JeepAddOns-Chris Digital calipers, press, setup bearings, torque wrench, odd size sockets, various specialized tools, etc... And absolute precision. If it's something you're going to do often and you don't have all the tools yet, then sure it's a good investment to do it yourself. If it's a one time thing, then it's cheaper and better long term to have someone else do it. Don't forget that the cost of the labor usually is breaking down the axles and all the headaches that usually come along with that, not just simply throwing in a new ring and pinion.

Does that include lockers? 300 for gears and install kits (high end) per axle, so there's 600, plus 250 install that's 850 installed both axles..

4Jeepn shop near me is 250 for labor... each end.

There are lots of You Tube Videos, like em or not, they help a little.
I suggest you read up on the subject on the net and take your time....
Dial indicators are Avail from Chi Com tools, better than none at all.
You can use regular grease for set up of tooth contact or Prussian Blue.
You will need to press on new bearings $$$$$ unless you can remove the old ones with out damage. Keep everything as CLEAN as possible, use proper jack stands, be safe !!
Again, Read up on it and take your time...Don't let a bunch of "friends" hanging around steer ya wrong !! Save the Brew til yer done !!

V00D0013 Where are you from?!? Lol! I priced it in pa and the cheapest is almost 2000 parts and labor.
I think I will give it a go. Everything I've heard and read just requires a micrometer. I have air tools and such.
It's not so much the money( a little!) it's more that I do pretty much all the mods and work now and would just like to know.

... Just a bit nervous because of how many mechanics don't attempt it...

darkproximity Gears are just time consuming and can require special tools, almost everyone here on wf thinks you have to pay ten grand and your first born to have them done, or only God himself can set them up.. If you have time, tools, and patients to do them yourself I say go for it.. Do research and have at it. Seems a lot of shops want to charge an arm and a leg for labor though.. Around here you can get them installed for 125 an axle, and for most that's a pretty reasonable trade.

pfig88 Gears are one thing that it might be best having someone else do: you can't really run by trial-and-error unless you're keen on buying multiple sets of gears

theres no way i would go by that.. the gears should be perfact from the get go, by using the contact pattern, you should never hear any whine or clunks from properly set up gears, if you do the damage is probably all ready done.. i would let someone who knows what there doing and has all the proper tools chang your gears or you might be buying gears twice...heres some info on setting up gears...

V00D0013 That's what I'm worried about! He said basically with calipers and a piece of pare you can center it and if it whines- to tight, if it clunks- to loose. Scratching my head over this...

changing them out is easy...setting them up properly is a whole different story...theres alot of expensive tools required to set them up.. if youhave access to all the tools then go for it.. I did my front one when i did my HP swap.. but then again ive been a mechanic the last 11 years.....

Dare me to change out my ring and pinions myself!

Been talking to a friend who swears it's easy to change out my gears. I have 37" tires and think im going to regear in a 5.13 or 5.38. Any advice? Yay or Nay?
