Carlton80 Oww I forgot I did get the black magic breaks on the front they are awesome. I also got full doors also awesome.

Carlton80 replaced entire fuel assimbaly and a couple of frayed wires now my timeing cover is spraying oil everywhere the jeep gods are angry with me.

Evian Been there brother. Boy was I in your shoes 7 years ago. I was seeing my mechanic more than my wife. I spent a fortune on numerous problems that my TJ had when I first got it. The PO was a used jeep dealership and they put a lot of after market parts in the engine and installed plastic armor and a fake snorkel on my TJ. The moment I paid the deposit and was given the keys to my TJ, that was the instant all the headaches started. As I was trying to drive out of their lot, the engine accelerated on it own. It almost killed me. It shot out like a bat out of hell. I almost hit three cars. After 3 months, I finally got all the bugs out of the engine. Just in parts I spent over $800. I couldn't believe all the stupid useless devices that control the timing on that jeep. My CJ7 is so much more easier to repair.

Carlton80 got a fuel leak today might be the pump or could be one of the hoses wont know till I get the tank down.

Carlton80 Got the new Control arms on they make a huge difference, I love these things worth every penny. Check Engine Light came on today timing is off in the engine, new wires, new plugs, and new cap, at this point I think the distributor is finally giving out on me. I was planning on putting the new black magic breaks on next but I guess I have a new project.

Carlton80 got 4 Currie JJ lower control arms today, that hurt the pocket book allot should have them on soon. Jeep is coming along.

Carlton80 Wow, there were several small things I have done to the Jeep that I forgot about like the mats, wipers, got the 4wheel cleaned out, and replaced everything except the alternator with the engine rebuild but, there's something about a beat to shit jeep it's like a three legged dog you can't help but love it. Look me up if your ever in Texas i'll buy you a beer, here's to busted TJs.

04tjgirl Oh, forgot the new brakes and new wheel bearings too. Also forgot to mention all the mud I STILL find when it is washed. Inside the frame especially!!! It didn't take me long to figure out the PO abused this poor jeep. More than likely he traded it in because he knew all the problems it had. Needless to say my jeep has not and will not ever see mud again! It had its fair share with the previous owner and then some. You guys that are serious off roaders might consider it a waste of a jeep without mud and dirt but so be it. The most it has and will ever see is some dusty trails or some shallow creeks every now and then and the beach. I can't afford the work if something else breaks, and am doing good to get the transmission fixed now.

I feel your pain!! I bought my 04TJ Sport almost a year and a half ago. I was new to jeeps and during the test drive it drove great. Everything seemed to work...I noticed some scrapes underneath the jeep and noticed the dealer had painted the underbody and fender wells with paint but it looked good....(maybe like a polished turd) but all the same I bought it. Then the trouble started....noticed the clutch was slipping after it was good and warmed up....took it to the jeep dealership, they said I needed a new clutch kit, new rear main seal, new u-joints, new wheel bearings. Mind you this jeep had I think 49k on it when I bought it. I have done a lot to it. Some cosmetic but here's the list:
-new rear main seal
-2 new thermostats, first one was a dud and left me on the side of the road
-new u-joints everywhere
-on my 2nd clutch kit, returned the first one after a bad throw out bearing
-new plugs and wires
-replaced rear axle seal, it was leaking....been 3 months now and is leaking again
this was after I spend god knows what on the best fluids to put back in it
-new water pump
-new crankshaft position sensor
-new BFG AT 31x10.50x15 tires with matching spare
-new Dick Cepek DC-2's
-repainted my flares, headlight bezels, 3rd brakelight/spare tire mount, wiper arms,
bumpers, mirrors, door handles, gas cap cover with Rustoleum bedliner spray
-new skyjacker hydro shocks and 2.25 inch spacer lift kit
-new wipers
-removed side steps
-flushed radiator
-tranny has been removed twice now, because it started jumping out of 5th gear
violently and has now started slipping out of 3rd, although not violently
-new rugged ridge floor mats

Anytime time now I am going to be paying someone to probably removed the tranny for the 3rd time to try and find out why it is slipping out of gear. I have been told to buy another transmission or rebuild this one. I guess it depends on what it looks like once it is taken apart. I have been told it's the synchros.
I have always loved a jeep, and still love mine. Making a monthly payment on something that it always seems like I am fixing makes it hard to love. I can't tell you how many times I have come very close to getting rid of it and going back to a Toyota. Which I am planning on doing next year anyway, because I need a reliable vehicle. My tacoma I have now is a 98 with 285,000+ miles and still going strong. I have decided to keep my jeep though as I'm sure I will take too much of a hit on it if I traded it with still owing 10k on it with a tranny problem like it has. I figure by the time I get done with it I will have a new jeep lol. Then I am still going to sell my tacoma and get a new double cab next summer. Then I will still have my jeep to play in. I have had a lot of people tell me the same thing.....get rid of that POS....but I know if I did I would miss it, even with all the times I have cussed it. Funny how that is. Matter of fact I don't know how I could ever do without a jeep now that I have had one. Crazy!!

Carlton80 I already drink allot, but if the repairs keep up I will be to broke to buy liquor. I think my liver will give out befor I'm done fixing the Jeep

dmblair Stick with it bro, you'll get 'er. If it's one thing in life I've learned when working on stuff, it's gonna really make you mad and what not, if that happens, take a break, grab a cold beer, smoke a ciggy, do whatever it takes to get your mind off it for awhile. Then get back at it. If I had a nickel for everytime I've said I'm done with this POS and whatnot.....well, I've still got a 94YJ and 04TJ that I love to death and run great! Sometimes getting to that point is the hard part. You'll get it running perfect again and look back and think, crap, that sucked, but I learned a lot and know what to look out for in the future. Consider it a learning experience and a good excuse to have a couple of beers! Good Luck, sounds like things are already looking up for you!

Carlton80 just put on some bilstein 5100s the ride is so much better. I think it might be becoming a Jeep again.

Carlton80 So far so good after the work on the starter harness it feels like I have 50 more HP and I can hear the magnaflow exaust now. Moving on to the rear main seal.

Carlton80 Soon I need to get some good shocks I have rancho 5000s right now which are horrible for everyday driving whats the best all around shocks. I need something that will give me a good ride and will have no problem driving over a VW bug.

Carlton80 Got the new Rampage frameless top to replace the crap hard top it had on it befor, went thou truckaddons.com got the windshield header, tailgate bar, and door surrounds with the top for 530.00 after shipping.

Carlton80 Yea all I got left to do to get it running great is fix a rear main seal which the mechanic who put the new engine in is doing for free. I also put in a new high end ignition coil. I really don't know what else can go wrong but if it can it will.

BeerMan Dude, I learned the hard way that you gotta fight through this kinda crap and stick with it. It sucks I know. I am an ABSOLUTE perfection NUT (just ask my fiancee ) about maintenance and every single little thing working perfectly on my vehicles. I couldn't tell you the number of times I have had similar experiences and dumped loads of time, effort, and money into a project and then finally just said screw it and sold it for next to nothing. Oddly enough I run into 2 people that bought project vehicles from me that I reached that point on and they still have the vehicles they bought from me and have never had a SINGLE DAMNED ISSUE!!!!!

Basically I kept fixing and working on both of them until they were perfect but then a couple things would go wrong and I'd be like "as soon as this one thing is fixed I'm dumping this POS!!!!" My old 91 Jeep YJ is flying around my town still, which actually both pleases me AND PISSES ME OFF!!! That thing was a nightmare for me, yet the guy who has it now is like "yeah man I've had this thing for 10 years now and only had to buy one battery for it..and..hell the tires you put on it even lasted 6 years"

Carlton80 Today rebuilt the starter harness, O2 harness, and replaced all 4 U joints. Hopefully that should fix the loss of power issues and the horrible shaking.

Carlton80 Im gona keep going the only big things left are the transmission and axles, and the axles are fine. The transmission is OK right now but we will see how it handles the new engine ill be happy if I get 2 more years out of it.

jp2611 It is easy to say this from the comfort of my couch.....but IMO based on my TJ unless yours has serious body or frame cancer...would keep going...it seems to me you are about half way to a totally rebuilt/ restored Jeep!!

Once you repair and fix the neglect you SHOULD have a very good JEEP.

Ok just checking....I feel sorry for you... That's a tough break!! I wish you the best of luck with everything you have done to it..... At least this way you know that you now have a reliable jeep that's should last a very long time.... Good luck and get some pics posted.....

Carlton80 It was burning a quart a week right befor the rebuild no smoke thou. Also the PO put a new radiator on it and got a head job so it has a history of over heating. When we pulled the head you could move the back piston with your hand the ring was almost compleately gone and the valve stem bushings were badly weather cracked. The main clue was the starting problem it had to burn off the oil that had leaked into the chamber befor it could start. At least thats what I was told.

00tj2 Just curious how did your friend know the valve stems and maybe the rings were leaking oil??? Did he do a compression test?? Was the jeep burning oil?? Blue smoke out the tailpipe??? Did you bore the engine out!! Or just re-hone it??? Also how many miles?? Just curious because these engines are pretty much bullet proof... I have about 132k and I burn about a qt of oils between oil changes3-4k and that's nowhere near excessive... Just very curious as to what led to the rebuild...

As for the doors I think someone on here might be selling used full doors if not check Craigslist or eBay, you usuall can find a good deal...
