Yeah, I really am liking the subarus. I did look at the forester and I really like it. Theres nothing else like them out there really. I think I want something a little lower to the ground though for handling corners fast. I'm leaning more towards a sporty hatch back... gti or wrx seems to be the ticket. The 2009 subaru 4 cyl boxer turbo engine is being ramped up to 265hp vs 224 from last year. and will sell for the same price. woo hoo.
Looking for a fun daily driver that I can have fun modding for autox and be able to toss a set of sticky tires and race gear for the track in the back and also be practical for a 3 passangers to sit comfortably and the dog can still sit in the back and the gas mileage is okay too.

Have you looked at the Saturn ION Redline?
If it's going to be a family vehicle, I'd look at the Subaru Forester 2.5XT's. Lots of performance mods available and the AWD is meant to be on a track.

I want a little car that I can take to the tracks on weekends and still get decent gas mileage as the daily driver. I'd really like to get started into autocrossing. I can see myself really getting into that. Never done it before though.

What ticked me off was how I had to bring it to the dealership for repairs and parts. There were no VW certified mechanics that I could find.

$55 oil change is not bad when you consider that they use synthetic and their reccomended oil change interval after break in is 10K

I drove an 03 VW Passat before I bought my Jeep.
It was a great car. Good gas mileage. Very comfortable. All the amenities. All around awesome car.
It was a year old when I bought it and PRAISE THE LORD it was a VW certified vehicle. I had a 2 year/24K extended warranty added onto the tail of the factory 4 year/48K warranty.
It was an awesome car until I had to take to the dealership for its "scheduled maintenance". $400.00 for a front brake job. $450.00 for a rear brake job. $55.00 oil changes. Not to mention all the items that broke and all the recalls I had to take it in for.
Don't get me wrong. I loved the car, but I am SO happy to be rid of it.

honestly, i'm a big fan of VW's and the sti an evo, but i love bmw, my last car was an audi, basically an expensive vw and it had 280,000 miles on it and still ran, needed a head gasket replaced so we sold it. They are reliable as long as you maintain them. My mom used to drive a jetta before the audi and when she got rid of it she cried because she had it for so long and it was such a good car, pretty much close to 300,000 also
Maintenance was the key to those cars, as long as they were takin care of they lasted, not sure on the newer ones but they sure look cool an i love the look of the gti

I had a sandrail with the 1600cc dual port motor, a thumper cam, twin Delorto(spelling) carbs, and a new ignition and that thing rocked!! It would pull the front tires off the ground if I could get the traction in the dirt. I'll see if I can find one of the old pics of that rail. I miss it!!

So, the WRX uses 93 oct? I've though of trying to pick up an 04 or 05 pre-owned. I used to do oil changes on an this guys 04 Jetta VR6 when we had Oil@Work in Dallas. That was a fast car. Smooth ride and cool blue dash lights.

|ygohome||the 09 WRX 5 door hatch was just announced. Edmunds says it will likely start at around $25k. and 265hp. I'm checking with the local subaru dealerships to see when they arrive.|

I've always like the Volkswagons. The new Rabbit with the VR6 engine is nice. Alot of my friends swear by VW, and they aren't just DDs. They are modded to the sun and back. Slammed suspensions, power chips, racing clutch etc. North Jersey actually has the "DUB CLUB", and I think their symbol is pretty cool.

I was checking out Foresters for a while. The MazdaSpeed3 is also a really nice car. I know some people that have some and they can really haul ass... but they are basically a Ford in a fancy kimono. The standard 3 model is nice too and I have had my eyes on one for some time now.

seems like I'm stuck between questionable reliability/but great gas mileage with the VW GTI MKV
terrific reliability and gas mileage with the Prius/but high service costs and $5k+ markup (hybrid I'm guessing aint cheap to repair and requires special skillz and tools to work on... in other words, I can't wrench on it myself or even take it to my local offroad mechanic) and its a rather booring car other than the geewiz hybrid stuff
terrific reliability and performance with the either the Subaru STI or Mitsu Evo/and great performance and looks/but so so MPG and a price thats about 10k higher than a GTI. (That $10k can buy me about alot of maintenance and clutch jobs on the gti)
Mazdaspeed3... decent MPG... better than average performance... good reliability according to consumer reports and JD power and associates. Good price too. But kindof station wagon looks.
...or... a pre owned Dodge 6.7 Cummins Turbo Diesel. it would kill my plans for an economical fuel sipper. It would be a nice 3rd vehicle though to haul a Rhino and the jeep around with though. But for now I'll still be driving my jeep to the trails and the dielsel will have to wait.
I'm still leaning towards the GTI for the initial cost, MPG, looks, performance. I may change my mind still. I've been checking into the VW reliability more and the 08 MKVs seem to have better reliability than the earlier MKIVs from previous years. And the 09s will be the TSI motor with timing chain instead of timing belt and stuff like that.
I've got a few months to decide so I'll change my mind back and forth before then.

|parrot head||I find it funny that some people put V-dubs down so hard. They are the number one selling manufacturer world wide. And they hold a good resale value even with well over 100k miles. Between my friends, family and myself we have owned a few over the years, they are good cars generally speaking. My wife just got an 08 Jetta last winter, and it is such a blast to drive, and has more features than a comparably priced Honda. Good safety rating too. I can remember my roomate in college had a 90 or 91 GTI, he rolled it on a back road, one full roll and back onto its wheels. The car was still running and he drove it home! It was totaled, but he wasn't hurt other than a few bumps and scrapes.|

the newer mazda cars i'm a little weary of also, i just had a regular customer have his a/c compressor go out around 45k, and decent parts were only available from the dealer and it cost over $1400 just for the compressor assembly, and when i was talking to the parts guy at the mazda dealership he was rippin into them. thats not a good sign.
just as i said, and was said later, when you see them in the shop for consistent expensive repairs its an indicator of what you're getting. if you think the car is cool, and don't mind throwing stupid amounts of money at it for repairs then vw is a fun car, but i think it is stupid.

66k? I have a buddy that worked for a British car repair shop as a tech. They did a lot with german cars to.. really anything not american. Anyway, they always had VWs in the shop getting work done. BMWs getting oil changes, Land Rovers on the suspension work lift, and VWs everywhere I also had a few friends with new VWs for first cars because parents think they are cute, and kids think a turbo 1.8 is fast, and they were always in the shop. Not because they beat them up (most did, some didn't), but for stupid stuff. Like 4 weeks old, and the LF window just falls down into the door. Window frame just gave out. Wierd stuff like that. Now, maybe those were just wierd incidences, but I would never own a VW.
As was said, Toyota's are good cars. My family is a GM family, and we still own 2 newer Toyota's. I also know a few people who swear by suburas and never really had any problems with them. One of my buddies had a highly modified WRX, the old body style, and had to have subura put a heat shield under the lower cylinder because it was notorious for overheating due to the exhaust being routed right under the block near the cylinder, but that was it. And, he beat the crap out of that car and raced it a lot. But still, even with Subaru recommending the heat shield, he never had any issues with it.

my mother had a VW before. but now she has a mercedes A200. the MPG is better and there is more room in the car. and you sit higher than in the VW.
about 1/4 of all people here drive VWs. i donīt like to drive a car that all my neighbours also have.
btw itīs the same with mercedes-benc C and E class over here.
some people use to say: if you want to drive a mercedes, call a taxi...

Yeah, the VW and Audi's can be very expensive repairs. My sisters Audi TT just had the clutch replaced and that was 1600 plus change... and that didn't include a new flywheel or resurfacing it. Also the VW reliability rating is 4 out of 10 from JD Power and Associates and Consumer Reports.
Bummer cause I really like the GTI and it gets great gas mileage. The Mitsu Evo I REALLY really like but it gets 22 mpg at best.
I don't mind paying more for reliability and performance, just would like to get good MPG out if at the same time. Also, I just found the Mazdaspeed3... more powerful than the gti (263hp vs 200hp) and gets good mpg (18-26) and has a reliability rating of 8 out of 10 vs the VWs 4 out of 10. Sells for a hair under what the GTI costs too... I don't think it looks as good though. Anything else you guys could recommend?

i'd stay away from vw. they look and drive nice, and their hip or whatever. but they get real expensive somewhere between 60-75k. many expensive problems. all that german technology will eventually need to be fixed. i work on a ton of vw/audi bmw and mercedes where i work, if you don't mind $1,000-$2,000 repair bills then go for it.
a vw golf just left my shop for $2,073 in a clutch, and ignition coil and tune up for a check engine light. had 66k on it around 2002 i believe.
personally i like subaru, i've never owned one, but the ones i've worked on i liked, serviceable, and most have been in good shape over 100k without the owner spending a ton of money. if i bought a car i think i'd buy a subaru.
i had a fleet account that had 4 toyota prius we serviced, they all went over 100k with nothing more than oil changes, brakes and tires. and these were the first generation i think, around 2000. i've seen no issues with them yet.

I had an access port for my Suby which is basically an "on the fly" computer reprogrammer.
One of the maps is an economy map which basically turns off the turbo and detunes it all. I got 400miles out of a 13gallon tank that way once.

thats true... they can operate at 91 oct but the computer I understand detunes. But the GTI gets 21-29 mpg so even at higher octane prices it will be sipping the fuel better than my jeep is.
The sti and evo would probably not be super great for their lower mpg (16 -23 I think) and the higher octane prices. THose choices are incase I decide to f it and get something more fun than practical... lol
