QADaemon My 2004 rear d44 has a slinger, so maybe it's a model year specific deal?

Dana 44 Pinion slinger

I am rebuilding my 00 TJ rear Dana 44. The bearing kit comes with a slinger for between the inner pinion bearing and the pinion head. My pinion does not have one. My question is does does it need the slinger and when does it need it (maybe in front axle only).
Thanks for any help.
Mike
