Hey guys hope i'm not digging up a thread too old but I have a relevant question. I recently (Feb 2014) picked up a 11' Sport S 2dr and I have this issue. I stopped by the dealer today for Oil Change and Tire Rotation and asked them to look at it. With my certified pre owned warr it will only cost me $100 to have the switch replaced (they had to order it) which they say should fix the issue. If it doesn't they're willing to replace the steering wheel, etc to get it "fixed" for that original $100. Does anyone know if there is a long term solution from Jeep for this yet or would I just be wasting the $100.
If it hasn't I'll skip them putting in this part and me spending the $100 and I'll live with this honking solution.

|dg1960||I too have a 2011 and had the same problem. The horn thing worked!! If I remember i'll mention it at the next service visit.|

|Aftahour||So weird. I tried this other method by smacking the steering wheel @ 2 o'clock position. Didn't work. Smacked the horn and everything started working. Need to make appt. to get software update.|

Steering Wheel Audio Controls
This happened to me also. It is what led me to this site! Most of the steering wheel buttons stopped working on my 2011 (Wrangler Rubicon with Nav). This included all the audio/radio/media buttons and the EVIC/Menu buttons. The cruise control buttons were still working. Your "fix" worked like a charm. I pushed the horn button and everything started working again. I called my local Jeep dealer and asked him if he had ever encountered this problem and he said he had not. I previously had a similar issue with a seat belt light staying on when the seat belt was already latched. I wonder if it is reladed to the same eratic electronics? These electronics are apparently NOT ready for prime time.

had my Mango Tango 4 dr Sahara since mid-July 2011. Love it so far. I just had the weird steering wheel issue today and glad I found this forum. The honk worked but when I bring it in for it's oil change I will mention it and see if they will upgrade the software so it doesn't happen again.
I have another question and I'm not sure where to post it., so here it is. On the speedometer it can display the direction and temp (as you scroll through the menu). However, the direction is completely wrong. If I'm heading South for example, it says North. Anyone else have this issue and how to fix it? Since a simple honk fixed the other issue I figured there may be a simple way to get the correct direction read out.

3000 kms on a new 2011 Wrangler. Left stearing buttons stopped working (channel change and front computer reset) and right buttons (volume) but the cruise control worked. Never been off-roaded, plain and easy city/highway driving.
Honked horn once and all the buttons worked again consistently.
Thanks. Saved a visit and probably wasted time at a dealer for likley and electrical check and 1 hour sit around.

Official Jeep dealer fix for steering wheel audio control issue
Today I brought my 2011 Wrangler Sport into the dealer I purchased her from for the 6000 mile service. Even though I have not had any problems since performing the "fix" as quoted above, I mentioned my earlier steering wheel audio control issue and they ended up doing the following (as per my invoice):
"Flashed CCN with TSB 08-038-11 for steering wheel control concern."
From what I understand, they basically uploaded some sort of software update to the computer inside my jeep. Evidently there is some sort of an official Jeep fix for this issue. I was not charged for this since it is still under warrenty.

|desertgoose||Who needs audio controls on the steering wheel anyways? The stereo is mounted about 6" away from the wheel, is it that hard to straighten your elbow?|

|Greep||This is crazy... mine stopped working on the way to work today... I figured the 105° days melted something. I'll try the horn after work... mine's a 2012 also...|

That is some funny stuff....
but seriously when the dealer tells you to do quick fixes like this and says it is a known problem... not taking it in or calling corporates customer service hot-line will take longer for Jeep to fix the issue...
Just like any corporate office they weigh cost into everything. I can guarantee you that there is some guy up in corporate saying... well we sold 500,000 jeeps this year, and we have had 220 failures, then he inputs all of his info into a graph and shows some low ass failure rate and decides that it is not a wide spread problem and they will never issue a recall

Steering Wheel Radio Controls
2011 Jeep Wrangler owner here.... 3 months old..... honking the horn worked Thanks to all for your help. I am concerned about the gremlins in my jeep. First the accelerator light (running erratic and stability light coming on and now this with the steering controls. I hope this is not a preview of things to come. Other than that I like driving my Jeep.

|mybusiness42||I had my 2011 for 3 weeks and had this same problem. As advised in this thread I struck the steering wheel (with the direction of the strike being towards the steering column) at the 2 o'clock postion. Worked like a champ. I did not read about honking the horn until after I struck the steering wheel, otherwise I would have tried that first. Either way, I'm good to go. Thank you Wrangler Forum and fellow Wrangler owners!|

|Maillady||Honking the horn worked for me too !!! Thanks for the info. and I hope they figure out how to fix it soon.|

|2011rubiconman||Same problem with my Rubicon. If you don't want to honk your horn you can also smack your steering wheel on the side. Hit it like it owes you money and your buttons will work again. Or Honk if you like the attention.|

Rofl!! Glad I found this, I'm gonna laugh every time I have to honk my horn now. Whether it is to fix the controls or for some other reason!!
