Had it happen to me about a year ago in my Dodge Ram on 35" tires going down I-75. Felt the wobble and slowed down. The exit was a few hundred yards away and I tried to nurse it to the exit, which was a mistake. Sheared all 5 lug nuts clean off and my wheel and tire went rolling into the woods. When the front end hit the ground going about 45, it snatched the steering wheel so hard that I thought i'd broke my wrist. Luckliy, I was in the far right lane and the front right tire came off, so the truck got snatched into the emergency lane. Brake disc left a serious gouge in the asphalt.
The guy at the tire shop told me that it was caused by repeated over-torquing of the lug nuts with an impact gun (I was guilty as charged). He said that most likely several others had failed and I hadn't noticed until I down to my last 2 and at that point, they go quick.

Had it happen to me many years ago. I left work at 6 am in my 69 Mustang and something just didn't feel right and so I thought I better stop to see what was wrong. As i stopped I could feel the car drop some. When I got out I could see the tire was still in the wheel well but the car landed on the rear tire and the strange part was the tire never fell over. That's when I could see it wasn't attached and just sitting there. Good thing I had those stupid wide tires everyone had back in the 80's. I combed the road and found 3 of the lug nuts. I jacked up the car and managed to get 2 lug nuts on since 3 of the studs broke off. Had an extra 9" rear end at home and just swapped axle shafts when I got home.
I can't wait to drive that car again!

|MadMike84||If you have aluminum rims after you tighten them the first time you have to rectify ten after a little while. I learned the hard way on my 4 runner...|

|IrateDonnie||I had someone loosen the lug nuts on my old Cherokee Chief, I think someone tried to steal my tires or was really angry with me. I went to make a left hand turn & it snapped the studs on the rear wheel, I turned & the wheel kept going straight. It wasn't funny at the time but it is now every time I think about all the people trying to dodge my 33" baha claw as it was bouncing down the busy road. Luckily I had a spare d44 because it smashed the brake drum & tore all of the brake components off except the wheel cylinder.|

|kshaws21||Happened to me once, luckily I was 1/4 mile from an autozone. About $30 or so for new studs and pb blaster and an hour or so later all was good.|

Yup, add one to the "it happened to me". Driving down the highway I felt a bad wobble, but thankfully I was able to get off the highway and tighten it enough to get me home. What ended up happening (my fault I suppose) was that my studs had already seen 200k miles and I didn't think that they needed to be replaced, and just with my tire wrench, I must have over-torqued and the studs barely broke free. A few miles later, the nuts started loosening...
Needless to say, every stud and nut was replaced that day.

|janosko9424||Happened to my brother he was going down the highway 65 MPH and the axle was stuck in the wheel almost no damage was done. He got really lucky. He thinks some kids tried to steal his tires but couldn't get the tire off the ground hahaha 35s are good for something|

|freeskier||Yes. Luckily I was in the neighborhood going slow and when I stopped the axle was sitting inside the wheel. No studs sheared off but all nuts were MIA. Had some spare nuts so I jacked 'er up, put the tire back on, and went on my merry way. I now torque all my nuts and periodically check them.|

|thayerchase||YEP!! JUST HAPPENED TODAY TO ME!! In my 2011 Wrangler Sport, Had my little 14yr old brother, taking him fishing an hour outside of tulsa by these Spillways that're all over this little town, turned (5-10mph) into a parking lot, all of a sudden the loud crunching/scraping of concrete having a trench violently dug into it!! (for a split second i thought i hit a ditch in the concrete or something that i didn't see and bottomed out in my 6" lifted on 35" wheeled jeep) until to my left, outta the window i saw my rear-driver side tire rolling thru the parking lot 10 feet, hit the grass for another 40-50 feet, then hit the tree line right on the edge of a 200 foot cliff edge right below one of the lil spillway dams (river side,not lake side)...i get out, run over thinking that it HADT'VE got stopped by a tree..NOPE, there it was, laying in the water 200 feet below me...it wasn't the $460 tow fee for having it taken back home that bothered me, it wasnt the fact that everything was torqued properly and loctited and they sheared off a lug bolt because you SHOULD NEVER BUY THE CHEAP $100 SET OF 4 EBAY SPACERS...noo, what pissed me off the most was, while waiting on the tow truck my little brother asks if we can still go fishing that day...NO!! NO WE CANT! SHUTUP, EAT YOUR CHEEZ-ITS I BROUGHT YOU AND SIT THERE WITH MY DOG!! lol...guess i get to figure out how to change out lug bolts...ya, i cant comment on spydertrax spacers or any name brand BUT BY ALL MEANS, DO NOT BUY THE CHEAP EBAY BRANDS!!!|

|Pistondog||Yup, full size Bronco. Had just put a lift kit on an my buddy towed it to his house to put in a tranny. Guess I forgot to tighten some lug nuts. Tire came off almost took out a car, they were 35's. His buddy driving the Bronco wouldn't get back in.|

|s3nt3nc3d||Don't have anything that crazy...but had it happen on a 6x4 John Deere Gator at work one day. The weight on those is distributed primarily to the 4 rear wheels so I was just cruising along and looked over and was like, "WTF?!" as I noticed my tire rolling past me...I drove it on 5 wheels for a few days while waiting for the new wheel to arrive (center hub section had broken out of the wheel so the bolt was still in the hub assembly but was no longer connected to the rest of the wheel).|

Not on any of the Jeeps I have owned, but, I had a '62 Chevy Bel Air 2 door back in the '80s when I lived in St Paul. I was driving back for my 5 year class reunion when suddenly the engine over revved and I started loosing speed. Pulled over on the should and the engine would rev up, the drive shaft would turn, but nothing to the rear tires. I figured I lost the rear diff gears. I got a tow truck and when he lifted the back end of the car up one wheel fell off.
All I could figure is I had a set of Keystone Classic rims with one locking lug. Someone must've tried to steal them, got to the locking lug and gave up leaving the rest loose. Ripped the lug bolts right off. lol

|mark2215||Happened to me in my old YJ. On the way home from a wheeling weekend. My brother was behind me driving his 79 ford pickup with slide-in camper 16' car trailer and cj-7. He was so close to hitting me it wasn't funny. The tire flew across the road, hit the guardrail, bounced about 20' into the air and landed right in a river. I don't remember when it was but I do remember the water was really damn cold and swimming in my underwear was not fun. Looking back the best part was a lady driving a car the opposite direction pulled over and said hey your tire just fell off and rolled over there. No shit lady, I didn't notice the 35" tire that just took off down the road or the fact that my jeep is now leaning way over to one side. Oh such good times!|

Happened to my son's YJ, I had replaced the brake calipers, rotors and pads. I tightened my side, he tightened the other. "his" side came apart doing 45 mph. Ruined the rotor, and broke two lug nut studs. We used the borrow other lugnuts method to get the wheel back on, then slowly drove home. The lugs were tight, he just didn't align them correctly into the wheel and they were offset just a tad. Cost me an extra rotor, but I DID find out how to change the studs!

|homerj||happened to me. totally my fault. i had to drill out a lug nut because it completely siezed and i broke another lug nut trying to remove it. and to top it all off i lightly tightened them because i was scared they would sieze again. i was driving down the highway when the jeep violently shook and i thought i just lost a tire as my jeep lurched to the left. As i was pulling over i said oh wait no i didnt as i watched it pass my on the highway. I watched it continue down the highway as it went for the center divide, it jumped about 10 feet in the year when it hit the barrier and fortunately it came down on my side and traveled another hundred yards before it fell down in the shoulder. i was in front of a car dealership and was able to borrow a floor jack and i was able to put it back on and drive home. Weird part about it while i was fixing it a cop thought it was a good time to pull me over (not really because i was already pulled over) and insisted on seeing my license and registration. Worst part was i was on my back from the liquor store and had a keg of miller lite riding shotgun.|

Yes I've had it happen. I had a '69 Chevy C10 pickup. I just put a new engine in it and was breaking it in on a dirt county road. Everything was great until I felt a vibration. The back dropped several inches and I noticed the rear passenger side tire rolling in front of me.
Good thing it wasn't my engine!

Yup. Took my brand new 2005 Ford Taurus to the dealer for a oil change & tire rotation before driving from lower Alabama to Tacoma, WA. Picked up the car, headed away, hit 45 mph and the front end started shacking real bad. So I got in the middle turn lane and as soon as I touched the brakes the front left tire fell off and wedged between the fender and the ground. I was super pissed. I ran a mile back to the dealer and flipped out on the manager in the show room. We went back to to talk to the mechanic and he swore he put the lugs back on. So I walked over to his station and they were under the arm of the lift. I lost it once again.
They had the car towed back to the shop, got me a rental and repaired everything.
I was just glad it wasn't my wife at the time driving, she would have cause a major accident if she was lol.
