towing that much weight with a short wheel-base wrangler. Did you ever hear of the "tail wagging the dog"? If you have brakes on the trailer, it might be better, but stopping and evasive actions with that much weight behind you is dicey!!!

Sailor2017 I haven't done it yet, but as I understand it, the 2,000 pounds is based on the vehicle, not just the hitch in the case of Jeeps. Even if you got a Class III, your towing capacity would still remain at 2,000 pounds. It is based on the length of the Jeep (very short wheelbase) and weight of the vehicle (Jeeps are heavy for their size, but they are still not that heavy).

If the flatbed has an electronic breaking system (or even surge gear breaks). Then you might be able to go higher, but if you only have a class I hitch, then you are also restricted by the strength of the hitch.

Hope that helps..

towing questions?

I have an 02 sport and the book says max pulling recommended using a class I hitch is 2,000lb is that what the truck can pull or can the truck pull anything heavier with a stronger hitch. I am looking to pull a 3500lb car on a platbed and I am not sure if it can be done safely. Please help me out here.
