I should say that noise is my main concern. I can handle a bit of a bumpy ride, that doesn't really bother me. Does the TJ hardtop let more noise in than the JK? I really don't drive the interstate that often, so I'm probably stressing this issue for nothing, but I always read about the incredible noise at high speeds. I didn't experience that bad of noise in the JK when I test drove it.
Anyway, driving two hours to test drive/hopefully purchase a 2003 TJ Sport tomorrow.

I have a 98TJ and an 08 JKU Sahara. Both have some modification to them, but the JKU certainly is a driver for daily use. the TJ is parked at the cabin during the summer and the JKU is used to get us to the cabin. But both are fun! Both Jeeps are used for trail after arriving there and we air down both Jeeps.
There is one area where we can only take the TJ when we visit an old gold mine, and it's a cliff road where we can turn the TJ around, but not the JKU because of the length. Both are great vehicles!
I might add that my wife drives the JKU daily when in town and has learned to wave @ other Jeeps. She'd rather drive the Jeep and she's got an 09 LS-460 in the garage also.

|The_Chief||Dude, the JK is a way smoother ride... I test drove a 2-dr. the other day and was shocked how good it was! I hadn't been in a Jeep since the 90's, and I thought I was in a completely different vehicle... Now consider the fact that the 4-dr. is a longer wheelbase--it's probably even better.|

|Justin4x4Jeep||you cant beat a TJ for checking blind spots in trafic, a quick check over the shoulder and you can see everyting. as suspension technology increases, a JK would probably have a more comfortable ride i would think|

|jrode||Yeah, I basically just wanted to get an idea of things from people that have driven both. Obviously I'll need to test drive, but it'll help me in terms of deciding whether or not I want to look at TJ's.|

Honestly. Ride is pretty much the same.
Visibility is a bit worse in my JK. Taking the head rest out helped.

Ride difference between JK & TJ
Hey all, I'm new here. I apologize if this has been discussed elsewhere, but I did a quick search and it didn't yield anything.
I'm looking into getting my first Jeep for my next vehicle (would be using it as a daily driver) and was just curious if some of you could give me a little insight. Obviously I'll be doing some test driving, but an opinion from avid, lifelong Jeep owners would be great as well.
I haven't been in a TJ since I was really little and really don't remember much about how it rode (noise, bumpiness, etc). I have ridden in numerous JK's and actually test drove one recently. I was actually surprised at how smooth (relatively speaking) it drove. From all the reviews I had read, I was expecting a lot worse. It was a 2007 X with a hardtop. I had it up to 70 and it wasn't overly noisy and it wasn't terribly bouncy on fairly rough roads.
My question is, is there a big difference in terms of that stuff between TJ's and JK's (comparing hardtops, not soft)? The reason I ask is because a JK with what I'm looking at getting in terms of miles is probably out of my 15k-ish price range, so I'll probably have to settle for a TJ. I'm not overly fussy about ride quality. I mean, it's nice to have a smooth, luxury car type of ride, but I don't have to have it.
Also, a side question, is the rear visibility any better in the TJ's? That's one thing that sort of troubled me about the JK on my test drive. Pretty hard to see out the back.
I hope to get a Wrangler as I've always wanted one (thanks MacGyver!), but I'm really between a Wrangler and Xterra. Both have advantages and disadvantages, so I'll just have to see what I can find in my price range.
