X2...... I run a T-18 and it is very much a truck tranny... It's great for off-road but not that smooth on the street. It's a 4 speed but you would never ever need 1st in 2wd. T176 is good, affordable, and a direct bolt-up.

DownandDirty A t176 mated to a dana 300 would be fine for your setup. They're not as costly as the t18 and are a little easier to locate. The t176 is also alot smoother shifting trans and would be better suited for street driving. The t18 is probably overkill if your rig is not going to be aggresively wheeled.

jpdocdave t 18 is a good choice for cj's, 4 spd granny first. sm 420 or 465 are good chevy tranny's that will work.

yjwrangler hmmm if your price range for the tranny is around 3000 an nv4500 is great... its a 6 speed with granny first, go for a cheap tcase like the np231 it is great and the low is alright but the aftermarket support is awesome and you can pick up a good used one for around 2 or 300 bucks. look to advanced adapters for all the mating. i know some guys will talk about other trannys so i guess you''ll see once the thread pics up but i hope that helps!

tranny help

All -- looking for some help and education. My last Jeep was many years back and the transimision transfer case options were limited. I now own a 79 CJ7 258 / 3spd. This is not a daily driver jeep, it will spend 90+% of its time on dirt or crossig pavement to get to dirt. But I'm not looking to get into rock crawling or anything too extreme. So here is what I'm seeing: my final drive in first gear is WAY too high. I find I'm reaching for low range all the time. Now the transfer case is growling, but still together. So I'm starting to shop for tranny/transfer case. I'm thinking a 5spd with low first. Any models to target? Any to avoid?
