Gaducker my whole rod is 24 3/4 inches long total. Maybe your rod is over all just to long.

24 3/4" is that the center to center or just the long side? I need to be at around 26 5/8" to be in the center of my steering box and have the wheels straight ahead and the absolute shortest I can achieve is about 27 1/4" also did you use calipers or guess at the 3/4"? mine is .6875 or 11/16" (thread) I located center on my box with the link removed total turns are almost exactly 4 1/4 lock to lock, then I turned it back 2 1/8 turns and put masking tape on top center then measured center to center of holes for link in pitman to hole in right steering knuckle and it's about 26.625" Center to center. I now have 2 good long sides as I bought a complete unit and the original long side was OK so if I can find a 11/16" left hand die I'm going to shorten the used one 1" and run the threads back by the same amount just for kicks. Just detailing where I've been to see if I'm missing some thing. I realize I can just pull the wheel and make it look correct but that would not achieve as stable handling down the road. as I would not be in the dead center of the worm gear and the sector gear as it was designed to be. Yea it's all tight- replaced ball joints last week and waited for steering link to come in. as the short end connected to the pitman was shot. I may be making too much of this. I started by disconnecting the link at the piman and centering the steering box which center by counting turns has the steering wheel lined right up nice, then I reconnected it and to get it back to that location I would need a shorter link. I'm going to start over and make sure I'm correct on this. I can't remember ever having to pull a steering wheel to achieve center before.

Gaducker I also assume you have already checked everything for excess wear because if nothings worn or bent and its all stock you should be able to find the center of adj very easy.

CJ-John Your considering the link between the pitman and the right steering knuckle the drag link correct? I'll give it a shot this evening.

Gaducker I just assumed you would have it already very close to center..... Ok then center your adj in your drag link, turn your wheel full left then full right and split the diffrence to find the middle of your box travel Then pull your wheel and center it up. After all that you are in the middle if your link adj and you have room to fine tune your steering wheel center.

Yeah thought I might have to. but that does not put me in the center of my steering box travel. I was taught that you wanted to stay very near center or is that only on manual boxes?

Gaducker Pull your sterring wheel and reposition it. But first readjust the link back to the middle of its travel so you will then have some room to move and get it perfect.

CJ-John Just a follow up ,I pulled the pitman arm and found it was keyed so it can only go on one way. So now I am sure I need to cut the threaded ends and cut or get a shorter sleeve unless someone has a better Idea.

Steering link length?

I replaced my steering link that goes from the pitman arm to the right side steering knuckle I have it bottomed out as short as it can go and still can not get the steering wheel (and box) centered. Has any one else had to shorten this link? I need about 1/2 turn of the steering wheel so I'm thinking of a 1/2" off both ends and a 1" off the sleeve will give me what i need. What do you think?
