|crafty||The mileage would be off but hard to say by how much depending on how long ago he changed the gears and miles added since then. I really cannot give any input on emissions or inspection. No emissions testing were I am and the inspections was--- make sure the vin # on vehicle matched that on the title I love Florida!|

I think he did change the speedo gear. He said it was off for a little bit though, so the mileage might be off by a few thousand miles. I think it's actually closer to 15, cause the mileage will read low w/o the gear, right?
I'll probably try to see if I can get it down to 5k even, just cause the emissions part has got me worried in addition to the trans issue. I might have to get a new cat or something. I've seen quite a few yjs labeled gross polluters. I think the cat is usually the issue, right?

Not sure about the emissions thing. The rig has some nice upgrades but he should be a little flexible on that price because of that transmission. Unless others in your area hit above that price and that is the market. For rust I would check the middle of the windshield frame on the outside right below the glass, on the fenders right along the flare line, look on the inside at the seam near the front of the doors below the sill, under the carpet at the feet areas and take a good look at the frame all the way around.
The gearing upgrade is a nice touch though, you could go up to 33's and still keep your highway speed good. Ask if the speedo gear has been changed with that upgrade.
The AX-15 is a good transmission if you don't add water alot and the 4.0 is the more desired engine.

The only issue seems to be with the 3rd/4th gear grind. Oh and the CB antenna needs to be replaced ($20) cause it was stolen. The other thing is it's a Colorado jeep that has been registered in alabama... so I need to get it registered in CA. Could I have any problems with smog cause of the exhaust/headers? (they are 50 state legal). Cause it's a CO jeep, are there any places I should double check for rust? (It looked good the first time, though I wasn't super thorough).

Ya, I should have mentioned it's the 4.0L, which means it has the ax15, right?
I've test driven 3 of the 6cyl models so far, and two of them (one of which I'm looking to buy) both had the same 3rd gear grind issue. The other had a bad 4x4 (2 owners in 6 years, neither of which had ever used the 4x4... ). Now I like this jeep, the owner is pretty cool, and it seems well priced for the mileage and upgrades. I just don't want to get in over my head with a bad tranny. I could probably fix it myself, (with some directions). My other car is an 88 toyota mr2, the supercharged model. Now that car is a pita to work on. But it's a fun little car.

|crafty||I did a overhaul a few times over the years I upgraded to the NV3550 which has a better venting system for dealing with the amount of water & mud down here. I could either build huge to get everything out of the water, avoid mud and water (yeah right), or find a better design that was affordable at the right time.|

Depends on why that synchro is becoming an issue. Granted YJ's seem to have a history with the 3rd gear syncho once it reaches a high mileage. If it has been dunked in water on wheelin trips it could be just the beginning and need more guts replaced. It could hold up for a long time. The last time mine went I completely lost third after a long time of issues and ran it without for about another 6 months before I lost another gear. I upgraded this time instead of rebuild # 5 or 6.
Extra note---most are not this bad, mine sees alot of mud and water crossings. Don't want to scare anybody.

I have a 95 Wrangler and mine doesn't shift into 3rd gear the first time, but if you pull it back to neutral and then push it back into 3rd it'll go right in. My clutch seems to be wore down too. I'm a assistant auto tech for Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and taking Manual trans and transaxles classes during the next few weeks. I'm pulling my trans out possibly tomorrow and overhauling it. Anyways...to answer your questions.
Yeah, it's most likely the synchro, but i'd also pick up the blocker ring too because for the synchro to latch into gear the blocker ring has to be lined up with the teeth of the speed gear. If those teeth are wore down on that blocker ring it makes it even harder to shift into gear. Now it costing $300 sounds a little too much. I'm getting all my parts through Crown Automotive or NAPA. Check out http://www.crownautomotive.net/catal...ion/index.html . If you have a 2.5L 4 cyl then you prolly have a AX5 manual trans and if you have a 4.0L 6cyl you prolly have a AX15 manual trans.. Select that trans and you can get part name and numbers from that website.
Manual transmission are real easy to pull out compared to automatic transmissions. Doing it at my work with a rack and all the tools it should take about 45 mins to an hour to pull out. Maybe a little longer if your using a jack and jackstands.

Buying a jeep, help with tranny issue.
I'm looking at a 95 wrangler, and the only possibly major issue I see with the jeep is it grinds pretty badly when you shift it into third gear, and slightly into fourth, unless you baby it just right on the shift. The current owner says it's just the synchro, and should be about 300 bucks for the replacement part. I told him that I'm pretty handy with working on cars (I'm in the middle of rebuilding an engine), though I've never actually done anything with a transmission, though I have a general idea of the parts inside and how they work. He seems to think I'd be able to fix this myself. So is this guy on the level, or am I looking at a full tranny rebuild?
