Transfer cases on YJ's typically have the pattern pictured below.
|11-05-2013 12:18 PM|
There are 2 sticks. The one one the left (short stick) is a 5 speed transfer case shifter. The one one the roght ( long stick) is the main tranny. The transfer gears are in an upside down 5 speed pattern.

|pegasis409||I'm a newbie with jeeps. Got an '87 yj that has a 5 speed transfer case. Never ran across that before. The 4WD light is on almost constantly. The only time it's off is when accelerating in 4th & 5th gear on the main tranny and 5th gear on the transfer case. Then when up to speed, the light comes on again. Am I missing something? Should the transfer case be in 5th? Neutral?|

|mikes70||Hi, I'm new to this forum not sure where to post questions. Anyway, I have a 4cyl YJ and a 6 cyl YJ. I swapped the motor's as the body of the 6cyl was done. I changed the wire harness under the hood but not under the dash. When I turn the key to the one position I get power but when trying to start it I get nothing. When I step on the break the starter cylinoid clicks. The 6cyl has abs and ac but do not want them in the 4cyl do I need to change the wire harness under the dash? Not sure why I'm having this problem. ANYONE????|

I like this Could you post something about intake/exhaust especially how the gaskets go on Mine came with a big metal with fiber back covers all ports coming out of head
Also there was a shorter blue gasket that cover only the intake ports Mine is a 4.2 with carburater

|Pistilchick||I have a 89 yj and was wondering if anyone can tell me what I can do about the passenger floor getting extremely hot . I have accidently put a bag of food there and it melted everything that was chocolate ect... Also if you are wearing sandals it can feel very hot on your skin . I've tried different settings on the heat controls but nothing seems to make a difference . Nothing worse than driving in the summer and feeling heat from your floor .|

|jakie d||Hey guys, i was looking for a thread just about asking general questions and this was the best i could find. I was wondering if any of you have installed a carpet kit in your wrangler yj. Mine is rhino lined and i just bought a molded acc carpet kit with the mass backing. My question is do i need the jute padding or any heat resistant padding to put under it?|

First, take a solid punch that fits in where the 3/8s drive would fit, smack is with some good hits, not too much, you just want to loosen what ever is holding it tight. Then get a 2 foot pipe and put it on the end of the breaker bar and slowly try to loosen it again. If it isn't coming out, try step one and two until it does. If it fails to come out, take off the cover and put some flame on it. You will have to repaint at that time.

This is great information, thank you.
The only thing I wish it listed was the type of transmission that someone (a couple of owners back) changed and put in my yj. I had it in the shop to replace the slave cylinder and decided to have everything replaced while they had it down, but come to find out, its a different trans in it, so i have to find out what it is. Yes im a newb jeep owner
