TJ in GA Hey I know this thread is pretty old, but wanted to post my project, which borrows from some of the ideas already here. This is for my son's TJ. He is a catcher on his high school baseball team and routinely carries around an equipment bag that holds probably $1,500 worth of gear. We needed a way to keep it hidden and secure when his Jeep is sitting in the school parking lot. I like the look of the diamond plate, but know nothing about working with metal. My solution was to build a box out of 3/4" plywood and then cover the top with diamond plate vinyl that I ordered off the Tuffy website. It's held in place by clevis pins inserted through the rear seat brackets. Still need to add the eye bolts for securing a cargo net....I like that idea as well.

Fofo Hey guys, I just wanted to say thanks for all the great info. I'm currently building mine and i hope to have it together. I'll try to remember to take pictures as I finish. So far I have about 15 bucks in wood and 10 in carpet. No hardware yet cause I'm not sure how im going to secure it.

denisbaldwin If you're not up to fabricating anything, you may want to check out the custom-made stuff that DD makes. I know these are made to compete with the Tuffy boxes and they look pretty thick/heavy duty:

Plowboy1970 Here it is on paper. The wood is 1/2" ply wood and 2X6 construction lumber. I painted it black to match the Jeep. I did not put a 2X6 across the back as you can see. If I did my cooler would not go in the back. I put blocks of wood back there so the screws would have something to bite into and not just the 1/2" ply wood. Any other questions just ask.

Plowboy1970 I will measure it up for you. I made mine short so the soft top can tuck behind it. I think you can see that. If someone really wanted to get in they can by lifting up the soft top. But the cooler that I put back there can not be taken out unless you open up the tailgate. Also I can put my soft uppers behind the seats and in front of the trunk. I built it to keep stuff from flying out of the back. I am thinking of cutting a hatch in front so you can get into the back from the front on top. Still thinking on that yet. One thing I can say, when I put the top down along the sides, the soft top frame will rattle against the sides of the trunk. I fixed that by putting a cloth between the frame and the trunk. Probably a nice piece of carpet would work, but I have not got that far yet....LOL Still fine tuning it yet. Here is the trunk after I took the Jeep down a mud road. Notice the mud on the trunk...

Any chance I could get the measurements and a list of supplies that you used on yours?

mrhog I used a 4" grinder with a cutting wheel to do the cutting. just flip it over and mesure it out mark it with a sharpie and go to town. Finish it off with a file and your done

mindhunter Dude that is exactly what I need. The diamond plate is a great idea, I just don't know where I would get a piece cut like that. Did you say that you bolted the sides down to the tub using the rear seatbelt brackets? Using shelving is also a great idea because the wood is already cut. Thanks alot for the info and the pictures. Huge help.

mrhog I started with some shelving and built a box in the tub.

Then I added the rest of the boards. Screwed them down with deck screws that were countersunk into the boards. Also I used the bolt holes that held the seat brackets to hold the whole thing down

Then I topped it off with some diamond plate al. To smooth off the edges I took some door edge molding around all the edges.

To finnish it I installed 4 eye bolts close to the sides to hold a cargo net.

Trunk Mod.. Suggestions?

Hey everyone-

I'm considering trying to put in a trunk mod on my 2002 TJ and wanted to see if anyone has done anything like this before. I have removed the backseat because I'm running one of the those bikini, duster, windjammer combos (all one piece), so the entire back is covered where the seat would be. I want to install basically an oversize insta-trunk. In other words, I want something that extends from just behind my front seats, all the way to the tailgate. So when the tailgate is shut and locked, I can store things in the trunk without someone being able to just open, or cut, the the duster cover and get inside. Does anyone have any suggestions? I thought about just cutting some plywood and covering it with carpet or bed lining or something, but just throwing this out there in case someone has a better idea. Thanks!
