to answer a question you had, some people do prefer a manual trans for wheeling, but a lot of hardcore wheelers and every buggy Ive ever seen have automatics, and there are a lot of threads on how to convert to auto, not many on going the other way, so its your Jeep and you have to be happy with it, getting an auto is perfectly acceptable, try to look for a Jeep that has a good service history, and take along a family member who knows Jeeps pretty well and dont be afraid to look at every inch and ask lots of questions, its a lot of money, make the seller earn it.
The only other advice I can give you is enjoy your Jeep and no matter what you do have fun with it, thats what they are for.

|LouieDelTorchio||Welcome to the forum first of all. Secondly, do all of what has been suggested. Look for obvious dents or dings on the undercarriage like the drive shafts, axles, skid plates, control arms. And if you arent going to be doing extreme offroading i would choose manual. Maybe its just a teen thing, but i enjoy it.|

|dusman||welcome, check from major rust, frame, floorboards, etc.... check the oil, if it is thick and dirty, not a good sign, check air filter if it is nasty a good sign it wasn't taken care of. I looked at one last year that had NO oil at all, or at least not enough to register on the dipsitck! Look in the engine bay just at a quick glance it shouldn't look like it is oil covered like an explosion. Check tires for uneven wear. Get a CARFAX report, if they don't have one recent then get the VIN and pay the $30 online, it is worth it.|

|InvertChaos||Also look for rust on the frame, especially where the control arms meet. Pull up the carpet and check the floor boards and such for rust as well. As far as auto vs manual, its really all personal preference and what you'd like.|

New Chick from VA!
Hello fellow Jeep gals and gents! Bear with me here, I'm horrifying at introductions. Well, the name's Candice. Pretty young...16. Ever since I can remember I've been in love with Jeeps especially Wranglers. My whole family owns Jeeps except me(stuck with a 2002 Honda Accord...) I'm currently saving up to buy a Wrangler TJ...slowly, but surely. In a few months or so I'll hopefully have enough to adopt one.
Any suggestions as to what to look at when I'm searching? Like rust wise? Sorry if you hear that question a lot. Also, what are your opinions on autos vs. manuals? I've never driven a manual before, but it seems...interesting to say the least.
