TnDz TJ You have had a lot of responses and plenty of parts replaced. In regard to your clicking when turning left of right from center.....

Have another person get in the vehicle and without starting it, unlock the steering.

Have that person shimmy the steering wheel left and right from center to the point it would take two hands to get it to turn.. this should be done with one hand and kind of quick back and forth.

With that person above doing this, get under the front of the Jeep and look at your trackbar mounts ( frame side and axle side )

If you track bar bolt at the axle is moving.... NOT GOOD
If your track bar at the axle is moving and bolt is not... NOT GOOD

*** Track bar bolt at the axle is 12MM x1.25... PO on mine had a 3/8x16 in it and was not snug enough and would loosen up all the time.... this caused a slight 'stretch' to the mounting hole on the axle***

Your track bar mounting hole at the axle could be 'stretched' and a minimal amount of play will cause DW. Bad bushings can cause DW as well.

If you have side play in the track bar at the frame.... NOT GOOD

I know you had a lot of parts replaced, but something could be loose or overlooked quite easily..

While this same repetitive motion is being conducted at the steering wheel, check your steering linkages for side play..

check the tierod ends (TRE) from driver side knuckle
Check TRE from drive side to draglink
Check draglink at pass side knuckle
Check TRE at pitman arm
Check all adjustment points at draglink and main tie rod for play as well.

Any play in one or combination of any part will be amplified greatly that my cause your DW

Check your upper and lower balljoints.

jack up your Jeep in front on one side with enough room to get a 5ft bar under the tire.

While one person lifts up on the tire in a slight bouncing movement, look at upper and lower balljoints for play... ANY play in up and down or side to side is BAD. check both sides.

While the wheel is up in the air grab it at 6-12 o'clock and rock it hard... any play is BAD.. If you grab it at 3-9 o'clock, you can check it that way too, but harder to determine a balljoint and better to look at the steering components again, but I already gave you that method above....

If you have a binding caliper (brakes were mentioned above) or a bad/binding hub unit bearing, this could cause your DW as well....

I hope you get this figured out, as I know how frustrating it can be. Good Luck... and report back your findings....

littlethimble I had a two bent rims and a warped rotor that caused my DW at 55 mph. Have someone check those two items.

Sccrbrg Okay so i got it back, seems mostly okay except there is a noticeable click from the front end exactly when the steering wheel reaches a straight trajectory when being turned from right to left or vice versa.

My father has driven it and thinks i am paranoid due to the previous death wobble problems.

However the click is quite audible and on several occasions the steering has felt a bit shakey. However he has driven it several times with no complaints.

So my question is, is this clicking noise normal? I've never had another jeep, let alone one that's lifted with 33's. Not really looking forward to another freeway death wobble incident though.

Water Dog Be sure and have them check the complete alignment...especially toe in. If that's all good, get underneath it and feel and watch each end of each steering component as someone else moves the steering wheel back and forth. It could be a little play in many different parts of the suspension

I didn't get a good deal, but at my request the dealer replaced pretty much the entire front end: trackbar, rancho shocks, steering stabilizer, etc., etc.

They also replaced the rear main seal for a minor leak,

And they determined the source of my death wobble to be what they described as cheap chinese knock off tires - so they're now ordering me a set of brand new quality 33's.

I paid a little more, but IMO its well worth it to buy from a reputable dealer that will stand behind their sale than go private party. Most of the private party ones I've looked at had scores of problems, and probably even more that would have remained hidden until they reared their ugly head, and I would have been on the hook.

Now I can just go back to the dealership and complain

hambubba Yeah, if you got a good deal it's not that good. Even if they straighten it out I'd be worried about whatever else the PO broke. I test drove one jeep, made it off the lot and one block before I took it back, it drove that bad.

The freeway seems to be what produces the shimmy, but once the shimmy is back in the wheel it can happen at any speed. It happened to the car dealer rep driving to the shop down the street.

That makes sense, but I'm not sure mines a break problem.

This is what seems to happen:

When I got it the steering was tight, it drove fine for about a day. Then I hit a bump on the freeway and developed a side to side shimmy in the steering, then a couple of minutes later death wobble ensued because of the shimmy. Stopped completely and could still feel the shimmy (shimmy remained until the dealer "fixed" the problem). Then I had death wobble one more time before getting it back to the dealer.

Took it to the dealer and they replaced the trackbar, shocks, and steering stabilizer. Steering was tight again.

Got on the freeway to go home and on the turn merging two freeways the shimmy came back (as I was turning). Then a minute later death wobble again. And the side to side shimmy persisted all the way back to the dealer.

It's an 06 and everything looks brand new, just can't shake the wobble. And not looking forward to constantly wondering if I'm going to get thrown over two lanes even if they can fix it at this point. Seems like too persistent a problem.

robbiecc does it happen at a certain speed and always happen at that speed? mine would shake like crazy around 45 to like 52 then stop. only happened at that speed and always happened. tires out of balance. had it spin balanced and told the guy what was happening(hopeing he'd be more accurate) and no probs since. just make sure it's a spin bal and not the old bubble type

JIMLEE58 Next time it does it, check for excessive heat coming from one or both front wheels. I experienced it with my '98 TJ and found that the right front caliper was not releasing good, at times.Replaced the caliper and rubber hose to the caliper and have not had an issue since.

Heavy_Metal I have a 2006 Unlimited and it also had the Death Wobble. Like already stated above there are a lot of things that can cause this to happen. Bad tire(s), tire balance, front suspension parts etc... In my case, the death wobble happened most often when driving around 50 mph and tapping the brakes.

I had a warped passenger side brake rotor. I replaced both rotors and installed new brake pads and it fixed my problem.

Sccrbrg Update:

Took it back to the dealer and they replaced (supposedly) the trackbar, shocks, and steering stabilizer.

Went down today to pick it up, and they assured me everything checked out after their test drives, and wanted me to take it for a test drive before I left to make sure.

Test drove on city streets because the freeway was congested and was fine, thanked them and left. 5 minutes into the drive on the freeway, HUGE death wobble.

Needless to say its back at the dealer but they were somewhat confounded when I told them the problem persisted.

Not looking good.

Shadowkraze There is a death wobble thread on here, but there is a looong list it could be
-check balance on tires, are they round? (drive 4-10mph on a flat service and see if you can locate a tire out of round)
-was it aligned after the lift? make them check the alignment and verify factory caster specs and toe
-check if the track bar is tight, the ball joints, the tire rods
-don't let them fool you into JUST replacing the steering stabilizer and say its fixed.. replacing may stop.. but it's putting a band-aid on an amputation. The DW is still going to be there when that stabilizer wears out.
-track bar bushings, lower and upper control arm bushings and mounts.

AHHH New jeep and death wobble!

So I picked up my 06 TJ from the dealership yesterday and everything was going great until we were on the freeway for about half an hour today and the car started wobbling so bad I thought I was going to flip. Pulled over and couldn't find anything wrong or broken, and then the jeep started driving fine.

I thought I had started to detect a little more play in the wheel when driving this morning, almost like the lugs were loose but I checked and they're fine.

Definitely going back to the dealership slightly irked next week.

Any ideas what it could be? I can post suspension pictures tonight if it will help.

Looks like it has a 3 inch or so lift on 33's, dealership didn't supply that information when I bought it.

I'm sure they're going to tell me they can't find anything so I'd like to come armed with a list if at all possible.
