SS24G What are you using to take off the nut. I am ordering a new wrangler and I remember beating up the paint on the nut taking it off. Is there a better wrench out there for the job?

bikercec I had this same problem yesterday. I sprayed the hinges with kriol oil penetrant. Then we put a hard wood board on a floor jack with a fair amount of pressure pressed up on the lower hinge pin, the i pulled up on the door while opening it partially opening and closing the door. after about 10 minutes of this the pin finally started to move. Patience is a virtue. Cleaned and lubed and good to go.

porfiry SUCCESS!!! I let the PB blaster soak in again overnight. This morning my hubby and I were determined to get the doors off. We didn't use the jack, he basically just muscled them off. There definitely seems to be a sweet spot when the doors are about 2/3 of the way open. They were WAY gunky when they came off. Scrubbed them, lubed them, now they are a cinch to take off, yay!! Thanks everyone for the advice

I live in New Hampshire. We have waaaaay too much rust on vehicles. I have 2 97 TJs and my GF has an 08 JKU. We picked up her JKU a couple months ago. The doors had never been off. The only way I could get them was the old tried and true floor jack method everyone I know and I have been using for years. It works. Not sure why someone would say it is crazy. Why bust yer balls when the jack will do the work for you? Just make sure the jack is as close to the hinges as you can. Work slow, and be ready to catch the doors.

porfiry I am having the same problem! I have an '07 and the doors have never been off. I tried last summer but only got them about 1/4" up. My husband and I tried with a floor jack today... Nothing. I PB Blasted the crap out of it, then he got frustrated and used a punch and a hammer to try and lift it. All of our work only lifted the door about 1/5" out of the hinge. I'll try the floor jack & rocking the door method tomorrow. @SeanBateman7, did you have any success?!

LJDan Using a jack is just crazy. Just soak the hinges good with PB Blaster, roll down the window, open the door and walk back and forth while lifting up on the door. It comes out real slow but when it comes off, make sure you have a good grip on the thing so it doesn't go flying. Then sand the pins with some fine sandpaper and coat them with white lithium grease.

Volta009 Mine slid off millimeter by millimeter. Jack almost lfted tires off ground. They fought the whole way off. Took about an hour but now they slide on and off no problem. I scratched my paint trying a hammer that was a bad idea.

I'm also experiencing this problem. Any recommendations on how to fix this?

Pilgrim_Jeep When I did mine for the first time, I had to jack it so high the tires were off the ground, and when the doors did pop off, they landed four feet away from me. But they did come off.

i live just east of rock-chester....work in ER...i've had the same problem with my door and tried most things mentioned here with no luck...one important thing i've noticed is that if the pin is not turning as you open & close the door it's almost impossible to get off w/out mechanic like tools. i'm taking mine into a mechanic monday morning to see if he can get the one off. my other door...the pins turned and they easliy came off.

sevenservices I've found that swinging them open and closed, window down, while pulling up does the trick most the time. They have a sweet spot. Mine in particular have to be about 2/3 open or they will never come out. Once 2/3 open, they pop right up.

Also, Anti-Seeze lasts at least 100,000 times longer than oil or lithium grease. Its silver, once you guys use the stuff for parts like this you'll never go back. Anti-Seeze cannot be used like oil or greese, it does not mix with internal components like rear ends, engines, bearings, etc... but it is the cats ass for threads, sleeves, grommets, pulleys, etc...

Wesboy I've noticed when running tube doors, the bottom door hinge on the Jeep sometimes gets out of alignment making it nearly impossible to remove the doors.

Once the bottom hinge is loosened (with a T40 Torx tool) the doors slide out real easy.

You can tell if the bottom hinge has moved by the paint around the hinge.
If the hinge hasn't moved, don't mess with them.
But if you do loosen the bottom hinges, be really careful not to strip the Torx bolt heads - those suckers are on tight. I got a T-handle T40 just for this job.

NHEric You are welcome. I'll be honest - I haven't put my doors back on in 2 or 3 years. I just park it in the barn for the winter.

I use white lithium grease. I would imagine any will do.

NHEric You can do it. Just be patient. Don't force it. Let the jack do the work.

But alright, I have a friend with a floor jack, I'll probably be giving him a ring tonight after work. when I had the jack I didn't try swinging it last time because it was just my jeep jack and a block of wood that hated staying put. Hopefully swinging it will help when I borrow my friends jack

Shoe As long as the pin is moving freely inside the hinge, the only thing keeping it from lifting off is the small "lip" of rust and paint on the pin between the threads and hinge. I used a small flat file to clean the pins down to clean metal and the doors lifted off fairly easy.

Or get a BFH and beat the crap out of everything and see if that works!

Closer to the hinge. Honestly, I have done this several times. It works like a charm. Center the jack under the door. Put a block of wood on it. Put a little pressure on the door with the jack. Carefully, swing the door back and forth (not enough for it to come off the jack). Add a little pressure with the jack while you do this until you see the door start to lift out of the hinges. Do not add more pressure with the jack at this point. Just slowly swing the door back and forth. It will pop right off. MAKE SURE WINDOWS ARE ROLLED DOWN in case you drop it.

seanbateman7 The air hammer idea sounds pretty wonderful, but I remember using those in a collision repair class, and I remember it slicing sheet metal like butter XD

Now if I completely ruin the threads on the door, whats the next option, is there a way to replace them without welding new bolts to the existing ones? or is it once they are gone, your sol and must buy a new door?

The Korean Ooooooooor if you, a buddy, or shop has access to an air tool hammer and the flat, skinny pick/hammer/not sure what it's called air tool do the following

1. Take nuts off
2. Using the air tool hammer, hammer from the bottom of the bolt up (take your time!)
3. When you get to a point where the bolt is flush with the hinge use the skinny whatever you call it to continue pushing the pin upwards and out (when you get to this step make sure a buddy is hold onto the door)
4. Door will slide right off (at this point you can choose to take the pins all the way out or you can use a rubber mallet to hit them back in)

Simple as that assuming you have access to air tools. Just did this today. A buddy in our industrial shop at work came up with the solution. We tried the block of wood + floor jack, but it was tilting the whole Jeep and didn't want to risk bending the door or doing some sort of other damage to the door so we opted for this idea. With all work there is a risk and in our case it mushroomed threads (far less money for a new pin rather than a new door or what not) where the nuts attach (just 1 out of 3... forth pin I broke the threading part a couple of weeks ago trying to untighten them). To make it even, we cut the mushroomed thread pin so the top pins have the nuts on the bottom and the two lower pins have no threads or nuts. Hope that makes sense and good luck!

InfernoGirl First try swinging it while you lift.... If that doesn't work then put the jack nearer to the hinges and be ready when it breaks loose... those suckers are NOT light.
