|Pmryall||I built a j-pole today, can't wait to try it out. And I'm going to make a Yaggi to try and make contact with the ISS the kids and I all think that would be interesting.|

|Pmryall||So the RadioShack by my house is going out of business, picked up an swr meter, a HT to ext antenna connector. 3ft of jumper coax. And some solder to wire coax connectors for about $25 or so. Also picked up a multimeter and some rechargeable batteries and home/car charger pretty cheap. Woo hoo! I was just going to look to see if they had an SWR meter and some coax adapters for a J-pole I want to make.|

Before you build your J-pole, Google 2M ground planes, they are even easier to build and perform just as well.

|Pmryall||Ha! My reason was this damn forum! It not only effects jeep purchases, now it carries over into fascinating new hobbies. There was a thread, someone asked someone else about why they just didn't get a tech license. That made me think about and look into what was involved in a tech license. And wouldn't ya know they offer them at the firestation a mile from my house. So 2 weeks later I ended up with a general license. Now I'm on here and someone ^^^ says look into this you can make your own J-pole. Ha guess what I'll be making soon. Just trying to figure out how to ground it if I mount it on my house can I just run flat braid all the way down the side of the house to ground?|

|Sccafire||My reason was for being able to check-in while out camping or wheeling without her. I set a time and a repearter that we both can talk on. More of a piece of mind for her that I am ok and and not needing help or anything. Up here near the Rubicon, the repeater for the trail is busy during peak usage for that same reason.|

Thanks for the starter tips. I was thinking of upgrading the antenna. Any tips on a hood magnet mount I figure if I'm in the sht my engine will be off, and I can stick a magnet center hood and maybe reach out. I'm brand new to this still waiting on my call sign for my general license. Any suggestions for a true emergency situation. But something not crazy expensive.
Compromising sucks, I know if I'm in a true emergency I'm going to want the best equipment money can buy. But hoping I never am, and may never be. I need to be practical.
I was looking at a really nice quad band from yaetsu (sp) but it's up there at like $375.
I like the handhelds because I can better justify the cost of being able to use it when I travel as well as in the home, and on/offroad.

|nectoxicdragon||you guys are seeing it in the wrong light, you drag the xyl (wife) along kicking and screaming, just like when you look at a new Jeep, that way every new piece of ham equipment is for "us" not "me". I'm an Extra, and every member of my immediate family is licensed, and it has lead to many good times and a lot of great friendships for all four of us.|
|01-12-2015 09:06 PM|
Shortly after getting my call, a good friend gave me his old Icom IS-800H which I installed in the Jeep. Because of that incredible gift, I've been able to keep costs way down. But... now I'm studying for my General, so...

Also using a Cobra CB for monitoring channel 9 and off-road use.

|Pmryall||Thanks. I think I'm gonna just start out with a little baufeng handheld. There are a lot of repeaters in my area. My wife was less than thrilled when she found out I'm starting what could be another expensive hobby. So I'm going to start small. See where that leads me.|

There are also heavier license plate brackets available designed for all band screwdriver antennas, that are available through ham radio suppliers such as AES.

|Sccafire||The Firestik 2m antenna won't work for 70cm. The Firestik is only a 2m antenna. You need to get a 2m/70cm antenna. Diamond and Larsen are a couple of manufacturers.|
|12-27-2014 12:36 PM|
KM4GUC. Just getting started. I noticed that Firestik has a 2m antenna that would act as a direct replacement for the CB antenna currently mounted to my spare tire carrier. Thinking about removing the CB entirely and just using a handheld on the trail, and replacing it with a mobile 2m/70cm rig.
Does that sound like it would be a reasonable option, or am I missing some difficulty involved in that? I just got the license a couple of days ago and have no experience yet...

Check out Teraflex CB antenna mount that mounts behind the taillight. Works great for me and others. Easy and clean. I have mine paired with an IC-2100H and a Hustler SF-2.

|realfinkployd||Finally mounting my IC2100 in my JKU. Anyone have any recommendations on a good antenna mount? I'm thinking something off the cowl on the drivers side or possibly that license plate mount I see advertised for CB antennas.|
