|jeepjones||It's just the clutch engaging, thats normal. But like Jerry says, if it does it alot you may need the system recharged. It will do it when you have your A/C switched on as well as when you have the windshield defroster on. It goes on with the defroster so that during the winter months when you don't use the A/C it stays charged. If you play in the mud , those clutches get packed up with dirt and don't last very long. And when Jerry says "coolant" he doesn't mean the stuff that goes into your rad.|

Mine started doing it as well yesterday. My dad manages an AC/Radiator shop so once I talk to him I will post what he suggests.
I can't find where a rebuild is possible but I'm sure SOMEONE has done it...

Like your home HVAC system, your Jeep's a/c system has a thermostat which turns the a/c on and off to keep the interior temperate where you want it.
But if the compressor cycles on & off too rapidly, that could be a sign the system needs to be recharged with coolant.

|div4gold||Seems normal to me. I can't hear mine when going down the road but with the hood up it make a definite audible engagement.|

97 Wrangler AC Compressor Clutch Click
My 1997 Jeep Wrangler's AC Compressor/Clutch makes a clicking noise when it engages and disengages. Is this
a.) normal (not to worry about, just ignore)
b.) going bad (gonna have to repair or replace soon)
If it is going bad is it just the clutch or the whole compressor assembly?
How much does it cost to repair from a fair mechanic?
Here is a video I posted on youtube of it doing it IS THIS NORMAL? Jeep Wrangler 1997 AC Compressor Clutch Click Noise - YouTube
