CHL Thanks everyone. I'm gonna pass on this CJ & continue looking at other Jeeps.

jameslee97206 I would send Dempsey a pm. He knows a lot about cj's. I was looking at a few cj7's before I bought my second TJ. He was very helpful and a very nice guy.

There are positives and negatives to short wheelbase. It's the same sort of argument of "automatic vs. manual transmission"; there is not right or wrong answer. Noticeable advantages of a short wheelbase vehicle are better breakover angle, which helps prevent high-centering, and greater ability to maneuver and turn in very tight quarters, like in the woods, or on certain trails. You'll hear arguments about which is best for rock-crawling; some prefer the longer wheelbase, some the shorter. Both have their advantages/disadvantages.

CHL Yup, I noticed it looked narrow & might be a lil unstable. And the front bumper looks bent. Makes me wonder how & what's bent.

Is a short wheel base, like this appears one to be, is it better at certain types of off roading?

Thanks for the replies.

Tarby 1972-1975 are intermediate jeeps. The 6 cyl. is a 232. It was more than likely mated to a T14 3 speed and all had Dana 20 transfers in those years. The V8 304 was offered for the first time in 1972. I had a 72, first year for the 304, and it had a T15 3 speed tranny from factory. It was designed for the abuse of the V8. All the 72-75s had rear D44, centered differentials.

Renaissance_Redneck .... and, if it were me looking for a CJ to buy, I'd be looking for a CJ6 (uncommon) or CJ7. I like the Daunless V6 (if I'm not mistaken, that '74 has an I6), and especially the 304 V8. Some of the CJ transmissions were reported to be junk. I don't know enough about the trannys to give advice, but I do think some CJ's came with T18's, which are awesome. I think that '74 has a Dana 44 in back, which is a good thing. Though the AMC Model 20 diff can be built to rival the D44. I'm no mechanic, so I'd be taking a CJ purchase to a trusted mechanic to have it checked out.

Renaissance_Redneck That Jeep looks good, but I'd guess the price seems high to me. Too high of a lift on a CJ for my taste; they are pretty "tippy" in stock trim as it is. Those flat fenders look cool; I need some of those on my CJ5! That front bumper looks "funny" to me; some kind of weird tilt to it. CJ's are an awful lot of fun, and easy to work on. I have two of them on my place, in addition to my JK.

Sorry, wrong forum. Mods can delete if needed.

Sorry Mods.

This 74 CJ is on my CL that I search. Here's the info & pics. $4500.00 obo. I don't know much about the older jeeps(not that 74 was that long ago to me)so, can this actually be worth that much?

"SIX CYLINDER, 3 SPEED 146,000 RUNS GOOD EVERYDAY DRIVER
POWER STEERING
33X12.50 15 INCH BF GOODRICH MUD TERRAINS
ALL FLUIDS HAVE BEEN CHANGED

WINSHIELD IS CRACKED ON PASSENGER SIDE."

Thanks for looking.
