stretch05 I looked up some wired remotes. There aren't many. They're pretty basic and pretty expensive. I still like the soddering idea, but I've never done anything like that before and I'd hate to be out the $$$ for another HU when I'd rather spend the money on other add-ons for my Jeep.

eboven Haha, most mid range to high end radio's have a wired remote input. You could then buy a steering wheel control interface, and some momentary contact switches and some resistors of different values. Wire up the contact switches so each one grounds through a different resistance, then wire them into the steering wheel control interface. This would take a bit of basic DC electrical knowledge, as well reading the manual of the steering wheel interface to determine how the switches need to be wired together. You may also be able to purchase a wired remote for boat radios... this would be a bit simpler to wire into the steering wheel control interface.

Jma20a invest in a headunit that has a remote, problem solved

stretch05 I found this link

Relocating headunit and extending faceplate somewhere else.

That guy did what you mentioned. Soldered each contact to a cat5 cable. Looks like a royal PITA. I don't know how to solder so I probably wont try, but my curiousity gets the better of me quite a bit.

They need to make something where you can mount the controls seperately. I suppose they call that a remote.

eboven I have actually tried doing what you want to do before... it wasn't really fun. You will have to solder wires directly onto those contacts on both the face and the radio. You can take the faceplate and the radio apart to access the contacts a bit easier, but it still won't be easy. There won't really be a part that you can buy that will mate with those contacts; they don't clip together, just touch when the face is closed.

The only other thing you may run into is that most flip down face radios are inoperable when the face isn't snapped into place. You can try clipping the face on with it still open or flipped down - if the radio turns on then, you will have to replicate the face being clicked into place. If the radio doesn't turn on until you have the contacts connected than just running wires between them will work fine.

Good luck!

faceplate relocation?

As many may know, the yj stereo is on the passenger side of the jeep. I want to relocate my faceplate and keep the deck where it is.

What do you call these contacts so I could fab something to wire my faceplate in my console?
