|1999 Wrangler SE||Well, it's been over a year that I started this post. I've taken my Jeep on several cross country trips and I Love driving it. Just a little slow getting on the interstate but other than that, no problem. Also getting around 20-21 MPG|

|cedar||Ive had mine for about a year with just over 155000 miles. It still runs good does not burn any oil. It goes over 65 on the interstate no problem. I would probably not like the 2.5 if I lived in a area with a lot of hills. I currently have 30" BFG on now but have a set of 31" BFG in the gargage waiting to be installed along with a 2" BB. I hope I dont loose to much power.|

|97TJnewbie||My 97 TJ has a 2.5l not sure the mileage because it was swapped. but even with 35's on it I got it to squak the tires. Even if it was on accident. Just need to learn how to drive your car. I had a stock turbod eclipse and would whoop people in their v8 mustangs, and camaros all day. Why because I knew how to drive my car.|

1999 TJ 4 Banger here. Original owner. I have had my share of love/hate relationships with the 2.5L over the years. While I never doubted the reliability of the 2.5L, my ego flared and waned over the additional power of the 4.0L.
But i am 42 now and have mellowed out some and have a newfound love for my Jeep now that it has become my daily driver (other car died).
I drive and hour one way to work taking the country back roads and am really enjoying the drive.
Looking forward to my KC HiLights I'm installing soon for more backroads visibility.

With that kind of logic, it really wouldn't matter whether you ran a 2.5 or a 4.0.

|1999 Wrangler SE||Just to give everyone an update, I had my Wrangler for a year and put 18,000 miles on it. Runs great. I'm very happy with my 2.5L engine and the rest of the vehicle.|

My 97 came with the 2.5, I bought it at 125K miles and it let go at 168K. During that period, we ran the stock 4.10 gears and 32" tires and was able to run trails at Moab, and go pretty much wherever we wanted. Since I was having problems with the AX5, I chose to convert to the 4.0 and NV3550 when the little guy wore out. I am happy with the upgrade. That said, if I were faced with the same situation again, I would buy another 2.5 TJ without reservation if the price was right, I would expect to get about 175K out of it, and if it was pre 1999, I would go to the 4.0 if the 2.5 croaked. However, I strongly suggest that if you're contemplating buying a TJ, do your homework and buy one as close to what you want as you can afford. Don't look at it as what you can change it into unless you're experienced in rebuilding Jeeps. It really is a frustrating pain in the ass especially if you've never done this before.
Running the 4.10 gears and 32" BFG KO's, the engine is right at 2300 rpm at 65 mph. My fuel mileage was right at 19 overall before the change, and now runs about 1 mpg less. The 4.0 has less than 700 miles on it so far, so that may improve. Again, I'm happy with the swap, but I'd really think hard before I'd do it again!

I've had my 97 TJ for about 5 years now, well over 100K and it runs fine. Just had to change a couple of sensors here and there. It won't go anywhere fast, but it WILL go anywhere. I'm no expert but I've accidentally wandered onto some nearly black diamond stuff and came out the other end relatively unscathed. I had mentioned to people in the past that maybe I should have got the 4.0, but the response was pretty much the same. "Why? You can only go so fast on the trails anyway." I'm very happy with it and plan on handing it down when I'm too old to go play. It will do 75 on the highway flats, peaks around 50-55 over the Cajon Pass here in So Cal but who cares. If I was in a hurry I woulda left earlier.

|Zevman||I've had both 2.5l and the 6, I did love the power of the six, yet I bought another 4. Two reasons, it was easy to find a stock 2.5 than a 6 and I wanted to build from scratch. The 4 limits my mods from getting to crazy and I know they are built solid. For speed I have a 2012 BMW F800R. I guess I have the best of both worlds. I would have bought a 6 if I found what I was looking for at the right price. I don't regret my 4 in any way. I even put 285k on a 94 range rover that I drove like a jeep to its full capabilities. You get out what you put in.|

|JustLearning||I have a 2.4l 6 speed and I love it. Yeah it lacks speed uphill, but who really cares? After you are over the hill you will be back up to speed with no problems. Furthermore, off road it is great, it practically has a granny gear cuz it's geared pretty low. I don't really know why you would need power off-road. Last person I know who tried to power his way through a rut left his drivetrain lying on the floor.|

|Yavor_Frank||AMC first introduced the inline 4 2.5L engine back in 1984. Back then, the engine was carbureted, but the engine matured fuel injection was introduced later. This engine was used on Wrangler TJ, Cherokee XJ, and Wrangler YJ. You can read more from 91-97 Jeep 150 / Jeep 2.5 Engine (Part #: JEEP-150LB-4), it always help me when I need information related to cars, their engines etc.|

|andrew127||My 2.5 has 367,000kms on and is still tight as a drum. Very solid engine, and infact the entire drivetrain is good as well. Many Jeepers Ive talked to have said that if your given the choice, a 2.5 is a much better way to go than the 4.0. you get almost the same HP rating in the real world, not near as many cooling issues, and being smaller I find a bit better fuel milage as well. Some of the minor trail riding I do with my Jeep in 4LO will pull me up, over and through everything all the 4.0 do with ease. Even right now with the Canadian deep freeze we just had last week of -28c in the mornings I never had any problems starting or driving mine.|

|jradjsb||All vehicles are different. I have a 96 Honda Accord w. 296k miles and have np prob, my brother has a 05 Honda accord w 140k miles and has all kinda problems. Same goes for Jeeps. Unless you buy brand new, you don't know how the vehicle was treated before you and you could be getting an engine that has been gutted, hence wont last as long. As far as scratching: A 2.5 w/ auto wont, but I bought my 2.5 5 spd used and the rt rear tire was wore out but the other three still had tread. I think it did more than scratch. 1st-4th are strong and get s16-18 mpg on higway on 30's. Can't complain about it.|

|The Green Machine||The Wrangler is not a racing vehicle though. I used to try to race around , and the ax-5 transmission is just not set up for it. Any Wrangler owner will find out soon enough that it is intended to be a durable vehicle, in it's own class.|

I can chirp my tires in my 2.5 all day long. And the 2.5s have 4.10 gearing(better than the 3.73).
