lynn There are literally a hundred different designs of swing-out spare carrier/bumper combinations available to build or buy. Most accomodate the use of the tailgate.

For example, this thread shows a body-mount design offered years ago on early CJ5's

Other more modern designs add a bumper, tied into or replacing the rear crossmember, then mounting the tire swing onto the bumper.

JeepNub I have the same issue as you i think. Cant do the rear carrier because of the tailgate? Sucks huh im thinking of building a rack to go on top of my roll cage, with the bikini top under it. Maybe attaching the rack with those rolls of metal where you screw it to tighten. dont know what its called haha

Spare tire

Looking for ideas for a location of a spare on a '74 CJ5. Any ideas out there.
