Roll Cage Design 101
i just saw the thread on your cage build. wish i would of saw it sooner.
I see alot of basic problems on the cage design. biggest being dead tubes. and the B pillar design. not saying its dangerous or anything. Love your rig!
im no expert but have been around a few cages. here the latest jungle gym we have been playing with.I did not build it a friend did, and he and i will be building my cage on the jeep as soon as i have the $$$$

the stretch was easy (joe at Absolute Offroad off road finished that in a few days work). fixing the frame, new axle housings, tub mounts, additional tube work and all of the other stuff was the hard part.

So di dwe ever get to see the finished product of this excellent fab shop, very curious as to how and what you do to stretch the drive 10".
That cage was a work of art, and you are spot on wearing the brain bucket. Not worth building a cage hust to bang your head on it.

|nvr-enough||so...stretch done yet?|

Youve got good skills, I didn't have any cad tools and wouldn't know how to use them if I did. I just sketched and talked with Hunter, the guy who did my work, and he took it from there.

kinda like this... the skinny red lines represent the 3/16 plate gussets
edit: wont upload sorry ill get it tomorrow
|11-04-2008 11:07 PM|
|bardenk1||i know my cage design shows no bends but i was wondering if i were to design gussets for every joint would my cage still be good as far as strength is concerned? i would like to try and design one that works with minimal bends because i don't have any access to a bender but a chop saw is 125 at my local tractor supply i was thinking about 1 3/4 dom gussets (out of 3/16 plate) if need be everywhere and adding a rear bar across the back similar to the front harness restraints and two either 3/4 or 1 inch dom tubes angled at like 105 degrees and 75 degrees for that extra little bit and asthetics on the frontgoing from the dash bar to the top of the a pillar|
|11-04-2008 09:26 PM|
lmao, you sound like me when I was in my design class last year bardenk. I designed a hawse fairlead, full long arms, belly up skid, gas tank skid, and some other stuff. I dont remeber it all but when I was bored Id just go to town on what was in my head.
The cage came out so sweet, figures you'd test it though. Cant wait to see how the stretch works!
|11-04-2008 08:00 PM|
|bardenk1||no specific measurements but i sketched this up on cad today at school cause i didnt feel like doing work|

Yeah, the stretch wouldve helped alot. I need to get the front tube work all cut off, its twisted pretty good. The radiater hoop did its job though, was able to finish the trail in the jeep no problem.
the frame is bent in the front about 6+ inches to the left. Going to have to get that straigtend. I'll just ditch the grill, front fenders, and maybe the hood too. Hunter will tube it similar to how Joe Daro's and Hackles jeeps are in the front, without fenders... THEN the stretch goes on. in another 3 months I'll get to try it again
The helmet works great. I bought two over at the local sporting store. $25 each I think. A good inexpensive investment. And if you do something stupid like roll or flop, people will still say you were smart enough to wear the brain bucket
|11-03-2008 10:22 PM|
|Scout||That's pretty cool. I bet that stretch would have helped...|
|11-03-2008 09:51 PM|
You just HAD to test it out didn't you.
Looks awesome Ben. Hows the helmet working?
|11-03-2008 02:18 PM|
|wavebacktothetj||ouch! well I suppose it was bound to happen|
|11-03-2008 01:56 PM|
|4point||Wow, you didn't waste any time on testing it out.|

That is one of the sickest cages I've seen.
HunterOffroad hands down FTW!
